Question: how do you fight when you can't hit back?

tl/dr How best do you trade against champions who can harass you for free without simply turtling under tower and giving them a free lane? (and i don't just mean ranged champions)

Hi, I usually play top lane, but have been having a lot of problems recently and was hoping i could get some insight.

Example, playing Trundle against Sion. Sion lands his E, and can fully charge Q before I can get out of the way. and then he pulls back behind his minions before i can hit him back.

I know the proper thing to do is trade back when he hits me and while his skills are down, but then he has his shield and minion advantage, in order to trade, i have to give up minions, because his combo doesn't draw minion agro and it's pushing my way now, then attempt to trade back, but then he has his shield and all his minions start hitting me, which means i'm likely going to take more damage than he will. And it's never good to take a losing trade.

Another example is fighting rumble, he hits you with flamespitter, and backs off, you try to retalliate, he slows you and shields while running away, you have to either overextend completely and give up a whole wave to try and hit him back, or just keep letting him hit you for free.

If you can't win, don't lose.

It's better for you to build tanky and collect the scraps your opponent gives you than fail to win the lane and be in an even worse spot. Especially when another lane is doing well.

The last thing your team needs is you feeding because you feel that you cannot win unless you carry every game. Just do what's best for your team and sometimes, it means simply putting yourself in a position to be carried (a.

Trundle vs. Sion? GET BORK ASAP.

See, the thing that makes Trundle scary is how he can make Sion untanky in teamfights, while outside of team fights hes an incredible duelist and splitpusher. Sion bullies you early game? k, farm up for your BoRK and Randuins. Later on, you just tank minions and start smacking him with BoRK.

All you need is item 3153 item 3035item 3143 item 3065 item 3075 item 3111 to be unstoppable by both Sion and his team while making Sion extremely squishy.

Additionally, your pillar is an area displacement effect that does exactly 1 damage. Instead of trying to run away from his Q, pillar him out of it and then go and trade with him afterwards. AA, bite, AA drop Icy Domain, decide whether or not to continue trading

Honestly when it comes down to it, there are some matchups where no matter what you do, you're going to get crushed. And then there are some that are even, or ad-you, but you misplay them and your lane opponent gets ahead. You simply need to adjust your playstyle. There is nothing more Bronze than going 0/3 early on and continuing the playstyle that got you there in the first place. Step back, re-assess, and then adjust according. Are they building Armor Pen? Buy Healthy. Are they building for late game? Build for early game. Is your jungler helping your team the best by neglecting you or is there a Nasus top and your jungler is failing at his duty to crush the Nasus?

Think about what you can do, rather than just do the same thing or assume there are no options. The only matchups where there are truly no good answers are the ones that are Darius/Irelia... Those are never pretty...

If Sion uses his whole combo for every trade he will go OOM pretty quickly, just play safe wait till he's low on mana then hit him, or if he uses his whole combo take him on they all have longish cooldowns, all the while he's losing valuable bonus HP+Gold,
