Idea on how to improve Nautilus

right now your passive as nautilus is basically that your auto attack will deal extra physical damage and root someone once every 9/8/7/6 seconds, and while it's on cooldown your AAs do nothing. i personally think it should be changed so that your AA should only root someone, and while it's on CD, as a passive effect your autos should deal the extra physical damage instead.

whether this would make him too strong or not, i'm not sure, but if that is the case they could lower the DOT on naut's shield to make up for the extra damage on your autos while the root is on cooldown. that being said there i think there should definitely be more of a balance between his shield and his passive (with the change i mentioned in mind).

currently if you have no shield you essentially have no damage. gameplay wise that's extremely frustrating, because your main source of damage on nautilus is an unreliable one (ex. shield gets popped in the middle of the fight you instantly become useless). thematically it doesn't make sense either, "the Titan of the Depths", who wields a giant anchor for a weapon, is no threat when he doesn't have his shield up?

A grand idea indeed. It is a very interesting and fun look at it. Although it leaves the question of when are Nautilus' basic attacks not dealing bonus damage to his enemy with this change. I mean, they can definitely deal bonus damage all the time, but it seems odd to have your basic attacks always deal bonus damage. Don't get me wrong, it is a good change!

that's true but you have to consider the fact that his basic attacks are relatively slow, and that most players probably aren't going to go beyond taking attack speed runes/masteries on him. i'm not saying a full tank build naut should be chunking people with his autos but he should at least have some alternative damage to fall back on when his shield gets popped

i didn't go into detail in my op but yeah there would definitely have to be some number changes. right now the bonus damage on his basic attack is 2+(6 times lvl), so that would have to be lowered and in addition to that they could lower the DOT on his W, to have more of a balance between that damage and his passive.

i read this in another thread about naut's W:

"It's simply a fail design for 2 years now that he has his main tank ability and dmg tied into ONE spell with ONE conditional (and that is to keep his shield alive) which results in a contradictory playstyle (you want to use his shield to tank, but u have to be careful not to pop it or u'll deal 0 damage).

Solution would be still one very freaking easy thing: separate his W bubble and damage. If he pops W he gets shield for X duration but on a totally unrelated side he gets damage for Y duration regardless his shield is up or not." http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/a3szoBta-the-real-problem-with-nautilus-and-his-w

i think that's a pretty good idea, he's basically saying separate the damage over time and shield itself on his W. so even if your shield gets popped you'll still have the damage over time regardless
