Why not AD scaling supports?

Oelyk··2 votes·718 views

Every Support scales purely off AP from the top of my head, why cant we have AD scalings? It would be interesting to have a support that does more DPS with autos while still being effective NOT TO MENTION bringing potentially more item diversity.

I could say the same for ADC that benefits of AP, but thats already possible.

There really isn't the itemization to support them. If there was it would be abused by other roles and get nerfed. Probably because of Ezreal.

God dammit Ezreal. Stop screwing items over for the rest of us!

  1. Supports rarely build ANY scalings.

  2. No support items with AD to make this a decent idea.

And if they make a support item with AD it'll prob be abused by the adc and bruisers.

Oelyk1 votes

Probably GP. Especially if it's a gold gain item though Relic shield is good enough.

I gotta say though, We have supports that are basically just mages, why not supports that build like bruisers?

Bruisers are meant to both do and take damage, but support budget makes that difficult. Some melee supports with high durability will do that, though. Sion or Tahm Kench, for example.

Oelyk1 votes

I could also argue something like Riven's shield can make her a bruiser while also being an integrated part of her kit.

Right now I can think of a few champions that can do support with AD, but are not nearly as effective as the mage supports.

Pantheon Shen

I just realized, Trundle support was a thing, He's all ad but just made it hard for the laner with alot of stat stealing and a massive slow.

50000000000000001 votes

Sion and Poppy are a pretty legitimate AD supports, although they mostly build full tank. Jarvan IV is also decent, as is Pantheon. I don't think Shen is an AD champion, though.

Trundle support is a thing I guess, although Trundle supports don't really build AD though, iirc.

Oelyk1 votes

Thats also true, I just thought of Shen because his damage is all in his autos.

50000000000000001 votes

I think his damage is about 50/50, at least for Sunfire/Titanic build.

Because fighter (diver/juggernaut) play patterns aren't good for a highly reactive role, which doesn't have to be what support is, but that's what the community agrees it needs to be to be "healthy".

Brand Lux Malzahar Zyra Veigar

  1. The community doesn't consider any of those champions as actual supports.

  2. Lux is shit in the support role and I don't see why people are so comfortable picking that shit idea.

  3. If people used their heads for a sec, on Brand/Zyra, they'd STILL build Redemption/Locket, honestly.

Ashe JarvanIV :^)

AD is more of a snowball stat and they've been lowering AP from support items for a while anyway.

Oelyk1 votes

Good point, however I still am curious if this is a possibility.

Ralanr2 votes

Technically it is if you count Sion and Poppy.

Kinda depends on what an AD support would actually do. Presumably it wouldn't be a traditional support. My guess is such a support would likely be a secondary damage champ, possibly debuffing the enemy team. (like say MF)

Then you have the matter of itemization. Creating an AD GP10 item would likely not fly, as it would be picked up by the ADC, granting them more gold as well. But that in mind, if the AD is melee, they can still benefit from the Relic shield line, MF does pretty well with the Spell thief line, and the coin line is relatively universal.

And again, it's difficult to really create an AD support item, that won't get abused by the ADC or other AD's on the team. The closest thing we have right now his Zeek's, which can grant a whopping 50% crit chances once charged.

What is this AD support obsession? Just means the enemy has an easier time stacking resistances

Oelyk1 votes

I think it would be interesting.

everyone can benefit off of building AD, not everyone benefits from AP

and mainly for the reason you just stated, supports aren't ideally supposed to be doing a lot of damage or consistent damage and even if they do it's supposed to be outweighed by their utility

there's not really any way you can mix building AD with utility without it being a balancing nightmare unless they had some very very niche mechanics or utility that would make it difficult to outright exploit

Oelyk1 votes

I could counter argue that "supports" are the same thing, Lux brand malzahar all dish out the damage and minimal cc.

Zane Zephyr1 votes

But they're not traditional supports. They're mages that were taken supports, bar lux. They get played because of their damage and not so much their utility, and they also have to sacrifice one or the other in their build and don't get to fully utilize either one of them.

Oelyk1 votes

Being untraditional doesn't mean that they have been extremely popular and/or highly effective in all elos, even LCS.

Zane Zephyr1 votes

That's not what I'm saying, I'm saying that they're not "classic" supports, like janna or lulu. Brand and malz are not meant for the bot lane. Their kits dont have any buffing or ally-supporting benefits to them.

An AD support that provided utility would have to have too many limitations to make it function. They would have to be melee and have almost zero mobility, because by building AD their auto-harass in lane would be unbearable. Any damage spells woiuld have to have shit for damage for the same reason as well. They also couldn't really have any natural sustain because of lifesteal. There's not any items that would make an AD support work and like others said, other people would abuse it so it wouldnt be possible.

Oelyk1 votes

I don't think support should be whittled down to just heal and CC and warding, the more I think about it, the more I am convinced from two specific examples. MissFortune and Trundle

Both these are good in some way, both based on weakening the enemy or just cleaving defense.

Supports that cripple others even without a ton of hard CC are valuable.

So why not AD scaling supports?

I think the problem this presents to team comps would be more trouble than it'd be worth. Even with some mages taking the marksman position (Ziggs in particular), this would end up most commonly giving you a double-AD bot lane.

Oelyk1 votes

I actually dont think it would be all that bad for "all AD" comps. if top mid jungle and bot are AD and you have a Zyra, thats still all AD in my book. The support gated is gold gated unlike the other roles, hence less ability to deal damage.

On the off hand, it may be possible to bring more power to AP midlaners who are not stacked MR against because more AD threat.

Choten1 votes

There's no AD labeled supports but there are a few you could try.

  1. Any AD fighter with atleast 1 Hard CC and 1 Slow CC i.e JarvanIV Aatrox with item 3302

2.Ashe Permaslows, Vision, Ranged Stun 3.Urgot Slows, Snare/Pull, Damage Reduction, Armor Reduction, Vision (on E) 3.Varus Aoe- Snare, Aoe- Slow, Healing Reduction with item 3303 or item 3301 item 3071 helps your AD teammates and item 3123 stops healing

Any tank can grab an Iceborn and do decent AD damage.

Sure they aren't AD but still.

Also: Sion Poppy
