Not-So-Daily Reminder That Runes Cost a Butt-Ton of IP

Avios1··207 votes·6,496 views

Math, you might ask? Here is the Math: Tier 2 runes cost: 1 each, rune, glyph, seal, quintessence, for a maximum possible of 30 IP out of your pocket.

Tier 3 Runes cost: 205, 410, 820 possible cost of Marks, Seals, and Glyphs, with 205 being the least efficient, 410 being mediocore/niche, and 820 being highest-possible efficiency (normally).

Quintessences cost 512, 1025, and 2050 respectively, With 512 being the least efficient compared to their counterparts, the 1025s and 2050s.

If we do some more math here, the cheapest (and least efficient) rune page one could by with tier 3 Runes would be as follows: 9 Marks, 205 each x9 9 Seals, 205 each x9 9 Glyphs, 205 each x9 3 Quintessences, 512 x3

Respectively, those would be the costs of: 2059=1845 for Marks, Seals, and Glyphs. 5123=1536 for Quintessences.

And adding it all up, would equal to:

1845 * 3 + 1536 = (5535) + 1536 = 7071

With statistics from Riot's Support Site, the average player receives 100 IP on a 37 minute win and 68 on a 37 minute loss.

Starting at the average of 6300 per rune page, that would equal around 76 games with a 50% winrate (2584 for losses, 3800 for wins)

With an average winrate of 50%, (NOT Taking into account FWOTD) with about 84 games (42 wins, with a total of 4200+2856, 42 losses) will yield slightly lower, aiming at around 7056 IP will get you the cheapest rune page you can buy.

If we were to buy a regular page, (410 marks, glyphs, seals, 1025/512 quints), it would look like this: 4109=36903=11070 IP for just those 3 Add about 3075 or 1536 for Quints 11070+3075=14145 with an average 50% winrate, with around 170 games, (85 wins, 85 losses) will equal 14280, (5780+8500) which is a little higher than 14145.

or 11070+1536=12606 with an average winrate of 50% with around 150 games (75 wins, 75 losses) will equal around 12,600, (5100+7500) which is a little lower than 12606.

The most expensive rune page would cost around:

8209=7380 73803=22140 22140+6150=28290

50% winrate, with 168 wins AND losses, would equal:

11424 (losses)+16800(wins)=28224, which is slightly lower than 28290.

336 Games.

336 games to get the most expensive rune page, which is easily more than 207 Hours, without sleeping, eating, Que times, etc.

It is simply far too much of a grind to get a rune page + a decent set of Runes, compared to tier 2 runes which take me a game to get a full set.

Possible solutions:

1.) Take off the last number at the end of the Runes cost, making them cost 20, 41, 82 respectively for Marks, Seals, Glyphs, and 51, 102, 205 respectively for Quints, which would allow for people to still have to play games, but not pour their life into the game to get a set of Runes out of it.

OR (one of the more drastic ones)

2.) Remove the cost of runes completely, make them all in your inventory and available for use

No because then smurfs would have an easier time! Fuck legitimate new players who outnumber them 10 to 1 am I right?

Can't have the innocent majority gaining a better gaming experience just because the douchebag minority gets one too.

Avios123 votes

I'm completely confused...

How would Smurfs have a better time, other than that they know what runes to take?

This opens up for people who have stuff to do outside of Video Games, such as Work, Children, Recreational Activities, and my personal favorite, Sleeping.

You should know that this opens up the opportunity for everyone to have access to, as a whole.

Generally, new players get the short end of the stick anyways, With a crappy tutorial and having everything locked until specific levels, it just, in my sincere opinion, needs to be overhauled and remade.

NoSkillWrecking10 votes

I am too, and I agree that Runes are horrible.

It's just that every single FUCKING time I see a thread criticizing the Rune system you always get that one cocksucker coming in with some BS: "But Guys! Smurfs would abuse this and ruin the game! No evidence! Just blind speculation! Don't fix the system!"

