6 of the last 10 champions have knockups/displacements

Fisher No Chains··39 votes·2,056 views

Last 10 champion releases: Jhin, Aurelion Sol, Taliyah, Kled, Ivern, Camille, Xayah, Rakan, Kayn, Ornn.

AurelionSol has a displacement on his ult, depending on the distance between his stars and your champ; Taliyah has a knockup/displacement on her W; Kled has 2 small displacements, Q and R; Ivern Daisy has a 3-hit AoE knockup; Camille has a small displacement on her E; Rakan his W is an AoE knockup; Kayn Rhaast's W is an AoE knockup; Ornn E and R are AoE knockups.

Since the next champ is designed by CertainlyT, I'm fairly sure that it'll have a knockup as well. I don't like this trend of giving knockups to every possible champion kit, at least until we get a way to counter those hard CCs since tenacity doesn't affect them.

I miss CCs that can be cleansed/reduced. If you get chain-CC'd by multiple knockups you can just go afk because there's nothing you can do about it.

If Ivern's ult, Daisy auto's you three times you get knocked up too. Why isnt he here

Velzard of Koz7 votes

Also Camille pushes her target back with the rope-jump.

Fisher No Chains3 votes

Whoops, almost forgot Ivern exists, I'll fix that asap.

Thanks!

Ornn has 4 knockups/displacements.

Q: Pillar spawn is a displacement/knockup (triggers Courage) W: Brittle'd Autos are displacements, triggers Courage (not sure if it counts as airborne) E: Impact aoe knockup, definitely airborne, triggers Courage. R: Second pass ult is aoe knockup, airborne and triggers Courage.

Fisher No Chains2 votes

Well, I could count Camille too then since her E briefly displaces people hit. I was talking about actual knockups that lock you down for ages if you get hit. I'm honestly fine with Ornn having CC, he's a tank and it's all he provides for his team. But other champions are loaded with knockups for no real reason.

ZT Xperimentor2 votes

You'd be surprised what is considered a popup. I've seen yasuo ult off of people knocked back from trundles pillar, likewise you loose total control during that split second; so yeah displacements count. I concur that there should be some counterplay to this crippling cc, since riot won't lower the mobility.

Fisher No Chains2 votes

I've seen Yasuo ult off blast cone so... Not even talking about how is ult synergizes with everything rn lol

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

I agree displacements are too prevalent, but considering they're the most reliable for interrupting mobility . . . Now if only we had some counterplay to vulnerability denials, lol.

Chembaron Yamada3 votes

If that is your argument, then I don't understand why you listed Kled as having knock ups. He basically needs these CCs to be displacements, because they are already really short in duration and if they could get reduced by tenacity, then having this CC would be basically pointless.

Fisher No Chains1 votes

I don't think his Q displacement is... short. I think it's very powerful if he manages to stay in range. I just made a list of champions released with displacements, I am not saying "hey Kled should not have one!!!" because I can agree with some of those knockups... But let's be real, they've released more knockups than actual stuns in the last 2 years.

Chembaron Yamada2 votes

It is a 100 unit displacement and the duration of the actual hard CC is really short. https://youtu.be/uW2linaaqRI Look at that video, pay attention how long Sion is actually not able to move. The displacement is short, that doesn't mean I am saying that it is a weak ability.

It deals a good chunk of damage if you build some AD and slows after the displacement, so you are able to stick to your enemy. But the hard CC is really not lasting long, mostly it is for interrupting enemies and some sticking power.

Have to agree that we got alot of displacements and knock ups, though. The upside is that a CC, which can't be altered in duration, is earier to balance in my opinion.

Champion Skin2 votes

Actually a small knock up or displacement is still powerful since it can stop dashes

This is part of why Thresh E is so powerful because of the AoE and it being pretty instant it is quit easy for Thresh to prevent enemies from dashing past him

Velzard of Koz1 votes

Then why did you list Kled?

