Karthus: Requiem

Heyo everyone,

To me, it seems Karthus' ult is in a pretty underpowered spot, considering it is one of the (I believe, anyways) defining part of his kit.

With a base damage of 250/400/550, and a scaling value of 60% of AP, it isn't very devastating early levels due to the base 23% magic reduction all champions have. It isn' very devastating late-game, as it has a 200/180/160 that comes with it (which is only a **94.75 second **cooldown at lvl 18 with 45% CDR, which isn't very good versus just about every other ult late-game because of this cooldown.)

It is also worth mentioning that if the spell is interrupted in any way, it is reset to its full cooldown, which is pretty devastating not to the enemy, but to the Karthus player and his team. (I've had plenty of incidents where I press R and someone pops in and displaces me or kills me, putting my ult on a 152 second cooldown, its pretty frustrating, with him being a Death Herald and such letting death stop him, hah.)

A few solutions I could see to this problem would be some of the following, or different combos:

1.) Lowering his cooldown. I find it extremely stressful finding the right moment to use a cool spell when I have to wait a full 3 minutes to use it again. I would suggest a 20-40 second cooldown buff to his ult, at least.

2.) Giving a slight buff to his damage. As it stands, his damage output is fairly weak considering he has to get up and personal with his opponents for his Defile, and his Lay Waste is extremely hard to hit on any decent person. it doesn't have to be a big buff, could be only +25 damage on his ult flat, and/or a 5% scaling buff.

3.) Not allowing Death to stop him. It is extremely silly to allow a Herald of Death to be stopped by something silly such as death. I would propose not letting death cancel his Requiem.

4.) Reducing the cooldown of his ult when he is CC'd same thing as not allowing death to stop him. its very frustrating and I believe he should get a reduced cooldown on his ult if he gets it cancelled.

Anyways, I don't think these would all be in at once, but I hope at least one of them gets through. good luck on the rift everyone!

surely, you jest.

Karthus is balanced, if not stronger than most. Buffing him in any way would break him.

Late game isn't devastating? He presses r and all enemy squishies on the map lose 50% of their health. and you can't break his channel while he's in his passive, which is kind of when you should use his r anyway.

The counterplay to stupid karthus players using their ult while they're vulnerable IS to pop in and stop it. God knows that ult is strong enough as is... giving it even a partial cd refund for the karthus player being stupid would not be a good move.

If he was stronger than most, he would surely be picked far more than he is right now.

The problem is he has absolutely no reliable kill potential, including his ult, simply because of all the shields/heals that exist in the game, and the fact that everyone can avoid every Lay Waste he puts out. With his ult killing squishies, most of them would have some sort of MR item (item 3001 or item 3139) that would negate a nice amount of damage, not to mention that ADC's can just lifesteal it all back, and most people have shields and heals to expend.

I understand its counterplay, but that is also his only reliable spell that happens to have one of the longest cooldowns in the game. Having it be fully reset to the whole 200/180/160 +cdr cooldown for not doing anything is absolutely disgusting, compared to every other ultimate (other than maybe Fiddlesticks) that has either a decent cooldown or gets (partially or otherwise) refunded if it isn't used.

And thematically, Death shouldn't stop his ult from being cast.

That's my 3 cents on that part anyways, good luck on the Fields of Justice!

the thing that is most frustrating is when you are death and try to get down some q's and suddenly can't ult anymore.

They should make his passive 5sec long down from 7 but let him cast his ult anytime. (he would just disappear mid cast but still it would continue)

You're forgetting it hits all 5 champs no matter what, anywhere on the map. Base damage is 1250 damage guaranteed (plus whatever AP scaling) in total. His ult does not need buffs, as I don't play him or see him I can't say how balanced he is, but those who play him regularly seem to do well.

In which you must also be forgetting that compared to his other spells, Requiem is his only reliable damage source, which is still a bit skeptical.

We have to take into account that most teams have shields or heals (self or otherwise) which can negate part of that ult, in which is also further reduced by Magic Resist, by at least 23% at lvl 6 unless you run magic pen items. And if we consider people buying item 3001 item 3139 and item 3111, it is extremely hard to get a good ult off. And if we also take into account the Recall, it takes about 20 second out of your lane unless you happen to be at the platform or were low already and happen to want to go back.

Karthus simply isn't in the best spot in my eyes. His only reliable and pretty iconic ability is extremely weak compared to every chance out there. I would just like a little love for him.
