What I've Learned from Playing HotS...

GigglesO··49 votes·6,376 views

Their games last a shorter amount of time but feel more satisfying to me. Why you might ask? Well its that I'm not dying in .5 seconds and then getting spam taunted by the enemy team. I'm alive for a longer portion of the game. It feels good just being able to play the game even if I suck and am not contributing well to the team. I really wish we could tone down (champion) damage so that we could have a lane phase.

lowering damage would make tower dives harder because you would have to tank them longer. Lane phase wouldn't end at level 5 with a snowbally I killed my enemy laner 3 times ggez. Towers wouldn't fall as fast. Objectives like dragon and herald would be harder to take. Sustain champions would be able to sustain without having died instantly. Assasins will have to hit all 4 skills to kill you rather than over killing you by 1k damage if they hit all 4. Tanks won't be so burst heavy. Adc's won't be able to mow you down before you get to them. That is unless they actually kite. Right now they just stand still.

The game is just healthier with lower damage. No I'm not saying hue hue "tank meta". Historically tank metas have been when tanks deal too much damage for how tanky they are. I'm saying we need their damage to be lower too.

Some things to consider when comparing HotS to LoL:

  1. HotS as more team objectives.
  • Instead of 5 turrets, inhib, and nexus (Single lane analysis); you have 6 turrets (recently dropped from 9), 3 inhibs that fight back, 3 "gates," a nexus that fights back, and health/mana potions next to each inhib.
  1. HotS has more powerful neutral objectives.
  • Dragons, harolds, barons, alters, and spiders don't win games. They help teams do what they're already doing. Neutral objectives in HotS are (generally) how you win the game. With very few exceptions, winning lanes and ignoring neutrals will lose the game.
  1. HotS has a significantly less flexibility. Which makes fine tuning lot easier.
  • A character designed to be a tank (Johanna) can never be anything but a tank. They can do increased damage, but in-game systems ensure they will never come remotely close to an assassin. This means they can be balanced on the assumption that they will always do the only thing they're designed to do - they way they're designed to do it. No Tank Ekkos and AP Tryndameres here.

  • Meanwhile in LoL, any character is technically capable to doing near ADC level damage. With bad ratios, you can still generally stack enough AP to kill a squishy. And even the most die-hard squishies can become brick walls (Tank Yasuo, Akali, Fizz, Ekko, Vayne, etc.).

  1. Hots supports are healers.
  • ALL OF THEM. That is literally the defining characteristic of a support in HotS. And they heal a ton. On the weakest end, Tass gives shielded characters 40% life steal. On the opposite extreme, Auriel can 1-100 her entire team with a basic skill (yes, there are caveats to this). By HotS standards, Soraka is laughably bad.

  • Not to mention all the sustain in HotS: Regen globs with every minion wave and neutral objective (can now steal enemy globes as well), Wells that restore 40/30% health/mana every 2 minutes, and generally higher regen overall (until LoL reaches late game).

  1. Team levels.
  • How do assassins farm in LoL? Target who ever got shut down during lane phase and never let them leave base. What happens when they do this in HotS? They miss experience, putting their entire team behind if they fail. Conversely, a lost lane in LoL always results in that team being -1 player; even if another lane snowballed. While in HotS, these two will balance each other out keeping both teams even.

  • A lot of the power in LoL is that small 1 character lead. Because players that break even often have no recompense for an ally that is behind other than to let them fall further behind. One of the biggest contributors to snowballing right now isn't necessarily damage, but how quickly and easily leads can compound on themselves.

Meep Man2 votes

You right, except not all "Support" heroes are healers. Tassadar uses shields (and yes, saw what you said, but still) and there are a few other Heroes that are used almost identically to a Support, but aren't labeled as such for matchmaking purposes, like Medivh and Abathur. (matchmaking in HotS for those that dont know, at least when you aren't doing a Draft, typically tries to loosely pair you against a team with a similar layout to try and make it more fair feeling, but wont sacrifice making you wait a long time to do this however so it doesnt always turn out that way)

I Do Not Recall3 votes

Wait, what was your point? I just read your whole post, it was very well formatted and informative but you literally just listed differences between hots and LoL...

feeling confused.

