I thought assassins were supposed to be high risk/high reward??

Why does Zed get to be super safe with better laning phase/wave clear than most mages??? Also... no resources?

Hes also super safe when he goes to burst someone...

Riot Games choosing "LCS BIG PLAYS" over game balance.. GG. Zed is by far the #1 picked mid laner in the game.

It's probably because he's an assassin and not a mage. Seriously out of all the assassins to complain about Zed is not one of them, just build a Zhonya's Hourglass and laugh at him when he tries to ult you.

Gorsz30 votes

Hourglass costs 3100 gold, and hourglass counters 99% of ultimates.

Um... the point is assassins are not supposed to have super safe/easy laning phases.

Dunno about this. Ahri Leblanc Rengar Talon Zed Pantheon ... seems like there are a bunch of assassins with safe laning phases. Assassins tend to be mobile and good in 1v1 situations, that doesn't sound like a recipe for bad laning.

Gorsz22 votes

Leblanc cannot heavy push while being super safe, and she was heavy nerfed, also uses mana Ahri- ok, but I see her more of a mage honestly, and she uses mana Rengar - not super safe and has no wave clear Talon - not super safe and has pretty weak wave clear until later, uses mana Pantheon - not super safe, uses mana

Zed = super safe, wave clear, no mana resource.

You're focused a lot on wave clear, but the post I quoted didn't mention wave clear. It mentioned safe and easy laning phases. If you're dying in lane on any of these champions, you're really doing it wrong.

I think you're probably letting Zed have control of the lane improperly. His wave clear should require him to burn W, which takes away his safety. Put more pressure on him with autos and he'll have to play more defensively in lane.

Gorsz7 votes

I dont care what your post mentioned.

An assassins shoudlnt have poke, wave clear, burst, super mobility and safety.

There is a reason everyone and their mother is playing Zed. In mid lane, position where 70 champions can go, Zed is picked more than everyone BY far.

In my opinion Rengar is supersafe when I play him. Whenever I am in severe danger I simply pop my ult and walk away. Also, Zed can go OOE VERY QUICKLY, when I play Zed i'd much rather have him use mana sometimes over energy just because I always feel OOE without blue buff.

Kowe The Ewok12 votes

4 of these are mana heavy. Only one of them has a compareable non-ultimate escape. None does as much AoE as him. Rengar lacks poke. Pantheorn rengar and Talon only can jump in - but lack an escape (safety)

Zed is overall a safer pick with higher range, lower cooldown who is not limited by mana who can jump more than a whole screenwide back into safety.

He's basically a LeBlanc Upgrade with AoE damage, which is not limited by mana, can wreck towers and actually gains significant damage from building a lifesteal item.

Talons laning phase safe ._. Rake is costly and does some terrible damage early on... Has no real escape besides flash...idk...

3100 gold for completely removing one champion on the enemy team from being a threat is pretty freaking strong.

Also, ADs can build QSS/mercurial, and do the exact same thing.

If a zed is still a threat without his ult, he is so ungodly fed the game is already over.

No one else in the entire game is as hard countered by a single item as Zed is by Hourglass and QSS/Mercurial.

Gorsz2 votes

Hourglass stops just about every ultimate, so what exactly is your point?

Also if Zed is so "hard countered" so easily. Why is he the #1 go-to mid laner in the game? Also dont pros still play Zed? Why?

Zed is the go to mid laner (as an assassin) because one by one, Riot is ripping the throat out of assassins, and he is the last one left standing.

The difference with Zed is that most other champions can perform their job without their ultimate. Go ahead, try and assassinate someon as a non-fed Zed without your ultimate. i DARE you. Because it isnt possible. Meanwhile, Fizz, Ahri, LB (20 cooldown, hourglass doesnt count that or Ahri's ult), Talon, all capable of killing without their ult (talon has the hardest time of those listed, but he doesnt get hard countered by hourglasses active, its a soft counter, unlike Zed).

The reason Hourglass countering Zed is a bigger deal than other champions is for a couple reasons: 1) you dont need to be quick or good with the active to avoid 2/3 of his burst. 2) It can stop his ult, and his entire combo because of the cast time on his ult.

Now, compare that to Fizz, Ahri, LB, or Talon (or even Akali). Sure you could Hourglass something of their combo. But Talon does his so fast you would need almost beyond human reaction time to use it against a competent Talon. Ahri does 2/3 of her burst while your charmed and incapable of using the active, as well as being able to save her second and third ult charge for when hourglass ends, meaning you only negate 1/3 of her ult. LBs ult is on a 20 second cooldown, so hourglass is useless against her in terms of avoiding damage.

Now check the cooldown of QSS. Now check the cooldown of Zed's ultimate. Now consider that it help 0 bit against Zed's poke - and that Zed can basically build a brutalizer for the cost.

