Is Sona Mid Troll?

Dakkimchi··11 votes·3,034 views

Do I deserve to get flamed in low elo (low silver) if I bring this out? I played it against riven mid, and I just poked her (with the bandit mastery) and farmed to get support items including athens. We ended up winning the game, and I did not feed by any means. The only detriment was that I could not match the roaming of the riven, so my teammates were pressured early while I could only stay mid.

Sona mid is really good if you are good.

As long as you don't die early and manage to farm up some items you´ll start powerspiking really hard.

And the team tends to forgive you when you pump out 300+ heals every few seconds.

I´ve played it and indeed, early was hell, midgame was interesting and lategame was a stomp for my part.

I went around 2 shotting enemy carries anytime my ulti was off it's extremely low cd^^ ' Sometimes i even got 2 carries at once.

No, though it's a pretty poor pick overall because of the lack of waveclear it has some decent matchups like Katarina and Ziggs and it can help when you have a protect the X comp (Kog'Maw, Twitch, etc.). It became worse because of the rework that took away a lot of her early game bullying power in exchange for a ridiculous level 16 power spike, and early game bullying was generally the reason to pick Sona because her waveclear sucks late game. However, she does get solo exp and therefore gets her level 16 faster, so it's not that bad. You don't deserve to be flamed for it, it's a viable pick, but realize that more often than not there are better choices. Pick it when you have a counterpick, when your team already has some decent waveclear, and/or when someone else on your team is going to carry. You should also be good at Sona!

but then they are very susceptible to ganks, the better way to deal with her mid is to freeze lane and have your jgl get free food

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

Except it really isn't that big of a deal to get ganked in that lane. Sona can NEVER contest your control in one of the bushes and even if you do get ganked before 6 Sona offers nothing in ganks (she loses a lot of damage if she uses the slow which means you will probably live anyway). Even after 6 Sona's range is lower than most other mid laners so it is usually pretty obvious if she is going to ult you unless she uses flash+r but even then she should theoretically never have flash since most junglers can burn her flash by looking at her even when the wave is slightly on her side (Zac E+Q will arguably do 1/3+ her health so she kind of has to flash it every time for example).

reaperteaser2 votes

it kinda depends on sonas jungler and how well they set up and work together, a khazix jumping in while sona hits her e empowered auto lets the kha be sticky enough to make the laner regret pushing so hard. not saying its guna be a fun time farming eith sona just thst she isnt completely defenseless

Just Blame Jenny1 votes

The enemy mid laner isn't going to literally sit there and be free food in your lane, though.

They're also going to push you in, roam, gank bot lane (or top), then come back. All while you're struggling to push back.

I could see this working in norms/very low elo, but even by the time you reach upper silver, players will punish you for it.

If you want to play Sona in an off meta role, I'd consider bot lane carry. With support backup, she should have much better wave control.

(Note: I still wouldn't do this in ranked.)

I've fought this cancer before, if you push and you're not a strong early game duelist she can just chase you down and do half your health with her q and empowered autos, then heal up your harass.

if it works it works, there is never reason to flame. flamers are bad teamates who dont know how to adapt to meta without a redmercy or brofresco video and only want someone else to blame

Eternal Torment2 votes

no, not really. Sona midlane isn't much of a trollpick, it is just way too disatvantageous in usual situations to be considered viable. you are way too fragile (less than 500 hp without runes and lowest base defence stats ingame) and have comparably high manacosts for the long cooldowns earlygame. pre-6 you are literally a found Food for any even remotely aggressive enemy laner. most of the time you as a Sona can already consider yourself challenger Level if you don't lose first blood on lvl 2 against any assassin champion there is.

Sona mid just Spikes too slowly and too rhythmically (heh), she slowly grows power over the games duration, she has no real powerspike compared to other champions, and she scales too hard with items and has no base values whatsoever, the only Thing that is good without any items equipped is her E movement speed boost which has rather high base stats, but other than that you as a midlane Sona are pretty much fucked all the way through.

FakeGravity2 votes

Lack of wave clear is a poor argument when so many other champions lack it as well. Like akali and kassadin Her real issue comes from the fact that she have very poor defensive stats and she rely on her passive for damage. Sure she can work well with items and her healing make it so is not easy to duel her unless you plan on killing her Why not soraka mid? Q for wave clear and an ult that avoid the enemy midlaner get much going somewhere else Or the old janna that use to be able to clear a wave from her turret

Overall utility midlaners seen to share one thing, the ability to wave clear safely

Veraska2 votes

sona mid has good strengths but glaring weaknesses, lack of wave clear/roaming power being the biggest issue, which the higher elo you get, the bigger detriment it becomes, of course in our elo where everyone gets to at least 4 items anyways. it's not that big of an issue

if you lose expect to get all the blame tho, as with most off meta picks

Friendly Ram2 votes

nah sona mid is a more team oriented pick but there's no reason to get mad unless they picked it into something like yas.

