Why does Akali passive heal first, then damage?

This literally makes no sense. As a assassin you want to do quickly burst one with all your damage then heal up through the fight to kill more right? When assassinating someone she has half a passive, it's counterintuitive...

to give her "counterplay"

Really i would say the notion of it being a double auto hit proc is a good deal of counter play especially since her R is not what can proc her Q mark, only her auto attacks.

You have to also account for how Akali tics in some ways.

-The first item grab for a 'standard' akali should be rushing hex'tech revolver as soon as possible for that on hit auto bonus which combined with her Q's mark leads to some devastating damage. Lets not even add in the mini damage boost from the new mastery on our red side of masteries which every few seconds(which is 6 if i recall) you deal a tiny bit of increased damage thru your next 'auto attack' on a 10+1 per each of your level scale, not that much but it stacks up for extra poke damage.

-As a result, Akali is always that opening window sort of burst champion which they kind of at least toned it down a little with how fast she can use her R in between casts, but it doesnt stop the charge restock on kills/assists to help her go into a snowball like Before 6.22 Katarina functioned. Having a CD refund on E's kills and the mini flash when she uses her W also makes her able to wave clear faster and jump enemies with ease. Though the changes of the passive actually adopt things better.

-How do the changes to the passive help her out? Well for one thing instead of being a constant 'demand' of split building AP and AD to satisfy the strong Spellvamp power and increased auto attack damage. She can now focus on either branch with more intent, how does this work?

*Her Q and R are pure AP scale but since her passive will increase its damage 'and' heal on top of the damage thru her E regardless of stat value, she can easily put more focus intent on a more AP based build or even tilt to a AD based build after being her standard Gun'blade to give her strong sustain power.

*Because they work by 'proc'ing' on her autos, they can turn into better sustain measures (quicker last hitting for the 2nd hit, while first hit can let her recover from poke damage or when she dives for a trade then being forced to constantly use her abilities often). Plus since it goes on a 8~4 second cool down rate, its pretty difficult for her to not be using it super often to where she can heal back much faster without burning up her energy to start a gank or trade and put more focus intent on forcing a enemy skill shot type champion waste mana if they are those types of champions trying to poke you down while you can transition a tad bit easier to level 6, when burst down murder any enemy champions who keep trying to turret wall you.

At the very least Akali feels smoother with the 'upgrades' thanks to the 6.22 'Assassin update', unlike how Katarina got screwed over in losing critical elements such as her Q's mark and her little 'dagger pick up trick' seems to make it difficult in laning and ganking without a much better understanding of how to even get her to work now. Though Akali could have her passive flipped to deal the bonus damage first, it might as well be not peeling back her snowball nature a bit to allow enemies better chances for counter play, but if they make no attempt to counter play, then they simply get melted anyway. Plus since the cooldown starts on her first hit, it does not exactly make it difficult to focus intently on jumping a target, auto hitting for the damage bonus alongside the mark damage bonus and then W escape into a constant torture match against a enemy laner.

Either way by your logic, the 'spell vamp' would of been pointless on the old Akali, but try to remember once again: "They also wanted Assassins to actually have kits that divide them from the other Assassins, not just simply be jump on a target and instant kill them and nothing different they do with it. Them having different ways to approach a target at least makes it more difficult to counter them with some one trick item grab or champion pick, still rather want champions like Ekko to get a actual utility nerf, not just simply losing his passive's slow.'

love the wall of text for pretty much saying what riot was thinking when they decided to make her heal first and then deal damage.

please give me another wall of unnecessary text [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

It's probably to make you work for the burst and give it more delay time/less accessibility.

Even though Akali's double proc took 4 seconds minimum to complete.