L Psy Kongroo7 votes

Now that I think about it, a lot of champions released in the last few years have some kind of knockup. Looking further back than the OP's list, we've got:

RekSai knockup on W

Kalista knockup on ult

Velkoz knockup on E

Braum knockup on ult

Azir knockup on ult

Yasuo knockups everywhere

This isn't even considering the champions who gained knockups by being reworked: Galio Sion Urgot Yorick (technically his W can displace you, much like Trundle's pillar, if you're right on top of it when it spawns, but I admit this one is stretching things a bit).

Add all these to the list of champions who already had knockups of some kind in their kit and that's a hell of a lot of cc that you simply can't do anything about. It would be one thing if Tenacity reduced knockup duration, but for some reason Riot doesn't want to do that.

Votable Jester9 votes

Azir also had a knockup on his E when he was released.

nGio5 votes

Zac Q rework, more displacement.

Fisher No Chains1 votes

If we count class updates, we also have Maokai who got a bigger knockback on his Q, and the absolute mess that was Zac who has like... 3 multi-target displacements? I think that half of the problem with reworked Zac is that if he manages to jump on you there's basically nothing you can do, simply because you can't cleanse/reduce ANY of his CCs.

Skorch6 votes

Well yeah but other forms of CC are still pretty popular. For instance: Jhin has Root+Slows ASol has Stun Taliyah has slows Kled only has his 2 small displacements Ivern has a Root, a Knockup, and i THINK a slow (Dont remember but doesnt his range autos slow?) Camille has a tiny displacement+slow+Does her ult count as CC? Xayah has a Root Rakan has a charm Kayn has a slow on W when NOT Rhaast Ornn is disruption incarnate.

Taking into count reworks since WW we have: WW has suppresion+fear Galio has taunt+2 knockups (And his passive MIGHT slow dont remember) Evelynn has a charm.

So i agree Displacements are pretty popular RN, but if you DONT count the tiny displacements like Camille/Kled/ASol. Knockups are just another form of CC that is used when every champion has AT LEAST 1.

Who is Taliyah5 votes

Here is a way to avoid Taliyah's knockback.

  • get boots
Fisher No Chains8 votes

Yea, Taliyah's W is super easy to dodge unless you're slowed/creep blocked.

Not talking about reliability here though. More about the fact that knockups are getting too popular.

All hail for the true Bronze master Yasuo

ChiTenshi3 votes

The issue is whether the Knock-ups are being added as a default CC (which is lazy), or they're doing it as an attempt to make Yasuo increasingly viable in more team-comps.

If you start from Yasuo's release, most of the Champions released/reworked have a Knock-up (Azir had a Knock-up on release but this was removed due to him being broken).

Seems very coincidental.

Spank the Fox2 votes

Weird conspiracy.

Yasuo thematically is already a very popular champion (loner, edgy, samurai) that isn't tough to sell skins for, and Yasuo is bad not because he doesn't have enough opportunities to use his ultimate.

Besides, Yasuo's ult only shines in large area knock ups, like Malphite and Wukong (old champions). Using it on Camille's .2 second displacement isn't gonna make him more viable.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

Actually, fun trivia:

Knock-ups ignoring tenacity was originally a bug. Like Ward hopping (see old Kat, Jax, Lee), it was considered interesting enough to leave in the game.

The reason Riot Likes Knock-ups now is because they're immune to tenacity. Riot doesn't have to balance them under the assumption that they can be reduced.

Kinda funny, actually.

DeathBurst3 votes

I agree with the sentiment, but not with the form of your argument. Like, sure, Camille and Kled are technically knock-up, but it's so short that it would be useless if you could reduce it any more, and it's not the kind of things that can lead to uncleansable chain-CCs. The stun on Camille after the knock-back, and the heavy slow on Kled after the pull are much more important, and THAT can be cleansed. Just an example, same thing is true for a lot of champs in your list.

