"4 Fun" smurfing needs to be Perma-Bannable.

Misses Old Talon··84 votes·19,040 views

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. People who smurf, in ANY elo, and actively play a champion for the first time, play their main and then refuse to end until the games thrown, ETC, needs to be permanently bannable for both the smurf, and the main account. Why is it that someone can completely ruin my ranked experience, take a game hostage for 40+ minutes, and then cause me to lose because "I got bored" or "Im having fun!", and then literally receive no punishment at all because they still have the main account (and probably other smurfs..) to fall back on is so hilariously pathetic. It's basically saying "are you not a streamer, and want to ruin other peoples games? Smurf and int!" (This ended up not being short, or sweet..)

Always kinda feel bad for the random players in those "WE PUT A BRONZE IN A PLAT RANKED GAME TO SEE IF HE DESERVES PLAT!!1!" or "I'M A CHALLENGER SMURFING IN A SILVER GAME BUT IM NOT GOING TO BUY ITEMS AND SEE IF I CAN WIN" kinds of videos. Like, you're ruining a game for potentially 9 other people. Kind of a dick move.

More like a smurf dick move. Get it? Smurf...dick...

OK, I'm gone, I'm gone :D :D

They probably just read the title and downvoted, I was about to do so but then read the OP.

I don't have any issue with the premise of smurfing, but trolling while smurf is definitely something that should be banworthy.

Why isn't normal smurfing a problem? Would you be happy if you lost a game to your insert desired rank promos because someone on the enemy team was smurfing just for their sick kicks?

iPooUnicorns6 votes

As long as they aren't being verbally toxic, or intentionally trying to lose the game, it really isn't an issue. If they are at a lower MMR than they belong, it will even out relatively quickly. If I lose a promo match, I lose a promo match; and I would much rather lose a promo because an opponent hard carried over losing a promo because of a teammate performing bad enough to make the game unwinnable.

DunkmasterDennis2 votes

yea but I wouldn't want to lose my silver promos just cuz some retard diamond player wanted to smurf/ play on the enemy team and completely demolish whoever he lanes against

Kubuś4 votes

I think smurfing itself can be very useful as a way to main another role or champion especially because norms is not a serious way to get better. Playing in a lower division will, of course, mean you are generally a better player and while that in itself isn't very fair, if the smurf is genuinely trying to win or is learning to become better at something new, I don't have a problem with it.

Stupafly14 votes

They need to have a trolls island queue. Send all the toxic people to queue together there until they put in their time, I'm sure they will have fun together.

Less banning, more exile.

I don't understand why people feel the need to smurf?

"Bruh Diamond is tough, gotta blow off steam crushing silvers"

Uh, what?

Lebron James: "Bruh the NBA is tough, gotta blow off steam crushing middle school teams" Mayweather: "Bruh UFC is tough, gotta blow off steam crushing this elderly guy"

No. That's not even an argument. If you wanna go blow off steam play a normal game or get on the PBE where everyone has 200 ping and don't care if they win anyway. Don't ruin other players experience just because you're too worn out from your ELO.

"I'm trying a new build"

If you're diamond you could get a pentakill vs. Silvers as AP Yi. And, you could try it on normals or PBE. What the fuck.

"It's fun crushing Silvers"

Just how? See point one. Pros don't get entertainemtn out of bullying noobs. You're just an asshole.

TBH streamers and youtubers that are caught using smurfs should just have their accounts blacklisted like Tyler1 was. No new accounts for you. They catch you using one and it's gone. Fuck the streamers that have 5 challenger accounts. Nobody gives a shit if you have 5 challenger accounts. That just means you crushed a disgusting amount of worse players than yourself for no reason other than to say "wow look at me im so good i can get 5 accounts into challenger because clearly one challenger account wasnt impressive enough"

MasterDClone1 votes

tf blade held rank 2 and 4 at the end of the season which is quite impressive. secondly i play on my smurf all the time to play new champs, as a onetrick ive gotten to the point where if i play any other champ in my elo i lose so i want to play a serious game with champs that i dont regularly play.

If he has an account thats rank 2, why the fuck do you need an account that rank 4? You're already rank 2!? Clearly you're good, because youre rank 2, so how is rank 4 more impressive? You did the same thing you did on your other account, but slightly worse. Woo hoo. Good for you. In actuality you're just taking up an extra slot from some poor master player that just wants challenger but really challenger is like 10 different people with 6 accounts each.

How about instead of playing new champs on a smurf or playing champs you don't usually play on a smurf, you actually just go into normals and learn the mechanics of the champ over 20 games instead? ugh.

MasterDClone1 votes

Because it takes skill to level up 2 accounts that high in challenger and if you have an account only 2 levels below your main it isn't even a smurf at that point, i would love the chance to take up slots 1,2,3 in challenger that would just fuck with my competition. And those master players just have to get better than the 10 taking up challenger so that you have a spot. Honetly i dont see the problem. As for your last bit even when you play norms you go against similar skill levels and for one tricks that is a pain in the ass. The other two reason people have smurfs is if they get a ban on their main or they want to play with their friends at a lower level. Now here comes the boosting thing and i agree for solo/duo but for flex it's just a means to have some fun with friends in a serious enviornment

Last year I had a game completely ruined by a Gangplank smurf....

