Supports who refuse to buy sightstone why do you do it? What makes you think Damage > Vision?

I am seriously curious! I want to hear your reasoning.

I always buy sightstone, but in the back of my mind I "feel" like not doing it.

I'll be honest with you, as a support main, that being forced to buy sightstone isn't fun. The utility is amazing, the price is reasonable, and it's the core of every victory and your contribution, but it doesn't feel good.

The support role has to buy sightstone. No other role has that as a mandatory feature, not even the jungler (who, in theory, can benefit from it. I know pros do that on occasion, but I don't watch much LCS). Even though the sightstone has multiple upgrades, it is the constant among the support class. Even the ADC class (granted, before the marksman rework it was basically IE rush and maybe BORK for Vayne/Twitch) has more building diversity.

Part of the game is dynamic builds. Cookie cutter builds aren't always the best way to play the game, and some of the strategy is in counterbuilding your opponent. As the lowest income class, rushing my first 800 lane gold into sightstone doesn't "feel" fun.

Another factor that contributes to my feeling is a bit of spite, and how I feel that the game's state shouldn't be at a point where sightstone is needed. Vision should be 20/20/20/20/20, but a lot of the time I feel like it's 15/20/10/5/45.

ANother thing that makes me feel a bit spiteful is that people will report you for not buying sightstone, but it takes huge amounts of effort to get them to buy a pink ward, and for some people to even use their trinket. No joke, I've had people force me to buy sightstone on a bad day (normals, mind you) but put down three wards themselves in one game.

Now, this is only how I feel. How I feel and how I act are two different things, and I highly doubt that most support mains feel this way. I want my role to be defined by the champions, not a single iconic item to the point that several memes, campaigns, and wallpapers represent the support role with a ward.

Again, this is just my opinion.

I feel that the game's state shouldn't be at a point where sightstone is needed.

I could not agree more. It would be so nice if vision wasn't a needed thing, more like something that you can get for strategy, at the very least get it to where anyone can be the designated warder and you pick who that will be based on strategy rather that "Who needs damage the least". I just came up with an idea for ward boots that I think would solve a lot of issues (if not raise a few at the same time), but at the end of the day it wouldn't make vision LESS necessary, just make free vision available to everyone without sacrificing other items (aside from boots of course).

ANother thing that makes me feel a bit spiteful is that people will report you for not buying sightstone

This is one of my biggest issues with the ward/support issue. It pretty much enforces the idea of "if support doesn't take sightstone, report them". You don't have that issue with ADC, Top or Mid. You might have that issue with Jungle, but that can just be an honest mistake if they forget to take summoner 11. But if Support doesn't take item 2049 then it's free game to report them.

BastionKross2 votes

just make free vision available to everyone

We already have that in the game, it looks like this:

item 3340

Unfortunately, Riot nerfed the hell out of it because everyone was taking it over red and blue trinkets. Back then, it was basically a sightstone without the HP and free to purchase right at the start of the game. And for some reason, Riot thought that it was a bad thing when supports could just pick up their trinket and forgo a sightstone.

Here's my solution. Remove sightstone from the game, buff the yellow trinket to cover for it's loss.

Yes, the yellow trinket might crowd out the other alternatives, but that's a much better (and more easily fixable) problem to have than supports feeling forced to buy an item they don't feel good buying.

VoidStaresBack4 votes

This is a very well-thought out answer, and it's nice to see the opposite side of things from a fellow support main. I view this issue slightly differently, though, and in this case I think it's mostly just a difference in playstyle more than anything.

I absolutely think that the support isn't just there to ward shit you're too lazy for. As a Soraka main, I'm far too unsafe and squishy to be placing wards anywhere the enemy might be at the moment, because if I get caught out on my own it's an easy kill for the enemy unless they fuck up. I expect my team to ward as much as they can and often ping bushes when my trinket is down/sightstone is empty to ask one of my allies to ward it. That being said, in the end, I play support not to do damage and carry the game myself, but to help my allies carry the game. I'm already building a lot of utility items to assist my team, so why not build one that helps them in less tangible, but equally important ways. On top of which, Ruby Sightstone synergizes well with my typical support builds, so why not buy it?