IMO I agree with the OP, and non of the things you listed seem to contradict what hes saying. they are very different games for sure, and so need to be balanced differently.

But as a stand alone, I think most people would agree League was funner when you had resists options from runes and masteries (the current "runes") didn't give you a bunch of free burst for literally no other reason than to "spice up the game".

League is trying to evolve into something it never was, and shouldn't be. League was always about laning, that was the enjoyable part of league. People started mass complaining when junglers became too strong and fucked with lanes too much, when towers became weaker, and now when the laning phase ends at 5 minutes.

The entire game, i can only assume and i sure hope it was intentional, was balanced around being able to lane long enough to pick up atleast one fully built item, so that you get an item for laning, and then you start building other items as the game pace dictates, team fight item, snowballing item, split pushing item, defensive item, etc.

Now all three lanes are over by the time i finish my first item, but it doesn't even matter because all the power i got before from building a gold lead and an item advantage has now been front loaded into runes, they give flat burst damage that scales with level and often even give percentage increases to damage as well. CS literally doesn't matter in this game any more besides as experience.

And the new rune system fucking up the gold system and the relevancy of items is just one aspect.

By removing the old rune system they completely fucked this game up balance wise, nothing makes sense anymore.

And to be fair, this is kind of what they intended to happen, I'm not claiming this was some unforseen blunder that riot stumbled into, they wanted to shake things up.

But can we all jut admit its not really working? Please? You can make games fast paced and enjoyable to watch and play without removing macro elements, Starcraft can do it, League had it too, but now its gone.

DemonBoneJangles8 votes

couldn't agree more with this, ive played HoTs and felt like I enjoyed the match more even if I'm losing because I have a chance to make a difference through strategy not how many kills I get, plus the global exp helps alot

Aedificator14108 votes

It's an entirely different game. And much more casual too.

The only feature that riot should copy is how their matchmaking works; they always match people against the same mmr, instead of matching teams of the same mmr. The difference is that if your mmr is high, you don't get matched with 4 people whose mmr is low, and are expected to carry them. Which is how league works currently.

Attticus Finch7 votes

Heroes of the Storm is more casual only on the sense that it has less tedious mechanics. Its more casual then League on the same way League is more casual then DotA with the absense of things like turn speed and DotA in turn is more casual then Starcraft.

There are quite a lot of things LoL can learn from HotS, honestly.

Xonra2 votes

It is more casual in literally every aspect.

Less mechanics to learn, less mechanical skill in most heroes abilities, no runes/masteries so zero out of game management, towers are just roadblocks of pointless even more so than LoL, the game doesn't care about your personal skill so much as you not going afk and sit near xp basically. You say "tedious mechanics", but I don't find them tedious, and I actually get bored with HoTs REALLY quick because of the lack of them.

There is nothing LoL should learn from HoTs unless you want to make LoL less fun, less interesting, less mechanical, and more casual.

T4underbolt3 votes

You literally played vs beginner bots in hots at best. Some champs in hots have complicated combos and require huge dedication to make it work in higher elos. Dont talk about things you dont know.

Xonra1 votes

Just because you don't like my statement doesn't mean you get to attempt to discredit it, sorry to say. You and that one other guy can downvote me, but you are still wrong.

Meep Man4 votes

Hey, go play Abathur, Illidan, Lost Vikings, Medivh, and Alarak. Then tell me there is little skill in playing a hero in HotS.

Xonra1 votes

Some of what you named are also flat out bad balance wise most of the time, and no one plays them for a reason, not because of the skill of the heros. And very few people play abathur (or play well I should say) cause if it isn't done well (which most of the time there is no reason to learn how to play it well), then you put your team at a massive disadvantage.

