@Riot @Vel'Koz Mains - What We Like About Vel'Koz: A Genuine Discussion Regarding the Mage Update

Okay. First thing's first. This is not a place to complain about the Vel'Koz update or to start some noble quest to "save" Vel'koz. We have to understand that, whether we like it or, some changes are most likely going to be made to Vel'Koz, and it's not productive of us to complain about it or to bash Riot. Trust me, the update will go a lot better if we get involved early in the process and help collaborate with Riot. That being said, this is a place to have a serious and genuine discussion about Vel'koz in the context of the immobile mage update. There are some guiding questions for discussion below, but feel free to share any comments, questions, or concerns you have - as long as they're phrased constructively.

Topics to Discuss:

  • What draws you to play Vel'Koz? What do you like about him? Do you dislike anything about him?

  • What do think distinguishes Vel'Koz from the other artillery mages?

  • What do you feel are Vel'Koz's strengths and weaknesses, and how do these contribute to his feel as a champion and his role in team comps?

  • How do you feel about the skill cap of Vel'Koz? Too low? Too high? Is he an easy-to-learn, hard-to-master kind of champ, or is he something else?

  • Would you like Vel'Koz's ability to play both support and mid to be left intact, or should one role be prioritized?

  • Are there any skills that should just be left alone? Which ones should be changed? Do you have any ideas to change them?

  • Best feeling to have when playing as Vel'Koz? Worst? Best Moment you've had playing Vel'Koz? Worst?

  • Anything else you feel needs to be discussed?

Thanks for taking a look guys. Take some time to answer some of these questions if you feel inclined. I'll be doing the same. Also, lets try to get this to the front page and make it visible, so everyone can share feedback and Riot can see. Remember: this is to help make the Vel'Koz update go well, and to keep our favorite floating eyeball monster as knowledgeable, deadly, and as geometrically apt as possible.

He is my main and I honestly don't want a thing to be touched on him. He is one of the most balanced champions in the game. Take skill to use. Very rewarding when used correctly. Killed easily without proper placement and map awareness. I just went 14-1-11 in a ranked game with him. He is my go to mid lane champ and I don't want anything to happen to him.

What I like most about Vel'Koz is his comboing. I like that one has to actually be pretty skillful to pull the combo off right. Unlike some mages, who can toss out their cc skillshots and wait to see if they hit or not, Vel'Koz has to completely commmit to a combo - tossing his e and w nearly simultaneously in order to make sure the enemy is locked in place long enough for the second portion of his w to hit and proc his passive. This means that, if Vel'Koz misses his e, he loses a lot of mana and will probably eat some harass, but also that, if he is successful, he will do huge damage and open up an opportunity to q and ult for a kill. One of the best feelings as Vel'Koz is definitely firing off your entire spell rotation at once, since his casts are very quick, and watching enemies just melt in front of you. Being all skillshot-based, the combo is pretty difficult to successfully pull off, but I actually like this aspect of Vel'Koz because it helps distinguish the good Vel'Koz's from the bad and makes him a very rewarding champ to get good at.

What I think makes Vel'Koz Unique as an artillery mage:

His spamminess makes him feel awesome to play. Champs like lux or xerath generally get one or two combos off in a fight, but with some cdr, Vel'Koz can chuck his spells around for the entire time. He does not have the utility of lux, nor the super-long ranged poke of xerath, ziggs, and lux, nor the zone control of lux and ziggs, nor the long lockdown of lux and xerath. Vel'Koz is about pumping raw damage straight into the hearts of your foes. He has fast and devastating combos, but not necessarily burst.

i want his passive to have some sort of interaction with his autos. that animation and being not a projectile is unique in itself.

I like the fact that Vel' Koz has clear balance. His entire kit is set up by his E, and if you miss that, its down for like 10 seconds. He can build differently depending on the game, can solo carry, peel, kite, and still deal high damage.
