The top comment is Bad Mamba Jamba saying that Riot is NOT taking care of the veteran players with the 15% refunds on runes, saying it caters to the new players and punishes the older ones. It has 333 upvotes and counting. Riot Cactopus responds to it, and guess how it got voted? 218 downvotes. Well past the point where it is hidden at the start.

If I were Riot, I would have seen that as a red flag. Makes you wonder, does Riot care about the players, or are they just sniffing after their money?

Part of it is bad wording by Riot. People following the whole discussion from both sides can see that while others just knee-jerk upvote one comment while downvoting Cactopus' to basically get a fake double vote value.

I am in fact following this from both sides. I understand that new players should not have to face opponents who have slightly better stats (damage, health, etc) just because they played longer. That said, I'm on team veterans because runes were bought not with money, but time. Even then, if you halve the votes to make your argument, it is (pulls out calculator) 167 upvotes (rounded up from 166.5) and 109 downvotes. That is still a lot.

I bought most of my runes mid Season 4/Early Season 5. This was before the decrease back then so most were 410+ ip each. I think in total I've spent 130+K on runes/pages and I'm still missing ~40 champs.

28% refund does "feel bad" and I know I'd have enough to finish my champ collection if I got the ip back.

All in all I'd rather people post actual comments than spam downvotes since the ones who don't like it are always the most vocal about it. Actual comments help them see how to address/respond to it

To be fair, it isn't riot punishing older players as much as older players not realizing the system benefits them. Older players tend to have a lot more ip and blue essence floating around. Lower rune refunds means lower blue essence prices on cosmetic items means more purchasing power for the ip older players are floating. Imagine if riot instead did the following:

Regular runes refund for 1 <insert new currency> Quits refund for 3 <insert new currency> Runes purchased in past year refund for 400% extra to help new players unlock heroes 15 blue essence refund for 1 <insert new currency> 100 ip refund for 1 <insert new currency> All prices for items next year cost 1% <new currency> of current planned blue essence prices.

Functionally, everyone gets the exact same thing and yet older players would instead be happy they are getting so much value out of the ip and blue essence they have floating around.

The ones who are fired up are the medium aged players, the ones with runes but still have a long ways to go before owning everything. They do not (and will not) have much IP, and feel like the IP they spent on runes is being trashed.
