I don't get how Varus is the sniper of ADC's (besides caitlyn) yet has a shorter attack range than most of them on top of skills (besides q) having to get into that short attack range just to hit. can someone enlighten me on this or something cause he's rarely used and I'm not gonna bother playing him if there are better choices of champs who do his job better

550 isn't shorter range than most. It's the default AA range of all ranged champions.

E has 925 range and the AoE will allow it to strike targets even further away (as max-range goes to the center of an AoE skill rather than the far edge). 1k+ range isn't short.
Also - Nidalee was one of the best snipers in the game specifically because of her 1500 range Q. Varus's has 1625 range. Not sure why you're not counting it. That's probably your problem with this:

varus isn't a sniper...he's more like a cannon. his Q just punches holes in your entire team at once while his remaining abilities add to damage and crowd control. he's probably the second favorite marksman of many players other than Jinx
