IP Gains Are Unbearably Small

So I just found out about this website:

http://wasted-on-lol.com/stats/na/thomasb1215/

Like seriously, 155 days of my life. That's closing on half a year. I'ts kind of absurd that I've played that much, but even more so that I still haven't earned enough IP to buy all of the champs/runes. I have all the champs (I think I bought only two of them with RP if I remember correctly), but I still have a lot of runes to buy and only 5 rune pages. It makes me wonder how people who don't sit on the game all day long grinding IP would even manage to buy a decent-sized pool of champions. This is a pretty big problem with accessibility to game content, some of which is essential to playing, such as runes. Even when it comes to champions, the cost of buying new champions is a huge burden to new players.

The purpose of the IP system is clearly to keep people playing the game, so something like regular double-IP weekends would help to bring players online and reward them with some extra IP.

Perhaps other people have some good suggestions as to how to accomplish this. I think it's something that really should be looked into.

Edit: When I say 155 days I mean time I've spent in games, not time since I created my account.

Edit 2: I see some people saying that you don't need all of the champions. Trust me, what I have is plenty for me. I was more of using my circumstance as an example just to show how crazy the costs are. I could very well be somewhere around 10k games, and the fact that that many doesn't unlock me everything is kind of crazy. Keeping that in mind, I can't imagine how hard it would be for people who only play casually and infrequently to even get a decently-sized champ pool and the runes needed to play.

It's almost like they're trying to make money from this game... weird...

I have played 101 days according to the site and still lack 28 champs (17x 6300, 10x 4800 and 1x3150). However, I don't really miss them. There are only about 40 champs that I play regularly. I do have 19 runepages and all runes I need. (That's far from having all runes, though, I have maybe 1/5th)

I don't think that getting champs should get any faster as you don't need more than about 20 champs for competitive play since a larger champ pool requires much more training to get good with all of them. On top of that, if you just want to play something for fun, you can pick something from the free champion rotation. During my first year of League, I barely played champions that I owned.

However, I agree that the pricing of runes is just dirty. They ARE required. No matter what champion you play, without runes, you'll never be able to play competitively as you have a HUGE disadvantage early game (which drags on the entire game). I think runes and runepages are way more important than champions, but since they cost so much, people often prefer to buy yet another champ instead. The whole Runes system needs to be reworked IMO. They're noob-unfriendly as hell in an already noob-unfriendly game. League will never become an easy game to learn, but it doesn't have to be artificially difficult for new players.

Why would you WANT all champions though?, I've been playing since S4 sporadically, and I'm looking at full runes, 10 rune pages, and already more champions than I could ever consistently play.

(Then again, I hoarded IP like a madman when they announced double rune pages and spent 18900IP on a mega-pack of pages).

you only played for half a year and you already have all the champs and 5 rune pages. And I thought i played too much. I've been playing for 2 years and I have less than you.

Desiderium8/18/2015, 10:32:14 PM3 votes

I have been playing this game for almost four years.

If I spent all the IP I have collected, I wouldn't be able to get half of the roster.

Something needs to change.

Paero8/19/2015, 12:29:27 PM2 votes

wow man thats a shit load of time spent. I've been playing since beta and im still unranked haha http://wasted-on-lol.com/stats/na/paero/

Thryale8/19/2015, 4:52:00 AM1 votes

really? and here I'm sitting with 50k+ ip. albeit I haven't bothered to buy every champ cuz I don't even play most of the champs I do own. ( have about half the roster)

but I do boast an impressive rune library. ;)

I do agree with ur opinions. I get that Riot Games wanna profit on the game but still i think it's overpricey. Since they already got 2390429034890 people that's playing it so i doubt they will lose money.

The thing that annoys me the most is the fact that some skins can cost up to 1500 RP. Thats like WTF.

I just merged from HoN from about 2 weeks and the prices here in LoL are absurd. Some champs are up to 975 RP(Zac ) which is already too much. Bought Nautilus for 4800 IP after saving for about 4-5 days, i wanted the Astronautilus and found it that it costs like 15£?! And you cant even buy the skins with IP. Sure if you wanna change ur name, move to a server or something like that - you can overprice it but regular champions and skins feels abit greedy. item 3301

Im soon 21 and i cant even imagine how long its gonna take for me to get everything. All the fun heroes are above 4k IP -_-

DiminishedAC8/19/2015, 6:02:42 AM1 votes

People complain about this all the time, but you have to realize, they're a business. Yes, they made a free game, but they entice players by saying, "Hey, there's a lot of stuff to buy! But, there's really only 1 thing you can't buy with real money, so why not use your hard-earned IP on those runes? I mean, $5 for a champion you've been wanting for a while isn't so bad, right?

League of Potato8/19/2015, 10:29:19 AM1 votes

So I've spent about 20 days of my life on league according to this site...sounds accurate. I have all but 7 champions, but I have bought a few bundles, love my gothic Annie <3, along with getting randomly gifted $100 worth of RP from one of my friends, so I bought a few champs that were on sale. If I didn't buy any of those champs with RP I'd probably have around 40-50 champions, no regrets.

Only champs I don't have are Bard Ekko Diana Heimerdinger Kalista Karma TahmKench

His Goatliness8/19/2015, 7:05:32 PM1 votes

Only 122 days? I honestly thought it would be closer to a year. what does that rank mean? ranked 31.543th on NA?