Nope, Sion mid works fine. As does Galio mid. Think of them as the ad/ap tank mid duo. If people are giving you crap for it, fuck em.

If you go Sion mid, but noone else in your team wants to go ap. So what? Full ad teams are working these days. But if you wanna, AP Sion works.

Did Sion mid with a ZZ Rot rush for a while. Noone roams when you got ZZ'Rot, I'll tell you that much.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

You miss out on a lot of the power in her kit and I imagine Karma would do the exact same job but better.

I can see it if you really really really want Sona ult but have no room for it in bot lane but even then I'd prefer Annie Kennen Varus Zyra Zilean

Thefrostyviking5 votes

Sona can outright delete a carry without defensive items with just a R-Q-AA with some items.

And heal 500 something every few seconds, i tried it and while early game is the very picture of misery her midgame and lategame is nuts if you didn´t do too poorly on the way there.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I see what you are saying, it lets you get all the power of AP Sona but the gold of midlane so you get the items faster. You probably miss out on some of the crazy damage of other midlaners but that can be made up by having AP in other lanes.

You miss out on a lot of her kit's power in the laning phase but you get that power back but amplified when you start going for skirmishes and teamfights.

Thefrostyviking2 votes

Her lategame is like a constant spam of 700 damage + Q-AA combos mixed with 350 + heals and tons of movementspeed constantly.

And that ultimate also deals some damage with AP.

So when someone which a massively spammable high damage ability+AA combo also brings AOE heals+barrier + speedup and a AOE stun it suddenly makes sense why people can accept the pick even if it seems weird at the start of a game.

I remember at some point doing like 1,3 k damage with a passive stacked Q-AA+lichbane+luden-thunderlord against some carry, and i could repeat it every 3 seconds (just without luden and thunderlord but still) however i was quite fed and my target was squishy.

But it still felt great^^

Nuparu2 votes

Sona's level 1-2 is actually quite strong because her Q-AA, although it won't proc TLD, is quite an extremely hard hitting combo for that stage.

It's kinda like GP in that sense, you cheese early or you farm until items. :P

Here's a Sona trick. When you have two stacks of Power Cord, you can throw out a basic attack, use Q, then throw out another basic attack. Using Q activates Power Cord, which is an auto attack reset, so it's an instant proc of Thunderlord's Decree. The best way to abuse this is to just press Q twice in fountain, then walk to lane and get an instant Thunderlord's Decree with AA+Q+AA. This is why she's an early game bully, she can get so much control just at level 1.

Thefrostyviking1 votes

mm, i main her for support because i find that early trick so satisfying for a supposed buffer support^^

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

No wave clear and you are made of tissue paper while providing little to nothing in exchange. If your lane opponent lets you Q+Staccato on cooldown without them trading back and hitting you even harder that is honestly on them and they would have lost to any other mid lane pick anyway. Even someone like Katarina can Q+E you when you go to poke and chunk you for more than your Staccato since you don't do anything besides run away after you poke since Q has a fairly long cooldown (and doesn't do damage on its own) before 6.

Im Taylor Swift1 votes

I have played her quite a few times and in my elo at least(mid gold) it has lots of times worked for me, i ussually don't build support but burst ap carry and really if you get ahead late game you can one shot an adc with just q auto with power chord. The thing is that an assasin like talon or fizz can make the lane extremely hard, and you are perfect for getting ganked as sona is extremely squishy and has no dash or blink.

People will flame anyone that does poorly in an off meta pick. But do you deserve it? Of course not, no one deserves to be flamed.

Her waveclear and defensive base stats are really bad, I've seen people try it against me and I don't see why, she can't CS after first back like other mids and her only advantage is from good trades which if you misplay she loses most of her health from any opponent. She takes a lot of effort compared to other midlaners and I would try it against only certain champs if you really like it that much.

Escheton1 votes

For real though. Sona doesn't have what it takes to be a midlaner unless you have a dedicated jungler to help you get fed.

StoryDuck1 votes

You shouldn't be flamed but Sona has some serious issues when in mid. Mainly, you have 0 wave clear and solo laners need to be able to clear waves.

Blue Collar Bear1 votes

Nobody deserves to get flamed.

