Sona's best role is Bot as an ADC substitute.
Remember tank Galio mid? It's kinda like that. You're not a carry, you're more of a utility core.
The main function of a support in the early game is to get your ADC online as soon as possible.
Sona sucks at this, because at that point she isn't online.
- Immobile and extremely squishy.
- Her Q does no damage
- Her heal is inefficient.
- Her E isn't good (yet)
- Powerchord is risky/expensive/infrequent.
You can try running her mid, sure, but your lack of waveclear means you get shoved in, and your stats make you meat to assassins and burst mages.
You can try running her top, sure, and it is better than mid, but as an immobile squishy with no hard CC pre-6 in a long lane, you're asking to get camped.
Jungle is right out.
So, we have "ADC"... and it's kinda perfect.
She sucks early, but scales into a monster after a couple items. She normally struggles to get them, but with the combination of her own peel and the peel of a second support, you're safe enough that a Mejai's is a common pickup.
A late game Sona is absolutely terrifying. If anybody drops below half HP, Dark Harvest Staccato kills them, and with all your buffs you're getting assists constantly, which refresh Dark Harvest. If some poor frontliner tries to... well, do anything, you've got answers. You press Q and five on-hits get triggered on him. If he doesn't die, you can Diminuendo to halve his damage or Tempo to kite him. If people try to run, it doesn't work since you have 100% uptime on a 50% speed boost to yourself (not to mention the allied boost) and a massive 2 second slow on your next power chord.
Oh, right, she also has an AOE 900 range, 1.5 second stun.
You're not a carry, definitely not, but you're a decent threat, you amplify your allies greatly, and you cuck the living shit out of your enemies.
Ban Nocturne, slap on Precision secondary for Presence of Mind (never run OOM in teamfights) and Cut Down (you're so squishy that this amps your damage by 15% against basically everybody), and beg your teammates to pick a hard carry somewhere else.
