Spellthief's Edge sucks?

So since the changes to support items came up I just realized something that's slightly sad to me as a support main and that would be that the item 3303 support item in the early game is just absolute CRAP when it comes to gold generation for mage supports. Of course this is coming from a tank support player (mainly Blitz), but aside from that whenever I end up laning against someone with item 3303 and I have either item 3302 or item 3301 by the time both lanes are backing for the first time I've either had one of these two things happen. 1. Completed the questline for either of item compared to them OR 2. I'm ahead of them by 100-200 gold ahead of completing the questline compared to them. Now mind you these situations change per lane, but even in passive botlanes where everyone is simply just farming and doing casual harass the gold income between the supports is something I honestly don't like seeing since it might be a surprise to all you all but 200 gold early for a support most of the time means a control ward to keep our lane safe.

I would do the math, but there's many micro factors that go into gold income for items specifically

  1. The change of how much gold a minion is worth in regards to the item 3302 (assuming they take the gold efficient minions such as saving a charge for cannon and taking melee over caster minions)
  2. The Bandit passive with the amount of gold given between melee and ranged champions on all support items and how often they proc it effectively with a key focus on those item 3301 .
  3. Finally with item 3303 just relying on whether or not the support running it can make hit their abilities on either both or one of the laners and always hoping that they have a charge in store to effectively trade in lane for gold income.

I FEEL LIKE THIS IS COMING OFF AS STUPIDLY GENERIC BUT I DO HOPE THAT OTHER SUPPORT MAINS HAVE ALSO POSSIBLY SEEN OR FELT THIS HAPPENING SO I DON'T FEEL CRAZY WHENEVER THIS HAPPENS and oh also open to hear anyone else's opinion if this is a case of support items having unequal ability to be effective in lane.

It depends on the champ running it, and what team she/he is against.

If it's a Sona or Karma running Spellthief vs Brand or Blitzcrank or Leona , they probably don't get many opportunities to poke and farm with a item 3303 . If it's the Brand, it's likely he can effectively use it, because all he has to do is land a skill on a champ, and is pretty risk free.

However, a Morgana Lux MissFortune Velkoz will almost always effectively use it.

The biggest kicker is it's now extremely anti minion farming. If one of those supports kills a minion, the recharge is 12 seconds per minion. If Morgana clears a wave, that's 1 minute 12 seconds cooldown! In other words, no supports have to be mindful not to pick off minions while supporting until they can afford Tier 3, which doesn't have that restriction. But..... to balance this out Riot snuck in faster recharge times when recharges ARE up.

In other words, if at 4:00 a support recalls, buys Tier 2, and at 8:00 recalls and buys Tier 3, Spellthief is a really solid gold item that beats others as long as the support is always in combat; She'll recieve tons of procs/minute and also be able to farm minions.

But generally..... item 3305 is the better item..... since there's no reason to T3 it and it has no risk of engagements.

What it boils down to you is...... You're a Blitzcrank and supports are scared of you. They don't trade your adc on fear of getting pulled. In the meantime, you still have free range to go in and farm your item 3307 off.

If it was a non blitz game with 2 "unintimidating " bot matchups, you'd find you'd probably actually be losing on the gold.

I'm playing my main to climb and therefore only taking Spellthief since it works with the kit, but.. Yeah, I notice I'm a lot slower than the enemy at getting my quest complete unless we're extremely aggressive and forcing them out of lane frequently.

But in a farm lane, even with constant bullying for tribute cooldown, I still finish my quest at a slower rate. it's a little lopsided, especially when we were told we should finish the quests at about the same time.