Where I'm annoyed is when ALL Ornn's CC are knock-up. Not a single stun, nothing that can be cleansed. Compared to a Nautilus or a Malphite or a Maokai, that's far too much knock-ups, and not enough other CCs like Roots or Stuns.

Cowseed3 votes

You know the ironic thing? None of these champs are currently problematic. :D

Maybe your just being a tad over dramatic about this. I mean, Ornn has the most displacements/knockups of all of them and he's kinda shit tier.

The more champions that get released with huge mobility and huge damage to compliment it, the more ways/ options there needs to be to lock them down in game

And what about immobile champions? They have no mobility, maybe huge damage, but they feel so bad to play vs a team with 5 knockups. Even mercs are useless because you know, their duration can't be reduced with tenacity.

Immobile champions are supposed to be susceptible to CC. Especially considering it's immobile champions who dominate the game right now. And when we move to a mobility meta, the CC will be just as appreciated

Fisher No Chains2 votes

I don't see immobile champions dominate the game except for Kog or Twitch, and you're not going to CC them anyway because they'll melt you before you can even try lol

NineTailedMystic2 votes

Knock Ups aren't the correct form of punishing mobility. It punishes the champion who want to buy Tenacity like Tanks and Fighters.

Spank the Fox1 votes

Except almost all the recent knock ups are so short or situational, even having them be affected by tenacity wouldn't matter.

The only significant ones on OP's list are Taliyah, Rakan, Kayn and Ornn.

The first two's primary power in their kit is tied in with their W, Kayn requires going into Rhaast and Ornn is this year's Nautilius, plus he was garbage even with all that displacable CC.

DuskDaUmbreon2 votes

Camille's E's displacement is pathetically small, as is Kled's R's displacement. It's essentially the knock back equivalent of Kassadin's Q - only good for interrupting channels and proccing Courage.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

AurelionSol (ult), Taliyah (W), and Camille (ult) displacements are necessary for kit functionality. Theirs is justified.

RavenMagus1 votes

Knockups are very cool and thematic. Get smacked by a lava ram? Makes sense that you get knocked high into the air rather than simply stunned.

But the mechanic is busted as all heck. I really think that Riot needs to rework the code to allow knockback distance/duration to be reduced by tenacity.

50000000000000001 votes

I think knockups are important since they can interrupt dashes, but I think maybe we need a type of CC that can interrupt CC but also be reduced by tenacity.

DragonShea1 votes

Basically, make Tenacity reduce displacement.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

It's part of their game design to give knockups to champions who need them on unreliable to land skills. The knockup duration goes up according to how hard it is to land (save some ultimates).

Knockbacks shouldn't even be considered in the same category. Knockbacks have very little actual CC time expect for some with stuns attached to them (LeeSin oh how much I hate that it does, this one is even classified as a knockup because of it)

Ornn is a tank, most tanks have to have knock ups. The sub-par tanks like mundo have no cc. So that is understandable.

Also, Aurelion Sol is all about positioning and your ult is mostly saved has his only form of self peel. Also understandable.

The rest of those champs could have had kits that had gone even in a slightly different direction to avoid giving them knock ups/displacements. But I feel as though Ornn and Aurelion sol are justified.

A displacement I DO NOT feel is justified is thresh's initial Q. He displaces the target very briefly once its hit with Q incase you didnt know. Yasuo can even ult off of it. I dont feel this is necessary for a support that has so much outplay potential and is generall all around a solid support. Some may not agree, but I just dont feel like its necessary. Certainly not op.

Don't forget that 4 of the last 7 also have a period when they are untargetable. Kayn His ult Xayah Her ult Camille Her ult Kled Being knocked off skarrl, which also de-aggros towers.

Before these champs only about 10~ had this fun and engaging gameplay mechanic.

And on another note, Jhin is the only champ out of the past 11, and the only one released after 2015 that has gotten a skin in addition to their release skin.
