Can we get an explanation why Rito uses MMR instead of Rank
...when matchmaking ranked teams against each other?
I'm not upset, I just legitimately don't get it anymore.
Everyone go over to ask Rito and ask them for the thought process behind it.

Rank is for you to feel proud and show your friends. It exists for psychological reasons only. The ranking system uses a variable ratio reinforcement schedule (promo games for instance) which is known as the most addictive type of operant conditioning. It's just smart business.
It also gives you something to strive for and lets you relax a bit once you get there so you can bask in your won glory. :D Eventually, you'll tend to want more anyway but without this it may be too stressful at times.
If I were trying to make the most accurate and fair ranking system, I would only use MMR and also wouldn't combine Flex and SQ games for champion winrates. In fact, I'd probably try to separate out rankings based on role. However, as a game company, there are more motivations at play and I might come to Riot's view.
On the positive side though, switching to MMR would make boosting less attractive. You can't just get boosted to Plat 5 and then sit there while performing as a Gold 4 player so boosted players wouldn't maintain their ranking for long. With that said, there are many legitimate Plat 5s (including myself on other accounts) who hit Plat. and then switch focus to learning/testing/fun more than optimizing winning. Thus, not all Plat. players with compromised MMRs are actually boosted.
That's literally the purpose of 'matchmaking rating' - to track the matchmakers estimation of your true skill level separately from your currently earned rank.
Because you can have 2 players in Gold 5 that should not be playing together, honestly. Especially with the promo system, you can have someone who has hit promos several times and someone who has 5 losses at 0LP and they are both technically Gold 5, but vastly different MMRs
MMR is your true skill rating that is hidden. Rank is just some badge that is easy to read who is good or bad. Granted back then when elo was basically MMR. It was easy to know how good you were because you were given a badge depending on the elo you were in.
Because Riot can't do anything right
Idk, i dont really care which system we use. Once i got better internet im not really struggling too much with bronze anymore
Rank is just the sugar coating and lets riot give out end of season rewards easier. MMR is all that really matters.