You don't beat him cause you survive him, but you fall behind since he is a whole midgame item ahead when it comes to lane harass. He will outtrade you.

120/100/80 vs. 90 seconds.

What is your point? At level 16, he has a 10 second window to use his ult on you if you have QSS/mercurial. That is so small it might as well not exist.

And if as an ADC youre getting poked by Zed, something is seriously wrong with you.

If 5 people have to build Zhonyas to ensure not to get instagibbed something is horribly wrong.

But the Zed abuse fanboy base on these forums is strong. They'll downvote and act like a pidgeon on a chess-board to avoid justified balancing changes.

redniwediS3 votes

Zhonyas is for the AP carry. The AD carry has a support to assist with peeling, where as the other members should either be tanky or have their own survival mechanisms. Being "instagibbed" by Zed either means someone fed him or you got caught out.

If you have proper team positioning and no one feeds the Zed there will be no instagibbing.

Gorsz2 votes

lol...

Zed is a super safe farmer who is also a super safe split pusher. You dont have to be "fed" you just need gold from CS to insta gib people.

redniwediS5 votes

Did I say or? No, I said and.

A fed Zed can get around good team positioning, and good team positioning can completely counter a non-fed Zed.

Gorsz2 votes

So it requires an entire team to counter a non-fed Zed.

Ok..

Sorry going by your words. "good team positioning".

redniwediS7 votes

Really? If you're squishy and do not buy a defensive item like Zhonya's you will need someone with CC to peel for you. If you're off by yourself with no one to help you then you deserve to die to an assassin.

Stop twisting my words to fit your idea that Zed is op.

Grunt6661 votes

I always wonder why it is that people who defend assasins with this line of thinking refuse to acknowledge that same assasin never buys a defensive item, but ye they never worry about being instagibbed because they always have some lame cheap ass gimick to bail them out when they get outplayed caught etc...

GG balance and the retards who abuse it.

redniwediS2 votes

I'll never understand people who attack a role for doing what it was designed to do. Why shouldn't a high mobility, high damage role that is supposed to build pure damage do exactly that?

What's next, complaining about tanks being too tanky? If you won't complain about that don't complain about a mobile damage dealer being mobile.

QSS only delivers an active. Considering that your enemies have a Zed they're most likely an AD heavy team which reduces the use of MR, at the sametime QSS grants poor stats for the mony. At the same time it also does not help anythign against his poke and sets you behind in trades.

For banshees: NOBODY can affored this item at level 6. Yet Zed can already 1combo an enemy champion at this point. The earliest point of time where you can buy this item as a squish and NOT completely use your lane as a result is item Nr. 3

omg you act like zeds will still kill you with it no they wont. Just because they have a zed does not mean there isn't a ap top ot ap support. You just want to argue the fact that qss is not a good by. If you use it the moment deathmark is applied he can't kill you unless hes stupid fed. end of story. You dont buy the item to beat him but to survive him and get your items going.

see here is the problem with this game BAD players like you who can only manage ot press 3 buttons and if someone doesnt die after 3 buttons it is GG i cant do anything!

Pro tip zed is like pushing the highest AD ratings in the game if you qss his ult you have 1 less dmg item and pretty sure zed will auto you down easily EASILY if you managed to escape his ult dmg.

you are still using stupid analiogys. You act like anyone is gonna let zed AA you down and you can dodge his harass its easy. Not to mention QSS can build into dmg it gives huge AD, and if your AP then you build hourglass. if you can't handle zed because your too stupid to think on how to play vs him thats your fault. Everything you say about zed makes me think you allow him to do this to you. Sure zed can poke you can dodge, sure zed has mobility so does 90% of lol champions, If you survive zed you will have a better late game then him, he wont snowball and he will be much more manageable.

Cale0176 votes

Because to do the most damage he can, he has to telegraph where he's going to be after he uses his ult. Even if he ults into a carry, you can point everything you have where he's going to appear and while you might lose your carry to his damage, they're going to lose their fed Zed too. If you're laning against one, consider getting a Zhonya's Hourglass a bit earlier than you might otherwise on a champion you'd normally buy it on, and consider getting it even if you aren't using a champion who normally has it.

That or play Fizz. Nothing better than trollpolling out of a Zed ult.

Zed's lane phase isn't that strong and is pretty reliant on outplays. Make sure to auto him aggressively, even as someone like Lux.

Zed's energy is more restrictive than most mana bars.

I agree that Zed R is annoyingly safe.

Gorsz22 votes

You cannot be serious saying Zed's energy is more restrictive than most mana bars during laning phase.

And zed's lane phase IS strong. He has stupid wave clear, no mana, and is super safe from ganks. Which allows zed to super push with impunity.