Meep Man2 votes

Not sure what you mean here. I would say HotS has the same amount of mechanics as League, just located in different places.

Xonra1 votes

That is clearly a bias or something, because that is flat out not true just from an in game perspective, ignoring everything else.

You don't have to last hit/farm. You don't have to bother with timers as the game verbally tells you when a thing is happening to take a neutral objective. there is very little realistic decision making as it is "do x to do what you are already doing faster" or "do x objective cause that's how you win". Combat is less mechanical in almost every case. The champions aren't equally mechanical outside of the lost vikings type stuff which is usually not worth playing.

LaserDeathBlade7 votes

HoTS is fun to play casually because that's when the game is played as it's intended - as an action packed brawler. The moment you try to play it even the slightest bit competitively, it becomes cancerous. Because the heroes are so 'unique' (read: imba) and individual mechanics are so downplayed, the game is basically decided between hero draft and the game-knowledge of your stupidest ally.

I actually made it to GM in HoTS, but it was totally unworth it because the gameplay got so dull I burned out and quit. All you do is hump your teammates and rotate around farming minions while your heimerdinger-equivalent soaks the side lane. If someone gets caught, you're done-zo. If you rotate too slow, you're done-zo. If you have the gall to pick non-meta heroes, you're done-zo.

My advice to anyone who wants to play HoTS is just stay bad, and stay glad.

We give shit at Riot’s balancing, but Blizzard’s balancing is horrifically inconsistent at best and downright unplayable at worst.

I also hate their obsession with mandatory healers in every single game they make. Who the fuck does this appeal to in quick action games?

I hate people like you. And if youre down, i would like to challenge you to any set of skill tests youd like. 1v1, 2v2, 5v5, aram, farm comp, etc. And only under the circumstances that after i steamroll you, i can post it to youtube.

Mmm yeah, silverV duo'ing with diamond. Seems legit. Either you're lying about this one, since you can't duo with people more than one division away, or you just said you were getting boosted by a dia/master. Either way, that's bad.

Not to mention your proposition is laughable xd 1v1 in league ? What's the point ? The very fact you proposed that confirms your elo.

And if silver isn't your elo, then feel free to get out of it, I'll believe you are the god you say you are once you reach diamond, without the help of your "friend-who-is-master" c:

First of all, you dodged my challenge, only referencing the 1v1, i stated we could measure skill in any way you please, offering a challenge in no way states my rank as said before.

Second of all, http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=zeksee We havent played that much THIS week, but that is my duo partners new main. Diamond5 right now, season 6 challenger on his main account

What you dont understand is you dont have to play ranked every game, notice i only played around 100 all of last season.

As for getting out of silver, my account sat a bronze 1 100lp 2 wins for about 6 months, i didnt grind this year, i practiced, ill be fine when the season starts, silver has become ezpz

Im not being boosted lol, i play most of my summoners rift games with a high elo player. Im sorry it hurts your feelings that im silver 5

Let me enlighten you. You are getting carried. You are not high skill or anything. The excuse of :im not playing rankeds but im at master level skill is the typical excuse of hard stuck bronze players. Amd i dont try to prove youre not playing with him. I dont think im a challenger player, no need for enlightenment boss.

im really not trying to sit here and boast, but the "ive played with thousands of diamond supports" "how are you in bronze 1" "you need to play more ranked" "we need to keep this duo up" "bronze1supopop" at this point has made it evident that i need to play more ranked games next season.

Sure you can say hes being nice/talk me up, but he doesnt have to continue to inv me, we've been discord friends forever, this guy wouldnt play with me if he didnt find it 1000% better than solo queueing norms.

While i may not be a diamond level player in my own right, im easily not silver 5, and easily keep up in duo with him.

The "diamond carry" you speak of was WAY less evident than i thought it would be, in fact the difference is super low.. i expected extreme difference, what i got was gold players who ward, farm, and position better.

