Why are AP Mages being turned into the only class that needs to recall late game?

DrCyanide··170 votes·17,801 views

A Tank can get item 3083 and be healthy as can be in a few seconds time. A Fighter or Marksman can get Lifesteal (from items such as item 3812) and be full health as soon as they find a Jungle Camp to kill. An AD Caster can get item 3508 to replenish their mana while they auto attack said Jungle Camp.

So why are Mages losing Mana Regen and Spell Vamp, being forced to recall instead of staying with their team?

It's a decent question. I'll look into what the expectation for this is on Monday.

Back when season 5 launched, a lot of mages, the majority of them in fact, had their mana regen and mana regen per level reduced by a significant amount, due to many AP items having adjustments made to mana regen. Now that mana regeneration is being removed from most, if not, all AP items, will every mage receive compensation buffs to their mana regen?

Not to mention blue mana pots were removed in season 6 preseason.

Messaiga1 votes

The mana regeneration champions in Preseason 5 were done to regulate everyone so you don't have mages who are more effective with mana regeneration based on stats. The change that affected most champions was the switch from flat mana regeneration on items (I.E. +20 mana regen per 5) to mana regeneration based on that champion's current base mana regeneration (I.E. +100% base mana regen per 5). This is the change that made mages a bit less strong early as mana regeneration from items was lower early (and the same, later).

If mana regeneration across mage champions was to be touched, I could only see mana regeneration per level changed.

Lissandra Mana and mana regen wasn't touched. Mana regen went from core to waste on her in 1 patch.

Lmao you don't even know?

Not everyone in the company knows everything about the game. Riot is not a single entity, but made up of people, and I'm sure some of them are unsure about any change that's made. The response is just to inform the community that: "yes this is a valid argument, and I'll be taking it into consideration"

Retillin9 votes

True, but RiotRepertoir is one of the leads on the Mid Year Mage Update. Don't you think he should be in those conversations?

Trídent5 votes

He needs to make sure the rest of the committee agrees with him though

It's possible they had not considered mages/mana regen from this angle. Think for a moment of the way they are currently balancing mana. In the early to mid game, and especially during laning, mages are supposed to get damage options and utility but are supposed to be limited by mana pools, you should be able to outlast them. This paradigm is a somewhat important part of the itemization changes, perhaps a focus on this effect led riot to neglect the lategame implications of these changes, namely what the OP mentioned.

RiotReav316 votes

Many teams are working on the mid year Mage update. Statikk is actually the design lead of the champion update team and RR is a designer on the champion update team. The systems team is handling the itemization. Xypherous is the lead of the systems team.

Glad you are looking into it, but this should have definitely been a serious point of consideration for the changes and balance concerns. This paints a picture of leaping before looking, which funny enough has been shown to be a strong consistent them with Riot design and balance philosophies for some time now. It feels as if many normal points in the iteration of change are being skipped.

Dude you can let something hit you a bunch and get back Mana. Seems fair.

I don't know why we are acting like any full mages actually utilized spell vamp as it is.

DrCyanide40 votes

No one bought it, true, but I think many people expected the mid-year mage update to even out the healing between AP and AD champions (what with Vlad being reworked and everything).

Instead of getting something that was a new attempt at healing for Mages, we've been told to get better boots, buy a new item with a dash and use that to get back to the action a little faster.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

Though you're not wrong, but they're working on the MP/5, CDR, AP, and MR parts first.

Unless somewhere they hinted these are the only things they're working on...

AMYS GRAVE8 votes

In the announcement post on the PBE boards he suggests that in the MYMU those are what are being addressed. Any further item updates would come at a later date (read months down the line minimum).

RisenDarkKnight8 votes

I actually bought it in some super late game scenarios. Like wasting an item slot on item 3152 is better than having to recall every time you step on a teemo shroom or get hit by a Varus Q.

Whenever someone spells losing as 'loosing', my brain just deletes itself.

Because mages are suppose to be good in teamfights. Even the spitpush version still have decent utility in their kit. I think it's a good idea they move mana regen more towards supports. It's actualy an really healthy way to ballance them out.

Kitten of Evil33 votes

Are ADCs not good in teamfights?

KING 5HARK20 votes

At this point ADCs are tanking Veigar burst with Deaths Dance, Maw and steraks. They "deserve" to be god at everything because "muh positioning, muh kiting-mechanics"

OneSmoothDude7 votes

You're talking about top lane ADCs, those being Quinn and Graves. They're their own issue, sure.

But as far as actual ADCs go, down in bot lane, they don't build those items early. They go IE/ER and then into a Zeal item. After that point they have the option to go for one of those items. That's assuming they want to not do damage (so no IE, ER, BT, or other Zeal item, which kind of goes against the idea of that class) and don't need to get QSS.