SmokingPuffin10 votes

I didn't say "during laning phase", but in general Zed's energy bar is quite restrictive. Much harder to stay at full energy on him than say Lee Sin or Kennen.

If you don't let his shadow hit you with things, he will have gaping holes in his resource bar and have to cower under turret.

And zed's lane phase IS strong. He has stupid wave clear, no mana, and is super safe from ganks. Which allows zed to super push with impunity.

He's beatable 1v1 by most of the typical picks. Syndra crushes him. Ahri has much more kill potential. Orianna just ranks E and right clicks. Yasuo passive seems designed to beat Zed. Auto him more. Generally Zed loses most lanes, both sides playing correctly.

Zed spends a lot of many lanes last hitting with shurikens and staying a mile back from the minions.

Plenty of assassins are safe. The ones that aren't tend to be champions with mind bogglingly good ults and snowballing power like Akali and Kassadin.

If you just open up the champion menu and type "assassin", you'll see a ton of champions that are safe in lane. Assassins are inherently mobile champions, which is good for safety, and they tend to be both slippery and strong in 1v1 situations. Those are just the basic characteristics of the class, and they lend well towards being safe compared to say mages or marksmen.

Gorsz1 votes

Its not just about safety.. its about a dominant lane phase/pushing power + safety.

How many of those assassins can wave clear with safety?

Quite a few assassins wave clear safely. Off the top of my head: Ahri Fizz Leblanc Talon Zed

In general, assassins follow one of two play patterns: A. Good at killing opposing laner. Someone like Akali whose basic plan is to kill the opposing laner over and over. B. Good at roaming. Someone like Ahri who really enjoys showing up unexpected and collecting double kills in the bot lane.

Plan B requires good wave clear, so it's no surprise that assassins often have effective wave clear against opposing pushers.

Gorsz1 votes

Wrong.

Talon and fizz cannot wave clear safely.

Ahri is more of a mage than an assassin.

Leblanc received a huge nerf for being so dominant.

SmokingPuffin6 votes

Talon and fizz cannot wave clear safely.

Sure they can.

Fizz trollpoles the wave and dashes out using the front minion. How were you planning to counter that?

Talon's rake is among the best waveclear spells in the game. Usually it's possible to tag an opponent attempting to deny you waveclear with the rake, making counterattack difficult to impossible depending on opponent.

Ahri is more of a mage than an assassin.

Ahri was one of the big 4 assassins in the Ahri/Fizz/Zed/Kassadin season 3 meta and her rework soundly defeated the idea of playing her as a kitey mage. Now she's clearly about diving with R, charming, and landing a DFG combo to kill. Many former mage Ahri players are still salty about it.

In any case, great waveclear leading to assassin style roaming is Ahri's thing.

Leblanc received a huge nerf for being so dominant.

So did Talon. Doesn't change the fact that her rework led her to max W first for easy and safe waveclear. If anything, her nerf only emphasized the push and roam plan.

I don't play akali so I can't say anything about it, but I can say about kass Kass's early game is such trash tier and imo he gets shit on by pretty much every one. His laning phase is just about as bad as it gets. Zeds simply cannot be worse than that and he snowballs pretty much as hard.

His W has a pretty short range and high CD. But speaking of safety, Fizz has more, LB has more, Talon is not that safe, Akali has her shroud to protect her, Yi has several safeties, and Rengar has no safeties. Most assassins have plenty of safety abilities tied into their kit. Also, Zed can only farm with his Q early game which starts at a 6sec CD with a 75 Energy cost, that's quite a bit and is far from letting him stay up in CS.

Because Riot doesn't want every champion of a class being reduced in things like : high risk / high reward, can't clear waves, high damage, squishy. They mix up different things cause they want diversity. Some assassin can farm and clear waves, some can't.

Isn't the entire point of an Assassin to bide their time and wait until they can get the kill? That translates in game for Zed's laning phase as playing safe then going in at the right time.

Would an assassin in real life go in at a really bad time/expose themselves to immense danger to kill someone? No. They would play safe until they can do something. That is what most assassins in this game do.

Meep Man2 votes

Look, if Zed is the only reason you are losing fights then nullify him in a fight with peel and focus. I dont know exactly how long it takes for Zed to 100-0 an enemy, but it is long enough that a good CC champion can put him down. Do everything you have to to make Zed not fed or have enough gold if he is that big of an issue. If there is another fed champions on the enemy team and you can't focus Zed, then that isn't the champions, that is 80% of the time your team did poorly in the Laning Phase. If you cannot peel a Zed then don't blame the champion, look for ways to counter the champion rather than shout about how you can't do anything against him on the forums. Don't be lazy, get out of the habit of always play X way and you will win. Look to counter your enemy and win based on the current match, not a pre-game schematic in your head.