Do I think people rely too much on their support for vision at the moment and are too uptight about supports not buying sightstone? Absolutely. The trinkets were introduced to give you a nice way to ward your lane and place wards throughout the game, and you should take advantage of this nice resource you're given as much as possible. But at the same time, when push comes to shove I'm the one who can most afford to be caught out, most afford to miss a skirmish, and most afford to be gone for a little while, so I'm going to carry more of the warding duties on myself because of it.

You know, this reminds me of something: I really hope Rito eventually takes Bard's concept and try to improve that fantasy, and make a support champion designed to scout and interact with vision (which some ADC's do, like Quinn and Kalista) while sacrificing damage, cc, and/or other utility to do so.

The support role has to buy sightstone. No other role has that as a mandatory feature, not even the jungler [...] Even the ADC class [...] has more building diversity.

You can't compare a 800 gold item to a full complete item. As a Support, you basically always spend your first 1300g for Gold item tier 2 + Sightstone, but an ADC basically always spend it on a BF Sword, and a Jungler on Jungler's item tier 2 + enchant.

I won't lie, build diversity for Supports is bad, but it's more an issue of having less total gold and being almost forced to buy Gold item + Stone + Aegis than just the Stone in itself and the fact you're responsible for Vision. It's not just being forced to build an 800g item, it's being forced to spend 50 or 60% of your reduced income and half your item slots on various items for the team before even considering luxury items for yourself.

Vision should be 20/20/20/20/20, but a lot of the time I feel like it's 15/20/10/5/45.

Well, that's kinda ridiculous. Damage isn't 20/20/20/20/20 either, and Tanking isn't an equal share either. The problem is, dealing damage is fun (or at least, seen as more fun by a large part of the community) so the people responsible for more than 20% of the damage don't complain, and hoard all the glory, but no single task in this game is equally shared by all players. Specialization is more efficient, and also enables Champion designs to be more original and diverse.

IcyPepper1 votes

Specialization is more efficient, and also enables Champion designs to be more original and diverse.

Very true, but we're talking about an item and not champion kits. Soraka, with equal AP, will never deal as much damage as Karthus, but Karthus will never heal as much as Soraka. That's a given, that's champion design diversity.

Vision, on the other hand, has the capability of being close to 20/20/20/20/20, but Riot's not really pushing it beyond the trinkets.

DeathBurst1 votes

You're missing my point, it's not a question of kits being better suited for one thing or the other, it's a question of roles in a team being clearly separated: you wouldn't want a team full of Assassins without any DPS champ. The carry has to deal damage, the Tank has to tank, etc. And nobody is asking the carry to tank sh*t, because if he played and built in order to tank, the slight increase in tankyness wouldn't be worth the decrease in damage.

Vision is just the same as damage and durability: it's better if one person heavily invest into it and if the other players don't have to divert resources from their main task. Of course, Riot could push for Vision being a shared task, just as they could push for durability being more homogeneous among different champs, but why Vision should be treated as a different thing than all other tasks?

IcyPepper1 votes

but why Vision should be treated as a different thing than all other tasks?

Because supports should be defined by their utility: the heals, shields, the crowd control. The the other classes can do some of that, but the supports are defined by their utility.

If sightstone was deleted, hypothetically, vision would be a shared task and supports would still have their dedicated spot on the team. Every class has its defensive, offensive, and sometimes hybrid/dueling items, and I really, personally feel that there should be vision items for every class akin to the trinket. Sightstone is a godsend, but I really feel that vision should be looked into a bit more. Someone suggested they could be the new boot enchantments, and blah blah blah.

DeathBurst2 votes

I understand your point of view, but I disagree, and my reasons are two-fold.

