Why the new direction? Why is Riot heading towards a Battle Royale game?
The only thing I can gather from everything I see lately is that Riot is ditching the old game design and, if they could, they would probably delete levels, items and turrets to just have you pick your favorite champions and see who kills more enemies and rushes the enemy nexus first. Honestly that's my impression, and while it may be appealing to some, it's not the game League of Legends was created to be. What I described is what's known as a simple Battle Royale game and it's pretty common, just a big brawl choosing whoever you like the most to duck it out, but it lacks the strategic element. Pretty much like those FPS games where you infinitely kill enemies and respawn to keep doing it with little purpose.
Now I get nostalgic because when I started in s2, I precisely enjoyed LoL because it felt like a "real time RPG". As in, it felt like those games like Pocket Monsters or Emblem of Fire or what have you, where you take turns to slowly advance and in battles you choose your spells trying to take advantage of weaknesses. It was in real time, no pauses, but still slow enough to give you time to think it through. And it was comfortable, starting a match was a great feeling because I knew that for the next hour I would be investing all of my brains and spirit into a match that could go either way unless Smurfs were involved. There were many times on the matches where I could just roam with no specific purpose, or that was maybe because I was bronze, but it was still very comfy to just run around the map trying to get more gold than the enemies preparing for our next battle. It wasn't boring, it was a breath of fresh air from the laning phase that allowed you to gather your mind and even chat a bit with allies and enemies.
I think that's one of the core changes now. Not just the bad powerscaling and questionable item decisions, but they pretty much eliminated all "empty spaces" in the match. There's always something going on from start to finish, and that looks prettier in paper than in reality. Super aggressive gameplay that is more appropiate for a fighting/shooter game than a strategy one.
There's probably someone out there with statistics that could show me the game wasn't as great as I remember it, but I'm still sure it was a more friendly environment than today's hyper-competitive game. I don't believe this new direction is organic, a MOBA game couldn't have been destined to go that way, I mean MOBAs were created to be strategic otherwise they would have made it a fighting game. Riot's creative team is either trying to get into another market niche with a new game without actually making a new one, or they really hate slow gameplay which is odd considering the genre and are packing it too much.
I kinda stopped playing a while ago because of it but I still keep an eye on the game and lurk here. Now, I know my post it's been done to death already , but I'm still posting my thoughts because I feel bad that I can't come back to the game I used to like the most. If only they could release a S2, S3 or maybe S4 Server for us nostalgic people to go play, I can assure millions would stay there.
TL;DR: WHY DID THEY TURN THE SUMMONER'S RIFT INTO ANOTHER DOMINION/TWISTED TREELINE/ARAM IF THOSE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE GAME MODES FOR PEOPLE WHO WANTED QUICK GAMES
