Help me understand Illaoi 6.11 patch

Q increases all tentacle damage rather than tentacle ratio.

Q - Tentacle Smash REMOVEDTHRASHING No longer increases Tentacle damage by 0/0.1/0.2/0.3/0.4 bonus attack damage NEWSMASHING Now increases all Tentacle damage by 10/15/20/25/30%

This doesn't make sense to me. Can someone break this down, please.

It's more damage unless you're building a completely obscene amount of AD. Here's what the tentacle damage looks like at rank 5 Q, level 9:

Old Q: 90 + (160% AD) New Q: 117 + (156% AD)

The new Q is stronger unless you somehow have 675 AD at level 9.

For every level after level 9, you'd need 75 more AD than the previous level to make old Q match the new one. At level 18, this culminates in:

Old Q: 180 + (160% AD) New Q: 234 + (156% AD)

At this point, you would need 1,350 AD for the old Q to break even with the new one.

it was a buff that she needed

i actually dont know the exact numbers, but tentacles like all abilities should have dealt base damage and have an ad ratio.

instead of increasing the ad ratio on the tentacles, her q now increases their total damage by a %. means she deals more damage when shes not building ad.

means its easier for her to rush defensive items instead of being forced to build ad items first.

More damage but scales worse if you build pure AD

The reduction in scaling is almost microscopic and also only occurs from level 9 onwards, you actually have even or better scaling before that point. You would have to go out of your way with an intentionally poor build in order to get to any point in the game where you'd deal more damage with the old system and I'm pretty sure there simply are not enough sources for AD in the game for a level 18 Illaoi to get to the point where she'd deal more damage under the old system than the new.

Not really familiar with the base dmg scaling on her tentacles. My point that it helps Tank illaoi more than dmg still stands though.

Thanks for the more detailed update though.

I just don't want people to think that Riot was nerfing their favorite Illaoi build or that they somehow don't like Illaoi because they are somehow compensating a buff with a nerf somewhere else, because Illaoi doesn't realistically suffer from this anywhere.

Fair enough

She would need 1350 AD to break even.

  • Illaoi has 145 base AD at level 18
  • Six 75 AD items grants 450 more AD
  • 30 AD from Elixir of Wrath
  • 10 more AD from the Natural Talent mastery
  • 52 AD from a full Scaling AD rune page
  • 40 AD from full-power Hand of Baron buff
  • +36% AD from 3x Infernal Drake + Elder Dragon

This only adds up to 989 AD, still 361 AD short of breaking even. To get that remaining AD, you'd need a Janna with like ~2654 AP or something to use E on you.

Damn. You sir, have too much time on your hands. And I am saying that while on my 1 1/2 hour bus ride I take twice a day.

I appreciate everybody else's answer, but this wins top vote for me. You, while explaining absolutely nothing... made the most sense lol

short version: it's more damage

Quepha1 votes

Long version: The old system increased the damage Illaoi gained from AD (including her base AD) If she had 100 AD, she would get 0/10/20/30/40 bonus damage depending on the number of points in Q.

The new system increases total damage by a 10/15/20/25/30%, which includes both the base damage AND the damage she gains from AD.

The damage from her tentacles without any points in Q in both systems is 10xlevel + 1.2xAD The new AD ratio is now 1.2 x 1.1, 1.2 x 1.15, etc. which comes out to 1.32 AD, 1.38 AD, 1.44 AD, 1.50 AD, and 1.56 AD That's a higher ratio at ranks 1-3, the same ratio at 4 rank 4, and a slightly smaller ratio at rank 5 (0.04 AD less)

The base changes from 10-180 to (10-180)x1.1, (10-180)x1.15, etc. which results in 11-198, 11.5-207, 12-216, 12.5-225, 13-234.

At level 9 when Illaoi maxes her Q, she has 117 base + 1.56 AD vs. the old system where she had 90 base + 1.6 AD. If she is below 675 AD, then she would be dealing more damage under the new system. At any other stage of the game (before 9 at lower ranks of Q or above 9 when her base damage increases) the new system is favored even harder.

The damage boost especially benefits if you build tankier rather than focusing on damage, but even the most damage focused builds for Illaoi would be gaining damage.

Illaoi's tentacles deal base damage (10-180) based on her level plus an extra amount equal to 120% of her total AD. This is without any ranks in her Q.

In previous patches, leveling up Q added an additional ratio equal to 0/10/20/30/40% of her bonus AD. So the new formula for the damage at, say, rank 4, with Illlaoi at level 8, would be 80 (+120% total AD) (+30% bonus AD).

In 6.11, this extra ratio has been replaced. Leveling up Q now simply magnifies all tentacle damage by 10/15/20/25/30%. The same formula (rank 4 Q at champ level 8) now becomes [80 (+120% total AD)] x 1.25, or 100 (+ 150% total AD). Overall, it's an increase to her damage.