The first one is more or less objective: you're confusing Support as a position, and "supportive" Champions. Sightstone is expected from the Support position, not from the supportive classes of champions. A Nautilus support is expected to build a Sightstone, a Nautilus top isn't. Same for Annie mid versus sup. The other way around, a Lulu/Morgana going mid isn't a "Support", and isn't expected to build a Sightstone. So Support as a position isn't at all defined by heal/shield/CC. The definition of Support (as a position) is, literally, it's not a joke, "the guy without gold".

The second one is much more subjective: I really think that Vision should be a specialized task that is assigned (mostly) to a single player. Of course you can disagree with that, and then there is no point going further, but if you agree that it makes sense to give this responsibility to a single person, then it's logical to give it to "the guy without gold". He's not expected to build a lot of selfish items and to fill his inventory anyway (he doesn't have the income to afford it), so he can put a little gold in a very non-slot efficient item that will help the team more than him directly.

IcyPepper1 votes

So Support as a position isn't at all defined by heal/shield/CC. The definition of Support (as a position) is, literally, it's not a joke, "the guy without gold".

This is my problem right here. You know what's the worst part?

You're absolutely right.

I know full damn well that's what my main job is. ANd it sucks. As a support main, I want to be defined by heals/shields/CC, but it's damn vision. And I wish Rito would work on that.

This is why I hate sightstone, yet build it every game. I play my support champions decently, and make plays and saves, but at the end of the day people are still going to enter every game and see me as a ward bot. And that fucking sucks.

DeathBurst1 votes

Well, there are many layers on this issue, but one thing is: there are only 4 sources of incomes (3 lanes + jungle) and 5 players in a team, so you have to have a player without income. That's the only "hard" constraint. Now, what the job of this guy without income should be, that's open to debate. Currently (and as far as I know, always in LoL), the meta says "vision and team utility", but it could evolve, like with roaming supports like Bard.

But if you want to be defined by your heals/shields/CC, you don't have to play Support, you can go mid or top with Oriana, Morgana, Lulu, etc. (I shouldn't say that given the current lack of supports, but meh...).

I personally believe that those that do go "support" don't feel useful building like a support. Not going sightstone allows them to build damage (somewhat) faster. This is a problem that truly stems from a lot of people not realizing how important vision and utility is. I can totally get behind people playing mages as support; Brand , Lux and Galio support can truly work. Supports though are meant to help the carries, in any way they can. I have a friend that plays mages support and uses the slow from item 3116 to increase damage and utility (only when ahead) then will build things like item 3060. These have ability power and great utility allowing for mages to deal decent damage and peel.

People just need to realize the job of the support isn't to carry with damage. They can potentially carry with utility. Bard Braum TahmKench Truly some play makers.

i PLAY Lux support, lvl 6 mastery

you want to know my item build? start item 3303 item 2010 x3 item 3340

first back item 3098 item 2043 (and item 1001 /item 1028 depending on how much if any extra gold i have)

2nd back item 2049 item 3341 (+ w/e i can get towards next item)

thenitem 3092 into item 3504

at THAT point i choose to go item 3157 / item 3089 for final ap items

Basically:

If their jungle is in the game, I'll buy one. If their support buys one, I'll buy one. If their support skips it and jungle doesn't connect, I'll typically delay it, but if we're dominant that game I may skip it entirely.

Oops, I forgot the reasoning. So in the scenario that I end up delaying or skipping sightstone is because the enemy support isn't placing enough wards to warrant a sweeper, and he likely won't have a sweeper to clear mine out. Since we're dominant in the game our minions give us a good track of where the enemy is going (if support roams mid, we'll more than likely see him leave from his inner turret in bot.)

the extra 800g isn't that important, so I usually pick it up anyways. When my team is already 17-4 and I feel they may just surrender, I just...don't care.

i have made many comments on other threads regarding this.... i am a support main i get my gold income item and my sighststone every game....

im not against "mage " supports but when i do adc i prefer not to have one. to be honest. however as a mage support there is no reason why you cant get a sight stone or upgrade your gold income item to item 2302 item 2301 where you combine your ss and gold income item. which after boots your have 4 items slots for any damage item you want.