EDIT: 31thousand?

Bastard Chief8/19/2015, 7:28:41 PM1 votes

I would like to have double IP weekends, and holidays. Even increasing the IP for each win to be around 150-200 IP, and each loss to 90 IP would be amazing.

Luckily tho I got most of the champions I want, despite forking some cash under 40 dollars to buy what I wanted. I do got a full AP damage rune page, and a full AD rune page. Now I can focus on getting other runes like armor penetration, attack speed, whatever I want, or just continue buying champions.

Arcade Andrew8/19/2015, 7:33:36 PM1 votes

I own every champion and have several rune pages

tons of skins: Im not rich I just have nice friends that gifted me a bunch of champs (to own them all) then my own moeny for skins (thanks rito my wallet hurts)

and as for runes ive been playing since the end of S1 about 5+ games a day; I never bought the low tiered runes my friends told me to wait until level 30 when I first started which is why I ended up with like 50k+ IP I had never spent by the time I hit thirty and got tons of runes

Azure Hamster8/19/2015, 8:13:17 PM1 votes

If you're not having fun, don't play. Seems pretty simple. Looking at playing LoL as just grinding IP so you can buy more stuff in LoL, then you're looking at it in an unhealthy way.

Why unlock more heroes if all you're going to do is just keep grinding to unlock more heroes?

Chaotic Sage8/19/2015, 8:24:45 PM1 votes

Um, I have under 100 days played, have all but 2 champs because I don't want to own them, have the max amount of rune pages using only IP and enough runes to have a huge variety...with over 25k leftover IP. Have a friend that's played only a little over 100 days with 56k extra and similar stats otherwise. I've only purchased 1 champ with RP and I refunded that because I realized I didn't like it and just purchased it with IP a bit later because I still like owning all of them except the 2 I dislike. Thinking ARAMs could be the difference though, as it appears as though you've played very few?

Zebrion8/19/2015, 10:56:17 PM1 votes

There's one inherent flaw with your entire assumption that IP gains are too low: that you should be able to play a game entirely for free. Riot has employees to pay, and the fact that you don't want to give them money for producing a product that you obviously enjoy using, that means you aren't respecting their work.

The development team (in spite of what the forums might say) puts incredible amounts of work into this game. Between art teams releasing new skins, the balance team having to reevaluate every champion every month (seriously sit and count how many there are), the community management trying to herd cats here in the forums - running the most played game in the world isn't cheap. If you don't want to pay, you grind, that's how it is. If you like the game, toss some money toward Riot for providing a high quality game as their reward, and you get to buy some stuff (champs and skins) as an extra bonus.

TL:DR stop being a cheap asshat

I've played for 35 days and I'm 474,125th on the NA servers and 2,666,338th in the world. why do i feel like I'm actually good at the game?

klondikebarr8/19/2015, 11:45:45 PM1 votes

play heroes of the storm then, come bitch to me

Wannabe Dunkey8/20/2015, 3:44:21 AM1 votes

89 days, nearly all champions, barely any runes. Only thing I think they should change is rune pricing.

Learnding8/20/2015, 9:37:51 AM1 votes

Be lucky you get enough IP gains to get what you need in a month or so. Go over to Hearthstone and try to play Free to Play, TRY IT. See how long it takes you to get anything reasonable.

MilfHuntUnitXJ98/20/2015, 9:40:41 AM1 votes

Damn, i figured out i have an average of 37 kills per game out of my 185 victories and however many loses

MilfHuntUnitXJ98/20/2015, 9:42:31 AM1 votes

I have a tenth of amount of kills as you in a 40th of the amount of games. What are you a support main?

PaladinNO8/18/2015, 7:19:14 PM1 votes

Something's happened to that page - it used to be accurate, but something has made the readings being way off: http://wasted-on-lol.com/stats/eune/paladinno/

You've spent about 2774 hours on League of Legends which means 116 days of your life

You are 19.038th on Europe Nordic & East servers and 205.985th in the world.

Well, are you proud of this ;-) ?

For me is says "only" 116 days spent playing since May 2013 (the month of my signup - the mods frown upon exact dates being posted), and since that time I have earned a total of 589186 IP* (I know because I keep an Excel sheet with every purchase I've ever made in this game), which averages ~5079 IP a day. Which is a rather impossible number to achieve.

247350 IP spent on champions. 142729 IP spent on runes/runepages. 14003 IP spent on icons. 185104 IP currently in excess.

Still missing 39 champions, but I don't see the point in having all of them (because ARAM).

Penta Penguin8/18/2015, 8:57:59 PM1 votes

shut up they need money they're starving artists, they're only the biggest game company in the world what do you expect money to grow on trees or something?!

Baunjo8/19/2015, 12:04:01 AM1 votes

You guys do understand this game is FREE right? Realistically buying champions with IP sucks, and im ok with that. They need to make money somehow to keep the game running. It's true they are doing what they love, but they cannot run a charity organization

Llanite8/19/2015, 1:03:52 AM1 votes

You're not getting all contents without playing since day 1. Welfare is at play here, IP gains are adjusted with win of the day in mind and you have to grind x5 as hard just to make x2 more IP to someone who plays only 1 AI game a day.

If you are late to the party, the only way to get all contents is to supplement with real money.

ive played since late season 2 and i own all the champions i never even got them with RP i bought them all with IP
