How to make Kog's Q glorious
I don't think it's any secret that Kog's Q active feels dubious. It's a missile skillshot with moderate cooldown. Usually missile skillshots with moderate cooldown are pretty high impact, as opposed to missile skillshots with low-cooldown that get vomited all over the place like the Q certain explores who won't be named in this topic.
Now, mind, Kog's Q isn't weak. The resist shred it offers is actually quite potent. But the impact it has on a fight isn't immediately obvious. Things die faster, but it's hard to tell that you just knocked some poor chump down into 'True Damage' magic pen range for one of your buddies. Unless, of course, you were building for it back in the day. Before Kog's Q remake, he could shred 70 flat MR between his Q, Wit's, and Abyssal. When you did your thing and got some follow-up from a friendly Mage, the result was nothing short of devastating.
Seeing your buddy literally one-shot smug, unnamed explorers after you tag them a few times? There simply wasn't a feeling like it in the world. I was kinda sad to see that go. You can still pull it off (sort of) but the loss of reliability and explosive power is gone with all the remakes drifting around.
I want to pitch a way of bringing that play-style back and making it Kog's main thing. Because he desperately needs a thing aside from 'does lots of damage, I guess?' Kog isn't weak right now. He might not be able to compete with monsters like Twitch, but he isn't weak. He's hardly played at all, which isn't anything new. There isn't very much about him that's 'exciting'. His high points don't feel terribly high and his weaknesses are glaring. And most of all he really doesn't do anything unique.
But he could.
How could he?
Well...
Q - Caustic Spittle: (Returned to a targeted spell, ranged reduced to 650 from 1175, cooldown reduced dramatically, passive attack speed removed.) Kog'Maw fires a medium range corrosive projectile that deals magic damage, applies OnHit effects, and applies Corroded to the target for 4 seconds. Corroded shreds (flat amount) or (percentile value) of the target's current resistance, whichever is greater. Multiple applications stack and refresh the debuff timer.
This does several things for us. One, it encourages Kog to take risks. He should be a risky champion. Getting the most out of his damage means he wants to be close enough to apply his Q repeatedly to stack up the resist shred. It means that his damage is most effective if he can continue applying it unmolested, which further reinforces the 'protect the Kog' mindset. It improves his ability to amp his team's damage, which would be great for making utility picks more threatening or making bursty champs more decisive. Adding OnHit application to his Q brings back some of the fun of Machine Gun Kog, though in a much more controlled fashion due to being gated by mana cost, medium range, and cooldown. Because Q is still a spell, its resist shredding can't be abused through Hurricane, which I still believe is having a serious negative impact on Marksmen health.
As an added bonus, dropping passive attack speed (snore...) in favor of a more thematically fitting (and not to mention active) effect makes Kog a little more exciting in his play style beyond 'auto-attack from max range and push R occasionally for Sheen procs'. Speaking of Sheen procs, the new Q would fit very nicely with the spellweaver playstyle RIot has been promoting for Kog.
Basically, this would make Kog THE resist shred Marksmen. While Vayne is a selfish Tank Buster (more like everything buster these days...) Kog is much more team-focused, which is fitting considering that Riot wants Koggy to promote good teamwork. Kog's play style would be more active, more thematic, more fluid, quite a bit less standoffish, and generally more fun (at least in my opinion.) I still think Kog's Ult is in need of a complete rework after what Riot has done to it (shed a tear for AP Kog), but that's a subject for another topic.
So what do you think, Gameplay folks? How would you feel about Koggy being the team-focused damage amp Marksmen?