example Lux support item 2301 item 3020 item 3174 item 3089 item 3157 item 3060 i know you exceeded 40% cdr but it provides a balance of stats with damage with having wards, gold per 10 , mana regen, magic pen, armor , mr and the ability to heal your allies with your shield do to item 3174 passive and provide aoe aura for team with item 3060 and you can help push with the item 3060 active. this will give about 425 AP with out runes or masteries which a lot of damage from a "support" i doubt her damage out would suffer at all.

for a Brand item 2301 item 3020 item 3151 item 3116 item 3060 item 3050 gives him his "core items of item 3116 item 3151 with wards, magic pen, hp, mr , armor , cdr , mana, passive to boost his burst and adcs with item 3050 and the aura of item 3060 to help with team fights vs ap damage. so he would get about 315 ap 1100 hp 30% cdr 20mr 30 armor 250 mana 30 flat magic pen

but the issue is people dont wanna build supportish and have a well rounded amount of stats at "support mage" and rather try to "hard carry" buy building full damage.

God, could people seriously stop complaining about this already. If you want to keep complaining, then at least wait till AFTER Vision gets reworked during preseason. For all we know, Riot could be getting rid of item 3401 item 3092 and item 3069 to cement the whole "Support is a ward slave" mentality. All this complaining is doing is making people hate item 2049 a more.

I doubt that, Riot pretty much wants everyone to contribute to vision, that's why the limited the number of wards you could place. I also don't like those items getting removed simply because they are useful in other maps and modes.

As for OP's question. I find that I sometimes ask for a rain check. If we are constantly getting pushed into tower, I can't even leave to go plant the vision, without putting myself at risk, abandoning my ADC, or risk losing the tower. But Generally, I buy the sightstone as soon as I am able to make use of the wards it gives me.

Blue Moon Wolf2 votes

If they want everyone to contribute to vision, then Why would they make it so supports are the only champs who can build vision aside from jungle (who can't normally be bothered to get it since it doesn't have a special smite)? Honestly, I would hate for those items to be removed as well, but with how vision items are set up right now, People pretty much are expected to build item 2303 item 2302 or item 2301, which makes buying the other 3 impossible. You can go with item 2045, but that seems to be widely thought of as a waist cause "your taking up 2 slots instead of one". Even if they did remove them from SR, they would likely still be available on other maps since wards don't exist in ARAM (and maybe TT) anyway. But that's neither here nor there. The fact is that Riot is going to be reworking vision and the "support ecosystem" (whatever that means) and no one knows what they are planning. I'd just like it if this topic could at least take a break till we know what exactly Riot is planning to do since it could range from a slight vision change, vision becoming a whole new mechanic, changing how the fog of war works, or even everyone having a item 2049 option. We won't know till it happens.

Odinakos3 votes

Every season apart from this, Rito made easier to contribute to vision from non supports. S5 had abominations in trinkets as you could spam a pink or keep 3 greens up from lvl 9. When i got top, i played Quinn (since i pretty much dont know anything else) and first recall lvl 9 i upgraded my trinket. I could bully my laner, while keeping almost perfect vision so i could not get ganged. For 225 gold. FOW could be turned off and make no difference, It was discusting.

It is not that SS is only for supports. Its the role that makes it a lot better to build. You have 4 sources of income (3 lanes and a jungle) and its better to consentrate the gold rather than distributing. So the one that gets the stick has to build the utility in the team. Thats the support. Not having a SS in the team is a massive disadvandage. Thats why it is the smartest and most efficient for support to build it. Think about it. Does it worth taking of 800 gold from your midlaner so you have your AP item faster? He will be a lot ahead on the gold so whats the point? Those are 40 cs you are denying him. Unless Rito implements a 5th income source, someone has to play low eco and the utility. Not doing otherwise is hampering the team.