See yah next season booboo ;D*[slayer-jinx-catface]*

So basically it is extreme differnce, because thats one of the most important things in the gme:warding, farmig, positioning. Plus for the love of god those are normal games. Nobody plays them seriously. He qs with you because he doesnt give a sht about it. He doesnt lose rank or mmr for ranked season. Its nothing special. I was playing 5 man premades normals with plats/diamonds for a while 6 months after i started to play the game. I just wanted to see what they do how they play but its just chill party. I dont understand what is so special about playing with a higher elo duo partner in normals that you brag about and use it as an argument, trying to prove how better you are than silver 5. And whats with this bonobo? Placements will put you at best in bronze 3 if not 5. I will get placed 2 full divisions higher than you at the very start so no, we wont see each other in the same ranked bracket. We will see how far wwill you get.

Xonra2 votes

Because the fact is they have no real argument, and they probably have low self esteem, so the only thing they can hold over someone is their rank. When in reality this silver 5 guy is probably smarter at the game but has shit tier mechanics (not trying to be rude, but I've seen some people that were pretty damn smart at the game concepts and knowledge, but simply couldn't put it into the game completely).

The amount of people in plat I know that in 2017 can't even tell me when dragon/baron spawn, let alone how long before they respawn after death (even though there are friggin timers TELLING you lol), it special. But they will be the worst to then turn around and go "yeah well, I'm plat and you are silver so shut up".

You are my idol. As a person who comments on the threads/forums here, and or is active in chat in-game. I can't tell you how many times I get shut down with "lol you're x rank" as if that somehow invalidates anything I say.

I know very high end game mechanics. I know what you should do in lane to win the lane. I know how to outplay the other player in most cases. I know how to freeze the lane, and I know where I hsould be at any given time in most situations. I know a helluva lot about league....

But that doesn't mean I can always do it, or do it well. It doesn't mean I can last hit as well as I should be able too, and it doesn't mean I don't fat finger the shit out of my keyboard hwne i'm trying to do a tricky 4 button combo in .0001 seconds. Hence why I'm in Silver. I don't have the time to play the game as much as people in plat. It doesn't mean I don't know just as much about league as them.

Xonra2 votes

Don't think that really matter as much as people like to mock people about their rank.

If that is where he is mostly playing, then what does that matter? It isn't like he is playing with or against other diamonds, so he is clearly on equal footing skill wise with who he is with and against.

So really, this comment of yours is pointless rank shaming.

Aedificator14101 votes

It most certainly isn't rank shaming.

If you want an easy-to-grasp comparision, Garen can be played a lower elo with some success, but the higher the elo, the less success you find. This isn't "rank shaming", I'm simply stating that some champions have more success at some ranks than at others.

If that is where he is mostly playing, then what does that matter? It isn't like he is playing with or against other diamonds, so he is clearly on equal footing skill wise with who he is with and against.

Where a champion is played largely influences the winrate of this champion. According to stats only, Azir and Ryze were deceptively weak at lower elo, going as low as 40% winrate, while at the very same time, they were above 55% at dia1+ level. So yes, where you play a champion does have an influence. Your opponents have as much an influence over your win/lose as you do.

Worth noting, (as a diamond player in hots) that everyone there thinks they are a god at the game, and if you dont follow their advice to the letter, that youre a moron.

and its not uncommon that 3 different people with 3 different views are on the same team. And flame eachother.

Hots while is a great game, has become where all the hipster players flock to to fuel their god complex.

GigglesO6 votes

Wait as a Diamond player in lol, I'd like to ask how lol is any different.

All of my teammates that I get think they are gods.

They all flame.

And they all do have a god complex...

So I'm not really sure how player behavior is meant to mean something towards their game pacing feels better because I'm not dead for a large portion of the game.

Hibeki3 votes

Because hots actually requires team play and communication, it makes it a bit different.

In lol, if youre ahead, it doesnt really matter what you do as long as you dont afk in base.

in hots if youre ahead, you can easily give up your lead if you dont continue to push it.

so when 3 people in hots are all hot faced determined to play differently, teams fall flat on their ass because nobody works together.

