Why Autofill is the most flawed design in any competitive game.

Honestly, I don't see how autofill is at all "Helpful" too queue health. Yea, it makes matchmaking a bit faster, but at what cost? How many times have you gotten into a game, only for the first thing someone says is "Auto filled, swap?" Or "Im not playing support"? It is the most pathetic thing Riot could have implemented too cut down queue times. Why should I practice X champion in norms for Y amount of time, only to be autofilled in ranked, and forced to dodge, or play something im not good at? Something, ANYONE isnt good at. I would rather wait 10 minutes, and get a team where everyone is able too play their best, than a 3 minute queue where someone cries about auto fill and trolls. Auto fill should have a Optional Toggle. where, if longer queue times bother you, you can Opt in too auto fill. Im sure some people prefer these lower queue times, but it would not be hard to make Everyone happy here. Just make it a toggle, and queues would still be as short, maybe a minute longer.

EDIT: It seems everyone commenting thinks I am new too the game, and did not play when the que times were gigantic. I've played since Season 3. I'm fully aware of how the old Que timers were. Also, on another note, I am NOT Saying too remove Autofill. I understand its purpose, and what it does. I'm saying, making it a toggle would fix the low support issue, as well as the "I got auto filled support. Going X champion no matter what lmao". 1 tricks, and 2 tricks do exist. Me being one of them. When I get auto filled support, I DO pick a support, and try to win it, but heres the thing. I suck at support, and end up handicapping my team. By having a toggle, those who play every role could toggle it to always be on, and prevent a good portion of one trick ponies from getting auto filled.

Experience with Fill from last year tells us that no, Auto Fill has to be all or none, it can't be optional.

When the new champion select came out there were a decent number of people who put Fill or Support secondary. Then some people didn't like how the system gave them Support about 80% of the time (for reference, Fill in Blind Pick gets you Support about 35% of the time), so they quit putting it. That pushed the others who still had Fill or Support secondary into being even more likely to get Support, they found it too often and they bailed out. So on and so forth until you basically couldn't put Fill or Support secondary unless you were a Support main.

The same thing would happen if Auto Fill was optional.

If you decided to make septate queues for those turning off Auto Fill, they'd easily take half an hour or more to find a lobby, since Support mains are already Auto Fill protected and wouldn't need to opt out.

If Riot hadn't made their lobby filling system as naive as they did, putting a cap on the number of games you could get as Support secondary or Support from fill, then we likely wouldn't have Auto Fill today. But alas, the damage is done now. Those who were willing to do that have moved on to other roles or play Blind Pick, where Fill still is effectively random.

״a bit longer" every time people say that and it leaves me scratching my head how clueless people are. You know what's bottlenecking? Autofill is necessary for que's health, nobody wants to wait 20 minutes just because "Bronze 5 Junior" cant play 1 game of support every 5 or so matches. And yes, que times were THAT long before autofill was introduced.

Ahh, i've experienced that issue and many others people have of 15+ minutes que times when they picked popular positions like mid and junge, it was practically a meme at some point.

Also you dont need to be a rocket scientist with "hard facts" to understand yes, there will be bottlenecking as the support player population is always relatively smaller than any other role, making it so you wait much longer to get one every time, this is basic logic. Also if anything dynamic que made que times faster seeing as now ranked is split into 2 different modes.

It would be true about secondary support players if it was actually secondary. The problem was, because no one playe support, if you picked secondary support you'd get it 90% of the time, it made people sick of it and they stopped queing for supp all together. There were a lot of complains about it at the time. Dynamic que might have had more levers to pull to match the right people but it was unified for all players, now it's split, thats a lot worse than simply grouping premades together.

Que times were perfectly fine before autofill. Thats because we didn't have two separate ques splitting the playerbase. Autofill only exists in its current state to keep Flex que alive.

Im fully aware that it was, I never said it wasnt. I also never said too remove Auto fill. I said too make it a toggle, that way those who can play all the roles well, can have it enabled, where as people like me who 1 or 2 trick, would have it disabled. All it does, is lead too people taking champ select hostage, and threatening too int, or people having too play something they suck ass at, which leads too a loss.

I personally think pickorder was worse. Would get uneven distribution of role mains, would get dicked over to fill in back to back to back games. Ever have 4 mid main only on your team? It aint much fun.