ADCs don't "tank Veigar burst" unless they specifically itemize against it, and they're at 5-6 items. Quit circlejerking.

KING 5HARK3 votes

I really didnt think anyone would take this seriously

ForgiveColour3 votes

Farm your circlejerk upvote more lmao. Only trash like you would think his post was troll and bot lane adc builds steraks maw and deathdance together LOL

KING 5HARK5 votes

Boy who hurt your feelings, wtf? So its fine if idiots circlejerk about assassins but if someone makes a joke about your precious marksmen its the end of the world? I guess you are just a salty adc main, but whatever, cry somewhere else

Lets pretend tanks actually build item 3083 and "AD Casters" are actually a thing.

Lucian Sivir Corki MissFortune Ezreal Graves Jayce Varus

Dealth1 votes

Oh you meant ADCs. Those are supposed to have sustain.

angery pout18 votes

All of those carries build item 3508 because they're not entirely auto reliant and use spells for a large portion of their damage. Hence AD caster.

Ashe Draven Caitlyn Vayne Tristana Teemo Quinn KogMaw Jinx are all ADCs as well but have a significantly lower reliance on spells for damage.

All of the champions I've posted in this thread now are ADCs. Being an ADC is unrelated to if you're an AD caster.

ADC.....Attack Damage Caster

Problem solved.

ADC = Attack Damage CARRY

Nilok9 votes

Zed Talon Pantheon

Dealth3 votes

Those are assassins.

And we all know how badly Zed needs mana regeneration...

Nilok19 votes

They may be played as assassins, but by their definition, a Champion that deals the majority of their damage through their spell [casts] instead of their auto attacks, and scales off AD, they are AD casters.

Also, Pantheon is probably the oldest and first AD caster.

Gangplank Illaoi LeeSin Riven Talon Zed Yorick Please explain to me how these champions aren't considered AD casters to you.

Dealth1 votes

I just realized "AD Caster" is an extremely subjective term. That was my fault.

The way I thought of "AD Caster" is basically like a mage that scales off AD. Mages are ranged and cast spells from a distance. Most of these champions are like Ekko or Fizz, a melee assassin-fighter type champion depending on how you build them. Not a mage or a "Caster"

The only "AD Casters" I would consider would be Urgot and Jayce. Urgot is basically an AD cassopeia and Jayce has the range and utility of a mage. None of these champions you listed would use Essence Reaver, but Jayce and Urgot would both benefit off this item.

The ADC casters that were mentioned (Besides Lucian, Sivir, and MF who are extremely auto-attack reliant) I suppose could fit this description but very awkwardly being half auto attack reliant and half ability reliant. Take Jayce and Urgot for example, their auto attacks are not that good but the auto attacks of the ADC's mentioned (minus Jayce) are extremely potent.

The Voids Call2 votes

so say champions like Gragas Rumble aren't casters from your description?

Dealth1 votes

Rumble is a fighter/bruiser

If you play Gragas in the jungle he is a tanky initiator. If you play him Mid using barrels as his main source of damage then you might be able to be a pseudo-mage but for the most part he is an initiator tank.

I would consider Galio a melee-mage since he is not a threat at melee range like Gragas or Rumble is. He uses his abilities at ranged distances to deal damage. He can also be played as a tank though which isn't wrong either.

Here the champions I would consider Casters (Not assassins, not fighters, not bruisers) Ahri Anivia Annie Azir Brand Cassiopeia Fiddlesticks Galio Heimerdinger Karthus Karma Kennen Lissandra Lux Malzahar Morgana Orianna Ryze Swain Syndra TwistedFate Veigar Viktor Velkoz Xerath Ziggs Zilean Zyra Urgot

I don't think you could take any of those champions you listed fit in with these even if you made them scale off AP.

... umm except that you very easily could take Illaoi for example... she doesn't give a fuck what she scales with, if you changed all of her kit to scale with AP, she would play exactly the same and be equally effective.

Dammit riot, reaver is giving all these ad casters mana so they never need to go back!

Shadragon6 votes

I remember building old essence reaver on Talon because it was the cheapest BF sword upgrade and was the best way to stack insane amounts of AD. I also remember building 6 of them on Varus in URF for the same reason.

Athene's mana regen isn't touched upon that hard. Check it out: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OeB-4tVSPd8/VwhU0YGD1hI/AAAAAAAANTg/gZXWoIDeAEEzMnT0jEWzIB5GETixv6gQw/s1600/athenes.jpg

You can gain up to 175% base mana regeneration from it, and it's cheaper by 600 gold.