He died once in the first 3 mins, then started straight inting. By 20 min games end, he was 0/18 and had done 1600 damage TOTAL! The only things he typed were: "GG" "You don't deserve me" "and "IDC my main account is Plat bronze trash"

I saved the post game screen and sent an E-mail to Riot. They said "herp derp JUST REPORT" IE nothing.

Then I posted a discussion here warning people about this guy; It was taken down within MINUTES and I got a strike on my boards account for "player shaming"...

So ruining games for people on a disposable account is A-OK and will never be punished, But attempting to take any sort of action against such players will risk getting your own account banned...

[zombie-brand-facepalm]

This will be what eventually kills the game...

There is no way for riot to punish the main account. You want riot to kindly ask: "Yo btw what's your main account?". Because IP-adresses are way too unreliable to be used for this purpose. For example students in dormitories all people share the same IP. So how can you tell who's smurf that account is with hundreds of players playing with the same IP. (Not to mention that it doesn't take 2 minutes to set up a proxy and be online with a different ip) You want all accounts be verified with SMS?, but there are websites out there where you can generate a fake phone number to receive and verify an SMS for free.

You can only share IP if you're on the same network, and that's not a problem. There is no need to verify accounts with SMS or anything. Simply ban the IP address the smurf account is connected from, and every other IP address that smurf account has ever been accessed from. You might think this would cause a problem for every League player on the network, and you'd be right... until the system admin resets the router, and it gets a new IP address from the ISP. Add a message that tells everyone attempting to login with a banned IP address exactly WHY that IP address is banned and the other League players in the building will solve your smurfing problem.

Glory972 votes

So you have a student dormitory, and because one idiot smurfs, 100 acounts will be banned as protective measure, because riot can exactly know which one these account is the main account of the smurf. And the you want the administrator change the ip-adress because the of a stupid video game, I bet that 90% of administrator for student dormitories won't reset the router and change the IP-adress.

Not to mention that we havent even talked about, how to identify smurfs in a game. A system that judges based on performance, and then normal players are forced to int in the third game, after performing very well in 2 previous games, to prevent being recognised and perma-banned because of the possibility that they are smurfing?

Phone number id.

Not perfect, can be spoofed, but requires hardware to do so from my limited minute of research. Regardless, a unique id in some fashion solves this issue- I think phone number is the best bet.

Master account with the unique id, all game accounts must be attached to this master account. Now you control smurfing, bought accounts, trolls, everything. Reputation is established, if you fuck around on one account you put all of your accounts in danger. You can't simply start a new one and go back to trolling.

Tegash6 votes

Sadly, smurfing makes Riot a lot of money. People buying skins and champions at level 1 is lucrative.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

That's not why Riot bans accounts. Riot bans accounts because they violate the rules.

Tegash1 votes

Uh, granted? That wasn't in contention.

All I'm saying is that Riot will not act against smurfs or change their TOS around them, even though they make the game inaccessible for new players, because smurfs bring in money.

DuskDaUmbreon5 votes

Lmao what. Who actually spends money on a smurf? Or any account they intend to troll on?

Tegash1 votes

The 40/3/0 PROJECT Yi who refuses to let the game end simply so he can crush the smurf on the enemy team and force them into surrendering? IDK?

There have always been people who will pay money simply for the opportunity to spit on inexperienced or unskilled players. League isn't the first game this has happened in.

Pika Fox5 votes

This has nothing to do with smurfing. This is reportable either way, smurfing or not.

HalcyonDweller3 votes

It has everything to do with smurfing. People who get punished on alt-accounts face no actual tangible consequences for their actions.

Pika Fox1 votes

And theres no real way to ever ensure they could. Its not like you require your SSID to play LoL in NA/EU.

HalcyonDweller3 votes

that's not necessarily true. Riot already has ways of identifying when two accounts belong to the same player. In addition to that, there are even more tricks that could be used to identify players, including assigning unique IDs at endpoints, so you can tell if a client is the same even if it uses a different IP address or other common methods of changing connection identity.

Pika Fox1 votes

All of which are rarely, if ever, used because it either becomes too restrictive for basic play (requiring a bank issued credit card/phone number would drastically cut out the young and poor player base), or is easily spoofed or creates falsd positives (assuming IP = person)

HalcyonDweller2 votes

Incorrect. And I never mentioned bank cards or SMS verification.

It's not as if they just rely on one thing like IP to figure out if its the same person. There are a whole host of other methods that can be used in conjunction with one another to avoid false positives.

Why are you so against the idea of connecting accounts?

Pika Fox1 votes

Almost all of which are either a pain in the ass or easy to spoof.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

Individually maybe, but all at once? Nah I doubt it. That would only be possible in the rarest of cases.

You never answered the question. Why are you so against the idea of connecting accounts?

