Question about Ivern and the Scuttlecrab

I just watched the spotlight on Ivern (personally I think he's going to be really fun), but I noticed that his passive around the scuttlecrab at the Baron pit was only on the spot where the crab spawns. Will his passive only take effect when the crab is in the ring? Or is it going to be impossible to take scuttle with Ivern?

The Scuttle Crab stops moving once you try to do the ring thing until it's formed.
