Everything Wrong With Itemization Ever

Hey guys! I will be starting long post in which i will go into detail about many of the problems with itemization in LoL currently and some solutions to these problems, because I really believe that some better itemization options could solve many of the balance issues which the game faces. I will be updating it as often as possible, as I can't write it all in one chunk.

Armor Penetration

When a niche stat becomes something that is always worth buying, there is clearly a problem with it. Percent Armor Pen is supposed to be the counter to armor-stacking, which Flat Armor Pen is supposed to be for amplifying damage to squishy targets. However, Percent Armor Pen is more effective in nearly every scenario.

First, I want to figure out at what point Percent Armor Pen becomes statistically more effective than Flat Armor Pen. For this I will be using the most common value of Flat Armor Pen, 35% on item 3035 , and the most common value of Percent Armor Pen, 20 on item 3142. Note this is not a comparison of the two items, but a comparison of their Armor Pen stats.

Here we set the armor with Percent Armor Pen applied to the armor with Flat Armor Pen applied and solve for the armor value.

(0..65Armor) = (Armor - 20) (- 0.35Armor) = - 20 Armor = 57.1

So, 35% Armor Pen becomes more effective than +20 Armor Pen when the target has more than 50.1 Armor. Just about every single champion in the game will have this much by the time the enemy has enough gold to buy the item. Thus, Percent Armor Pen is nearly ALWAYS more effective than Flat Armor Pen; there is really no choice to make between the two. Keep in mind that item 3035 is also a cheaper item than item 3142, making it more cost-efficient as well.

Thanks for reading! There is much more to come.

Your math is bad: 35% armor pen means that the target is taken to 65% of their armor, so .65armor=(armor-20)

20=.35armor armor = 57.14

Still not a terribly high number, but you also have to remember that last whisper also only grants 40AD, while Ghostblade grants 30AD, 15% crit chance, 10%CDR and a very powerful active. With all that taken into account, Ghostblade ends up being a lot more valuable than last whisper in the early-mid game, despite granting less armor pen.

Thank you for pointing that out. I can't believe I made such a dumb mistake taking Calculus. As for the other stats you mentioned - I decided only to look at armor pen values to prov how strong the percent armor pen stat is on its own and in general, because CDR, crit chance, and the active will have many varying effects depending on the champ, the scenario, etc.

But the thing is, before certain Armor values, last whisper is going to be way less valuable than another damage item, because while the armor pen may seem huge, it comes at the cost of an item slot granting only 40AD. %pen is only valuable late game on champions who already have big-ticket damage items.

That is the problem I have with the item. It has become a staple buy for all AD champions, whether the enemy is stacking armor or not, and even whether they are attacking tanks or not. The fact that champions like Zed, Talon, and Pantheon can get away with always buying Last Whispers when they are not even meant to attack tanks is what bothers me.

Your math is off.

item 3035 is indeed too generally applicable. Probably should change the item to % bonus armor.