However, heros that force wins alone (Sylvanas, Murky, etc) do exist and is why I solely play them. So dunderheads don't influece my game to such an extreme.

GigglesO2 votes

That happens in league too though... The reason its currently so seldom is because we are in a snowball meta where you F*** the enemy hard and fast.

Xonra2 votes

See and I feel the exact opposite. In LoL sure you snowball hard but you can make a stupid mistake and give up the lead. In HoTs as long as you don't fall asleep at your keyboard with a lead, you aren't easily giving it up. If you get a lead in HoTs, just don't be stupid, and you aren't likely to lose said lead.

I'm not sure why I keep seeing otherwise. It sounds like people don't know the game as well as they are claiming. Rarely do I get ahead, just flat out "we are winning" and not end up winning. I've had faaaaaaaaaaaaar more comebacks in LoL during any time frame, including now, than in HoTs.

What I've learned from HotS is that in my second game I ever played in I statistically stomped over a level 300+ HotS vet in a Player vs AI match. And it is a bit of fun but a fair bit different.

Ariel the Cruel8 votes

HotS level is like the new LoL level. It is a show of experience, not skill.

You could argue HotS is even more vague than LoL because it's based on character experience. And characters level up significantly slower as you use them. You can get a character almost from 0 to 2 in a single game, but 20-21 can take a full day (depending on your W/L ratio). Throw in win of day bonuses, party bonuses, friend bonuses, and boosters; you can get those first few hundred levels surprisingly fast if you really want to (and are buying characters).

RocketRelm8 votes

"Player vs AI match"

That kinda invalidates your point. In league, a veteran platinum rank player going into bots is doing so for shenanigans, and on average gives somewhere between -2 and -8 fucks. I'm hardly gonna make the claim "I did better than this plat player in a co-op bot game" like it means literally anything at all.

Xonra3 votes
  • It lasts less time, but not THAT much less.
  • A victory feels as hollow as a win to me in most cases cause you have very little agency on your own
  • You don't die in ".5 seconds" but you usually know pretty quick when you are gonna lose a fight when it starts, so it drags out sometimes
  • You actually aren't alive a longer portion of the game because death timers are near equivalent but shorter game times (part of why games are shorter cause if 2 people die around the same time you have a massive advantage and can do a lot with it)
  • It feels bad or everyone else on your team if you suck though, cause while 1 person can't contribute alone, they can drag their team down massively if they aren't getting xp or helping with objectives
  • Towers in HoTs are even more useless than in LoL, so don't think even bringing that up in this conversation is relevant.

It's fine if you like HoTs, but your comparisons are way off and some of what you say is off the mark too (as someone who plays HoTs).

I personally get super bored with HoTs as the games don't feel all that interesting after a few matches as you could never PvP and still win/lose 100%, especially on some maps. I know cause I've done it just ignoring the enemy mostly, running them around the map, and taking objectives while they try to kill you and win anyways. The lack of any depth makes it really bland as well as in 99.9% of cases you don't pick for the situation leveling, just what is best out of the choices (there are some heroes where this isn't true, but that isn't often even in Ranked).

Unlocking heroes in that game is 10 times more of a grind than it is in LoL and the prices are more ridiculous to buy them with rl money as well. It is a grind and doesn't feel near as rewarding unlocking things (to me personally).

Hots is a casual game. League is a competitive skill based game. Go play pokemon or something if you want to have an easy going game.

GigglesO4 votes

Yes, that is why I made it to diamond the last two seasons in a row... Just because I don't like the current game doesn't mean I'm not good at it in its current state. I just want to have strategic diversity like in previous seasons. Each season I feel more and more removed with the damage creep. League was the only game I played, and its gotten so far removed from its original strategic gameplay that I'm playing other games.

If a loyal customer of 7 years switches companies there is likely a larger issue.