Pika Fox1 votes

Realistically its too much effort to solve a small problem where resources could be better allocated with a large chance of the system backfiring. The best solution would likely be the ability to create multiple accounts officially for free upon hitting level 30 or so that start out at 30 and are tied to the main account. Wouldnt solve many abuse cases, but might hurt the RMT market enough to make selling accounts not a good option for them and kill it off that way (at the very least theyd have to raise their pricing which would deter people away, so now to smurf and abuse people youd need to make a brand new account level 1)

HalcyonDweller1 votes

I can think of ways to automate at least 80% of the methods I'm thinking of right now.

And the exact same reasoning you use there could be used to explain why players won't go around it successfully. It's too much work. When Riot has access to every bit of information you put into the game and every thing you do with the game can be tracked, it simply takes way too much effort for the layman to plug every leak and avoid every obstacle. They would get caught anyways and all that effort would have been for naught. It will only take a few failed attempts for a troll / toxic player to completely give up on trying to play the game.

Pika Fox1 votes

Riot cant save or use said information, its now illegal in many areas they operate. So no, it wouldnt work.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

You still haven't explained why you personally are against the idea of connecting accounts.

And how exactly would that be illegal? It's not illegal to do things like track IP addresses of clients, and certainly not if that is something that said clients must agree to in order to use the service. And the other sorts of information I imagine would be saved are less controversial than IP addresses.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

Wrong. And stop shifting the goalposts. You're better than that.

Our entire conversation so far is worthless. The previous chain of discussion is just you changing the subject every time I corner one of your points.

DuskDaUmbreon4 votes

The issue is not whether or not the account gets punished, as it clearly does.

The issue is that their main account isn't punished, so there's effectively no real punishment done.

Riot is a global company and needs to abide by all the rules and standards. Its unlikely they would do in NA what is illegal in the EU, too much conflict.

Literally no conflict.

EU players play on EU servers, with clients downloaded from the EU version of the league of legends website. It is simple enough to provide a plugable section of code that records the necessary information, that can simply be excluded from the EU client program that players download and install.

And i did to state why im against your suggestions. Too much effort not enough reward, terrible allocation of resources for non issues best solved with other applications (that wouldnt actually violate the law). My suggestion (which does link accounts if you bothered to read) is a far better solution than yours, even with its shortcomings.

That's not why you are against my suggestions. Those are counterpoints to the suggestions but they don't explain why you care so much about this.

You're arguing quite passionately, you have refused to acknowledge my points, and you have repeatedly tried to bash my idea by shifting the goalposts every time I manage to pin down a point you have made against them.

So whats the sitch? Why are you so up in arms about this?

You have made no formal suggestion. You implied that my suggestion involved things which I never said it did, and then you bashed those things - essentially strawmanning me. But you didn't actually propose anything yourself in our discussion chain.

Pika Fox1 votes

I have no horse in the race, its just your arguments and points are bad and have no merit in how a company would ever work or function. The problem youre trying to solve is a near non issue, affecting nearly no one. Youre attempting to solve it with mass data collecting, which is now made illegal in certain countries, saying riot would be able to do it easily for just NA (no they wouldnt, requires too much overhead to continue to try and keep everything separate and follow differing laws, a problem they already strove to fix with karthus rework and mass art unification a while back, a global company doesnt want to deal with individual laws like this, especially for little payoff). There are far easier solutions to the problem, that cost less resources and less time to implement, and dont potentially violate future laws going forward.

And i already proposed a suggestion. You not taking 10 seconds to read is your own problem, not mine. I stated the easier solution would be riot allowing level 30+ accounts to make smurfs, either free or with RP, that start at level 30, thus killing the RMT market or driving up the prices and killing the issues. No data collecting or anything else involved.

Well, forgive me for not seeing it. Maybe it would take less time if you would simply type it out here rather than keep arguing about whether or not you did. If typing it is too much of a bother you can always link it. It's not that hard to quote a comment, even your own.

Pika Fox1 votes

That was literally the condensed version of my proposal, linking the original wouldnt garner more information.

And im arguing with you because you proposed an idea and claimed it to be good and the general premise of the OP and thread is that its an easy issue to solve and riot should have done something about it by now. My comments have been statements saying no, its not an easy fix and no, they arent going to do any of these suggestions. Even my suggestion, while a better and more likely suggestion for them to implement, is unlikely as it may inhibit their monetary gains. Riot is a company, and while theyre really good and give us a lot of good value for our money, they still arent a charity.

I like this quite a lot actually. Carry on. In the future it might help to say, "here is my solution: .... " in it's own paragraph, because once a conversation gets combative, it's not easy to get the other person to read things in-depth.

I've stated this in the past...

If YOU are having fun at the expense of proper play while ruining the fun for everyone else on your team, and possibly in the whole game? I mean... correct me if I'm wrong; but pretty sure that is the literal definition of being a game troll... :/

HalcyonDweller2 votes

I think that's mostly the case, and in the case of the original poster's example it's absolutely true.

But with this comment I'm referring to both cases where people smurf and troll AND when people simply smurf so they can stomp on weaker players. The reason for referring to both is that I believe that Remakoro here is referring to the case of smurfing to stomp on weaker players.