As for the support items. Eye upgrades are for supports that need to rush other items. A good example is Zyra (I cringe at Zyras with FQC with no reason). She needs both her pen items to apmlify her great base damage. But all depends on the game. FQC is when your team needs picks and a long range slow helps a lot with that. FotM is to help adcs with Assasins and when locket is not enouph. Talisman is a mini Sivir ult, i rarely have gone the other way around, thats one of the most powerful item actives (and def most underated) in the game. That is along with Ruby which has become a lot better with active item CDR. 4th ward is valuable but yea could make it have some sort of ward regen. As for the jungler item, i prefer it when i dont really need the other 2. Extra vision is golden.

Last but not least. Not having a SS in the team, puts the team at a great disadvandage. I have personally punished supports that skiped SS, and i dont think they understood what happened. Get deep vision, get picks. When tower falls, if i see no SS, i call for repeat gangs on the bot. Objectives become a lot easier, warding deep also. And i have build SS on adc at 20m when my support didnt pick it. Because i could not push at all a winning lane. I cant stand not having vision options as support main. Thats why people cringe at no SS supports.

Blue Moon Wolf2 votes

I think your the first person to actually explain why eye items are useful instead of just blindly saying "item 3092 item 3401 and item 3069 is crap and if you don't agree with me, you are wrong" or "Supports do enough damage, stop asking for more". Honestly I get sight is important and I know that if you take item 3341, then you still need SOMETHING to ward with, I just believe it can be done in a way that would make for a less toxic environment. One where you people don't threaten to report you if you decide to go with item 3050 instead of item 2045.

Back when Riot announced the Eye items I think I was overjoyed cause it felt like we were getting our cake and eating it too. I thought that would start a new era of Supports being able to freely pick what they want to use. But then many complaints about not taking item 2049 later and I feel like we are back to square one where Supports are forced to work one way, be happy about it or get reported. I know Riot can find a happy middle ground where anyone can take a vision based item, support can be the vision focused role on the team if you so choose and not get flamed for believing otherwise.

People like you have no idea what being a ward slave is really like. Back in the day supports were expected to buy a gp10 item or two, boots, and literally nothing else but green wards, pink wards, and oracles.

Sightstone was the single greatest thing Riot ever did for supports.

Sassmast3r2 votes

The only time I_ temporarily_ forfeit a sightstone is when I have 900 gold (thus being able to purchase mobility boots) and I know for a fact that the added mobility will help me not only secure a kill for my midlaner, but also take down a mid lane turret. Sometimes my mid laner's opponent overextends and I know that our jungler alone (although might be able to secure the kill) wouldn't feel as determined to try to take down that mid turret. With me there, not only would I assist in the kill, I also would be a third person that would make pushing down that first mid turret faster. By then I'd easily have 800 gold, return to base, and purchase my sightstone.

Odinakos5 votes

Delaying SS is fine. Skipping it not so much. At some point map will open and vision will be more and more valuable. Until then, yeap SS can be delayed if you can make a difference with other items. It's very hard to carry by your own as support. It doesn't matter how well you try, you have to depend on your ADC, and your team. Building pure utility means you have to depend on them even more. By being a 5th carry, you give yourself a chance to actually be doing the dmg to carry. You need dmg, not utility, at lower elos. What's the point of wards if they don't pay attention to the minimap?

Odinakos2 votes

Noone said about pure utility. Instead of FQC buy Eye of watchers on Zyra. You loose the active but gain the vision which is hidden power iteself (and seriously a lot more powerful than the active). I have carried games with Zyra at gold MMR with going Eye-sorc-guise as my first items. You can argue all you want, but those 800 gold for SS are gonna bring(or deny) a lot more Bronze or Challenger.

That's because you're Zyra. You're a mage, you have high dmg.

Those champs have base dmgs.

Unless they're ridiculously overpowered or are a solo laner type mage/juggernaut/assassin etc. doing half dmg half utility still doesn't let you do significant dmg. You have to go full on damage.