Avios18 votes

Sadly seems like a blind hatred for Smurfs has caused any logic or common sense to fall :P

Your previous post seems to suggest "legitimate new players" outnumber smurfs 10 to 1.

Do you have any EVIDENCE to support your claim?

Lauchmelder2 votes

I'd like to see actual evidence of the apparent smurf infestation as well.

I won't get it though, because it's a minor issue.

9 X1 votes

Smurfing affects the integrity of the game, not a minor issue.

Lauchmelder3 votes

It affects such a small portion of all games that it's a null factor.

And no, those "diamond smurfs" in bronze 5 are not diamonds in most cases.

9 X1 votes

It affects such a huge portion of all games that it's the factor.

And no, those "diamond smurfs" in Bronze 5 are not diamonds, in most cases they're actually Top 10 Challenjours.

I don't recall that excuse. I always thought it was the "It's broken, why fix it?" scheme Riot always does, running it into the ground for three years before finally deciding to scrap the entire thing and go from scratch. In that sense, Runes have actually had a good run, it's been well more than 3 years of anguish, somehow.

I was with you up to this point. Just because someone has more time to play video games than someone else that they use to impact their game faster and more efficiently than another does not mean they have less responsibilities. Ive been playing league for 5 or so years in addition to many other games that take time and farming. WIth my job and my child and i have almost every rune and every rune page.

I have other things to do, sure, but those things are not an excuse or liability to not have this or that, or be good or bad at a game.

bro, smurfs don't need runes/masteries to destroy the enemy team once, they play with newbies... ^__^

Why have runes in the first place? Yea it gives a little diversity but it opens up new ways to break a champion.

Avios12 votes

I don't find Runes as much of a problem, as they don't really give much breaking power (other than maybe that sweet sweet 20+ Magic penetration...), especially when compared to Masteries in general, being able to increase damage by somewhere around 26% last I heard. (I know comparing apples to oranges so-to-speak, but I believe Runes, if want to be kept, just need to be more available to everyone, which will allow the tankiers and the squishiers alike to have a mostly fair straw grab on what to buy).

Targon7 votes

I recently spent IP to upgrade some of my tier 2 runes to tier 3 runes. For 6000 IP I was able to get 2AP and about 1.5 more magic penetration.

Feels good to have all rune pages with all runes sitting on my account.[slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

Edit: Also 70K IP.

Vesemir6 votes

Downvote me all you want! Laughs in 70K IP and full runes*[slayer-jinx-wink]*

Velzard of Koz5 votes

Laughs in I have life, schools, exams and every now and then finals, house to clean, food to shop, job to do leaving one with hardly 3 hourd per day with healthy sleep. I can grind, but any same type of NEW player should basically fuck off because they don't give enough time to the game to deserve enter the competetive stage properly sooner?

Also it's easier to buy runes when yu already know what to buy. Imagine all the IP lost to runes one will never use just because it looked like good idea back then to new player.

DarkRitual6 votes

But... those Time Spent Dead and Energy Regen Runes will be useful eventually, right?

PaladinNO5 votes

I sure hope they will, because I got the 3x Revival Quints and 9x Scaling Energy Regen seals. ^^

Though I bought them fully aware of their uselessness. Just wanted something to waste some IP on.

Vesemir1 votes

i play this game for 7 years. I played 3 poro king today. 2 poro king yesterday. I rarely play nore than 4 games a day. So come again?

Anidan6 votes

A lot of people don't even get that many games per day. They might get that per week. You shouldn't be justifying an unnecessary grind gate just because you got through it, just like I wouldn't. I can make a new Steam account, download DotA2 and be on equal footing with every other player in that game right now. If I do the same in League then I still have to 1) level for masteries, 2) grind for T3 runes (eventually, because T2, while wonderfully cheap, simply aren't as good), and 3) grind for champions.

That's 3 grinds right out of the gate. Two of which are required (the champions can be hand-waved by 'you're not going to use all of them anyway' which is cop-out if I've ever heard one) to be anywhere near competitive. And that's ignoring that practice is its own grind.

Logan26051 votes

Yeah but unlike Dota 2 Leage is fun.