Now, is it troll? Probably not! The reason being is that meta in silver is different from meta in diamond (speaking from my experience in both). The most effective tactics change a lot, and Sona mid is probably just fine in silver. It sounds like you correctly understood the matchup, and you played appropriately.

Project omen1 votes

Sona in general is a troll pick but not in lower elos. Sona mid however: still a troll pick because there are way better picks but as long as you won then it's ok I guess.

Subject 51 votes

It could work in some Scenarios, but you would likely be missing a ton of CS and roaming power if you did pick Sona mid. In that elo though, you REALLY don't need to worry about roaming unless you want to pick up a few extra kills. It would be a better pick vs something like Alistar mid Fizz Karthus mid Veigar mid Zyra mid Swain mid but all of those picks are pretty rare and . . . well, they pretty much offer more. Fizz would be good whether or not you can escape his R and stay out of range, which you should be able to. Veigar outscales, the plant bitch would be the best match up IMO. Swain will stomp the living hell out of your team early and mid game because of your lack of presense - Alistar is an extreme rare mid. Karthus, well. He's Karthus. GP scenario where he loses to everybody.

Please take sona mid when I'm the event jungle. That's my feedback

NekoniClaws1 votes

Pro-play games are all about wave clear, even in bot-lane, that's why you never see Sona support-

But, who cares about high elo? You're in silver! You're exchanging waveclear for some insane AP Burst (can assasinate a fed ADC solo) and one of the best seige champions in game (she's also pretty good at pick). Do take note on whether you're setting your team up for failure or for success. Please don't feel like you need to buy support items. Redemption is poetry on Sona, but she can easily hard carry with AP items!

ChaosThief1 votes

Supports in different lanes are a difficult thing to pull off, but if you do, oh boy there's a reward for your team.

Sona for example, becomes a nuking monstrosity that can wipe an ADC before they can blink with a Q auto.

Nami has a good amount of burst as well as being able to heal and empower autos on allies (when the E's bonus becomes 200-300 magic damage on hit, it becomes quite unpleasant for the enemies.)

Typically supports make excellent use out of non-support items, they simply can't afford them in the support role. This often comes at the price of waveclear, however.

I have tried sona mid, rakan mid, nami mid, nami top, and soraka mid back when the Q had more range. They were all quite comical, especially soraka back in those days. You would land a Q on one enemy and heal 1/2 your hp from the bonus, as well as being able to refill allies quite easily.

I'm quite sad that they're forced down bot lane despite all of this.

I find it hard to believe you bullied out a Riven.

Unless she was shit, she would outscale via 1 item, namely Maw. Hell, even going for flat Lethality or CDR would work.

AP Sona is squishy af and would be easily oneshot by a lvl 6 Riven. Sona's poke is also very telegraphed and easily blocked by E, and it's also low range. Once it's used, Riven has pretty much free reign for a fast combo with W.

That is, unless she was a shit Riven.

I used to play sona mid in norms all the time with varying degrees of success . In my opinion you if you chose a "troll pick" such as Yorick Support, Rammus Top, or even Rumble ADC you should only be flamed IF and ONCE you start to feed! so play these picks at your own risk. to be honest though i dont flame often so im not the best person to answer this XD Rumble Rumble ADC and TahmKench Tahm Kench SUP FTW!!!

NotCounter1 votes

as with anything like that, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt

one game you might go vs a bad diana that plays passive and never does anything and your adc gets fed and carries you. the second game you might go vs a ziggs that actually knows what he's doing and you will be in your tower the whole game with no cs and will auto lose

One Ashe On1 votes

Sona mid is do-able but you have no waveclear and remain pretty squishy unless you toss a RoA and maybe Rylai + liandry in between. It require more farming skill than casual mage but it's do-able.

FreeVolibear1 votes

To assume you can stop a Riven from roaming is unrealistic. You can make her PAY for it by shoving her tower to extinction while pinging MIA. Riven isn't exactly a typical pick for mid either, so you should outpoke her and she will respond by roaming for kills. Ping MIA, shove her lane and your teammates should note the MIA's and play safer when possible. I find that other lanes LOVE to push hard when they get an advantage (Bot and top do so recklessly I find) and they don't want to back off. So they get ganked and die and want someone to blame. Do your part and mute their negative reactions and I don't see a problem.

I totally agree. I bet it took ages for this sona to kill off mid tower, while the riven did her job. It is just infuriating for allies to suffer a fate that could have been avoided by simply picking something else. Possibly the game could have ended eariler if OP did not pick sona, and said teammates did not feel any benefit from the odd pick.

This is ranked. And you need to pick the correct champ or play in order. If you cant do both, there is no excuse.
