Weird idea for summoner's rift

As we know, bot lane is getting a lot of agency nowadays, the reasons for that are varied but the more prominent ones are:

-bot lane has the most people out of all lanes -bot lane has dragon -bot lane's turret is the weakest

These are honestly debatable because Top also has one very important objective that people seem to neglect in every game and the fortification effect only lasts for the first 5 minutes, what IS true is that bot is comprised of 2 players on each side and the rest of the lanes are comprised of only 1.

The problem comes down to a summoner spell: Teleport. The top/mid laner can sacrifice one of his spells in order to take teleport and help with the clown fiesta in bot but neither the support or the adc can do this to help pressure top/mid lane, if everyone had a teleport available, you'd better be sure that a gank from the jungler would have more than 1 person aiding them. Now of course I'm not going to propose making Teleport the new blue pill, that would be incredibly overpowered and the pacing of the game would be thrown out of the window, specially on pro play.

Now I'll frame the problem a little bit better: everyone CAN help bot lane, but bot lane can't help anyone but itself

If I'm playing as Vayne in bot for example, my influence in top lane is 0. If you are ahead as the adc and you want to help your top laner that has been getting camped you only have 2 choices (omitting global ults...), go back and walk to top turret or run through the river and jungle until you reach your destination. Supports kind of do this when they first go back, they wander quickly to mid lane in order to help out a bit but they inmediately go back, mid lane is not the problem, you can reach it in a reasonable amount of time, top lane though is a pain to reach.

I could write for hours on the issue but I'll try to make this post as concise as I can.

The idea that ADCs can't lane alone is simply wrong, if the support were to be removed from the game, making it a 4v4, adcs would need to adapt their playstyle, as a matter of fact there are quite a few ADCs with no dash or blinks that can be played in mid lane, but the support is here to stay and the game has 7 years being 5v5, the risk of either removing or adding another player is simply too high to even consider it.

For the longest time, I've been trying to come up with a way to spread the support influence throughout the map but every idea was cut short because, like it or not, the support role is the most diverse out of all the roles. I think that we have to accept the support role as it is and understand that changing IT will most likely break them... what CAN be done is to either cut agency from bot lane OR increase the agency on other lanes.

Now I'll simply throw the idea out there and I'll try to explain it a little bit afterwards:

What if, there were portals in bot and top lane that made both lanes almost next to each others?

hear me out, if this was an option the support role would be enhanced because he could theoretically support both top and bot lanes, not only is this important because support players get to be more proactive but also they would receive more constant experience, if their bot laner leaves, they can either stay and try to last hit or go to top and leech experience from there. More importantly is that good map awareness could decrease or increase pressure from ganks in both top and bot.

The mechanic could be fairly simple:

  • Click on the portal to start a brief channel (1 sec or so) and appear on the other side
  • Portals have a small cooldown after being used, 15 secs would be ok
  • Portals would be against the limiting walls of the rift and close but not immediately next to each turret, more like 200 units or so away
  • They only connect Top and Bot
  • There can only be one set of portals active per type of turret
  • Each team has their set of portals but only allies can use them, an enemy CAN'T use a portal to go top/bot and gank
  • When outer turrets fall, the portal stops working on both sides and the portals on inner turrets activates
  • If any inner turret falls, portals cease functioning completely
  • Inhibitor turrets, nexus turrets and fountain turrets do not have portals attached to them

TL;DR: read the bolds

Not hating on the idea, but there are a few flaws in your logic supporting it.

  1. Top has no important early objective. There is only rift, and rift is very weak right now. It is rarely if ever picked up in game because there is almost always something better you could be doing.

  2. Bot lane can help other lanes. A big part of the support's job is to roam. While the ADC rarely roams, the support can roam just as much, if not more than other lanes.

  3. Fortification is a Massive deal. It reduces all damage by half. That means it takes twice as long to burn as any other turret, and no other lane has the number of people to burn it. It means that turrets are almost unkillable without massive team effort pre 5 minutes, and when first turret gold is so impactful on victory (something like 70% winrate to first turret) there is no good reason to focus other lanes.

Yes I agree on all three points, the map would need to see some balance changes to support the idea and some of them would be a good idea even without the addition of portals like:

  • Making rift herald easier to take or make its reward better
  • remove fortification from top turret or add fortification to bot turret (although, taking a turret before 5 minutes is something that doesn't really happen or I haven't seen it)

As for the support roaming, yeah, the portals would help them roam more, no support roams top lane because leaving the adc for that long with the weakest turret can be really dangerous so they have to babysit and they can only roam towards mid.

The only problem i can see with this, Level 1 Darius goes bot and waits in the bot bush, other team walks into lane. Darius/ADC/Support go in for a level 1 3/2 they get kill/kills darius takes portal to top. Another thing that can happen is: Darius in top just got a kill and is low, the jg is coming to kill darius, darius uses portal gets to bot. It will be to ez to gang bang bot early. The jungle can use these. Clear bot side, take portal go to top side faster. or just clear top side gank bot at level 3. This will hurt bot a lot more than help

yeah this would be a possible strategy, maybe activate portals only when minions meet in the middle? or just leave it like so and allow creativity to run rampant O.o either way, both top and bot would find a balance in agency and I think that's the point

I feel the better fix would be to rearrange the map or make rift herald less tanky since people seem to ignore it. Another suggestion, maybe have the dragon spawn at random locations on the map so bot lane won't be as contested >.<.

While I agree that rift herald should have some sort of weight in the game (and it actually does but player perception vs actual numbers can be skewed sometimes) I don't think that moving Dragon from bot is a good idea, specially not making it even more RNG, the pace of the game seems to be enhanced by Dragon spawns and making rift herald easier to kill would make the buff too overpowered considering that it spawns only once and the buff lasts for a very long time :S

Changes to rift herald could help but giving top some agency would also increase the availability for rift herald contests since he would go down faster if left alone against 3 or 4 people.