If you cant understand the eco system about income sources and why low income supports pack utility, make yourself (and us )a favor and read some guildes. As a support, you really should be building sightstone, even if the rest of your build is damage and CDR, you need that sightstone.

However, I will admit that there have been times I simply needed something else more than a sightstone, typically because my adc is feeding and I need to regain control of the lane through brute force and to more properly protect my ADC. If supports are the moms, then in these cases I become a mother bear.

On occasion if I'm playing Sona or Soraka I will build this item 3504 to increase my healing and give you an attack speed boost.

Very rarely will I build vision, utility is far more useful when you can not trust ANYONE on your team ever in ANY circumstances. If you belive you can trust your teammates in this game you are beyond delusional

This community is full of over emotional entitled little cucks who act in the same way SJWs do,the amount of times I've seen a post demanding riot implement harsher and harsher measures to protect the feelings of soft weak losers who can not take responsibility for their failues,is insane. These people get hurt over words in a game and stop trying, for what? to have a brief power trip in an online game? That's beyond pathetic and has zero place in a competitive ranked game. This is not a safe space and riot games already coddles your over emotional ass too much.

I mean I like Chess but I am probably in the equivalent of Bronze 5 as a chess player. I really have no idea what I am doing beyond knowing the basic rules. Therefore if there is a technical question about chess I am not about to weigh in although I would watch with interest in an attempt to learn from better players.

Bronze 5 is so far below Average the match making system actually starts having trouble making matches similar to Diamond +. You only get to Bronze 5 by having multiple massive issues with how you play League of Legends builds, map awareness, decision making, mouse control something is just not right.

If I had a serious desire to improve I'd question everything I thought I knew and constantly seek new sources of information about the game. (Hint 36 ap is not a particularly effective rune page.)

Which I do again however your ignoreing my points and trying to focus on my rank come back with legit arguemetns or stop responding to me. I'm not playing your game you are not going to get me to attack you personally or whatever so you can claim victim status. My rune page is not the one I use all the time I used it for a few games to see how it worked, you are right its not wonderful and I droped from bronze 4 with 100. I have more runes and will go back to my other setup. Again respond to my points or stop trying to respond to me at all,i am not a troll I am pointing out logical cold hard facts, about how this community works. Also look at my sona score, look at my sona average look at my sona winrate,I main sona I average 5 kills 14 assits at all times. I got 3 A+'s and 2 S-'s one week. I'ts only when I changed champions and runes that I dropped. Respond to my points or do NOT respond.

My point is that you are so terrible at League your reasoning is highly suspect. Clearly what you are doing is not working and you should completely rethink your approach to the game.

The support that has climbed to Plat has evidence that he doesn't need sightstone. (Though he says he buys it when he needs it) you clearly need several things completely different that what you are currently using. The effectiveness of your reasoning is apparent in the lack of results.

Yeah I'm Bronze 1, I am seriously rethinking all my moves, builds, map awareness, key bindings, monitor set up, positioning the whole nine yards. I am at the bottom end of mediocre, (I did screw my self over duo queuing with a very inconsistent friend for about 20 of my 50 ranked games) but I KNOW I am at the bottom end of mediocre. If I want to improve I need to improve everything.

You suck. Your attitude suggests you don't know just how badly you suck. You delude yourself if you think you don't suck. If a platinum player says that cheesing a very early item 3116 on brand is more powerful than early game vision I am going to believe him based on results.

You don't have any points to address, like may politically minded (young?) people you waste a lot of words on the subject while contributing nothing. Your "points" boil down to, "My team mates suck and don't deserve wards I have to carry because they suck." I personally find trying to carry easier if I can see and predict virtually every enemy movement. Clearly the Plat Brand doesn't need that same level of information, perhaps he is so skilled he can get by without it?

Based on your horrible attitude I question why you even play multiplayer games or interact with any humans. I work a tougher more physical job than the vast majority of North Americans and don't feel the need to call people "pathetic soft kids".

I will call out people who are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE in their chosen field with horrid attitudes though. :)