Anidan1 votes

What does that have to do with anything I said..? I'm not saying "EVERYONE SHOULD GO PLAY DOTA2 INSTEAD" because like everything else to do with games that's incredibly subjective. Besides, I find DotA2 funner myself. You don't have to play it or enjoy it as much, but DotA2 does some things that League could learn from: Not forcing new players into 3 separate grind-gates is a good thing they do. You're on equal footing from the get-go, and you just need to hit level 20 for ranked play (if that's even something you care to do - a lot of people don't, just like in League).

Logan26051 votes

Maybe but some grind is important. Runes are excessive yes. I don't feel like you should have everything available to you right out of the gate either, the feeling of progression when buying a new rune page or champion is a good thing, and one that keeps players coming back to league for more and more. You get rid of that, you shorten the games longevity for some players.

Anidan1 votes

I've never been satisfied at having to buy a new rune page or champion. The more I did it when I played, the more I wondered why I had to buy and grind out something that should be available in the first place. It was tedious. My brother doesn't like it either. My friends don't like it. If they want to try a champion they have to grind for it, wait for their free week, or open their wallets. This is in a game where knowing how champions' kit works is kind of paramount for playing competitively so you aren't taken by surprise due to a champion's abilities. If they want to try some off-meta rune set-up they have to grind out those runes for no real reason besides more grind-gating. And a rune page, because there's no guarantee you can try out the champion you had planned to for your rune set-up so you need to have your other rune pages for general usage on other champions.

This is a game and some grind is necessary, yes: but this is also a competitive game and so you should have everything the other team potentially has so you're on an even playing field.

Cry more. Rune Pages and Rune prices are fine. I'm so tired of people whining, whining, and more whining about something that costs IN GAME MONEY (not real money) in a game they play 100% FOR FREE.

You want to do something about it? play more. Want to do more about it? buy IP boosts

Don't want to spend real money AND don't want to invest that much time? Well, here is your wake up call: The world doesn't owe you anything, and neither does Riot. You don't deserve anything just for being a random player. Play by the rules or play something else. But for the 10000000x time: stop whining.

PureSilvrr4 votes

Many people play this game casually, like 1 or 2 matches a day, or even 1 or 2 a week, for those people who have other obligations and cant pour 6 hours a day into the game, it is really hard to get runepages, and you also still have to get champions too and many of the meta ones cost 4800 ip or more. tl;dr you cant just say shut up and play more if you dont know a what situation people are in

Parallelity4 votes

They do it so you'll spent rp on champions so you can save your ip for runes. Rito is a business and has people they need to pay to keep league up and running. Even if it means abusing some people's impatience.

Tangy Citrus3 votes

I think its meant to be expensive to force new players to stay in normal draft/blind pick longer instead of rushing into ranked and screwing up everyones elo. Not that they dont do that anyways.

Fegone1 votes

That could very well be a valid reason for the price. Justified too.

I have all the runes and the champions. I did it.

What you are asking is to take away the one thing veteran players have worked for with no compensation.

As a veteran player the only two things I have is a corki ufo skin and a King Rammus skin.
I don't have any veteran summoner icon.

Why should you get something special over me who worked for it?

Honest question. No, really.

Avios18 votes

I'm a veteran player myself, and although I understand your viewpoint, I don't agree with it.

The thing that I know, as a Veteran player, is that I have Summoner Icons for compensation for playing longer, and I am fine with that. (Season 2 bronze FTW)

However, I believe that just because I played longer, I shouldn't have the upper hand because I have more runes, which would equal more flexibility with my rune pages.

The way I see it, playing the game for longer than most has granted me a larger understanding within the universe of League of Legends, allowing me to memorize all of the champion's abilities overtime, developing niche strats versus certain champs, etc.

I shouldn't be rewarded for grinding, I don't want a WoW style game, I came for a LoL style game.

Anyways, thank you for your input, its highly appreciated, especially since this is my first thread that has actually had some publicity (Other than M&G, I don't count those posts :P).
