BEST COMMUNITY EVER! I LOVE PLAYING WITH THESE GUYS!!!!!!!!!

arbokfister··111 votes·9,664 views

I love when I get on to play League, a game known for its AMAZING community, and I encounter players like our Hecarim. Man, I just love playing a game, a Normal Game, mind you, and people take it so seriously as to wish death on other players! Nothing says "I need to re-queue and play another game because that was a blast" like death threats. It's a real shame that I can only honor him once per game :( He should have all the badges tbh because it was his constant name calling and threats that had me motivated to take it to the next level. Oh, I forgot to mention he kept threatening to afk/quit. #bestgameofalltime

You sure? I've seen a lot of people complaining about "unfair" bans the last few months.

Maybe I worded it incorrectly. I mean to say that if this was in ranked it'd be expected, but the fact that this is in a normal game just makes it pathetic. Well, a lot MORE pathetic than it already is.

There is no "more pathetic than" when you are talking about threatening people for a videogame. Normal or Ranked are meaningless terms out of the videogame. A videogame is something we play just for fun, but it is something absolutely non important in terms of life. The fact that we have learned to consider that some mode of game that gives you certain kind of points as "more important" than others is something artificial. At the end it is just another game mode of a videogame. As irrelevant as that.

think your taking this too seriously, it is not often when the threats are truly meant. not saying it is 100% ok, but both sides tend to know not to take it too seriously.

It is not up to you to decide what is serious for someone and what is not. It doesn't matter what intentions are behind every evil thing. Something wrong will always be something wrong. I don't care if this Hecarim is a 15 years old kid who is ugly as shit and has no friends. Ban him forever from this game and lets hope someone can educate him correctly because obviously the parents aren't.

If you have problems to see that this behavior is bad, you have issues and I cannot correct them in one post on an online forum.

macromite2 votes

Actually, I have no real problem seeing good and evil, just that I'm so adept at it that I can see the good in evil and the evil in good.

Let's start with this, guy tells someone to kill themselves, obviously this is bad, but we don't know the situation entirely, not either of us, and it can be rooted deeper than either of us can truly understand at this point.

Second, you yourself said that you can't tell other how seriously that people should take things, and then followed up with something that very well resembled you telling me how serious I should take this, and how you want others to take it seriously.

Third, you take such offense to this, that you would want him banned from what you are pretty much saying could be his only joy in life, after also saying that this person, that you know nothing of, is ugly as shit ,has no friends, and has horrible parents. In a situation where someone online telling you to kill yourself actually succeeds, that would also do the same.

Fourth, you say that something wrong will always be wrong, but that in of itself is the only wrong, you see, for all situations must be taken separately.

Small edit here because the original point was unclear. The rest of this is meant to stay separate from the rest of the comment, but it is still important to be read before moving on to the next on in the stream.

If I kill a man, I'm bad. If I kill a man who is going to set off a bomb in a population center and doing so will stop him, am I still bad? The answer? There is a man dead. A man who will never see his family again, never say goodnight to his kids again. Its to terrible to be good. its to terrific to be evil.

So may I ask again, what is evil?

I'll tell you what your comment is: demagogy. Nor I said that he was ugly, nor I said he had no friends (I said "I don't care IF..."), nor it matters the "circumstances" of such harassment. If you want to have a full picture, that's up to you. I am not judging the OP nor what he did because I have no evidence. And I don't really care. We are here seeing a series of incredibly offensive comments made by someone. I'm sorry if I don't give a shit about what other players might have said first. If they said things just as bad as that, then they'll have to be punished as well. Demagogy. Pure and simple. Comparing saving a city with online harassment of a guy who said to others to kill themselves and a sequence of slurs. "But maybe he was saving the world! You don't know that!" That's your comment. And that's demagogy. For the purposes of this community and this game, I don't care about the personal circumstances of the person that put those messages. That's not up for Riot to solve. Not for us. What we can do, is to keep that people away from this game. Don't bring your demagogy trying to compare a depressed person enjoying a game with an online harasser trying to make life miserable for others in a game. No, the second one lost the right to enjoy the game. And that is not hypocrisy. That is just fair.

Stop defending this behavior. Stop saying "but what if." Stop pretending that there could be things we are missing from our limited perspective of the issue. Nobody killed anybody in self defense because their life was threatened and could only use the last resource of lethal force. No. There was a series of unacceptable comments. And that's it. It doesn't matter if they are a response to previous comments. He didn't have to write them. Stop.

macromite1 votes

ok then, I will now do you the service of revealing to you the errors you have made. I shall remain impartial of my judgement of you, to only judge you as you would yourself, had you been in another shoes viewing this.

First, You, the one sticking with nothing but emotion in your words, are a demagogue, here. Not me, I've been staying rationally, and never threw any false claims as you have.

Second, you may have said if, but your meaning was not so. you could have not mentioned being ugly or having no friends, and you did anyway

Third, By the logic of not needing circumstances, then you to need to be punished for that. The punishment you chose was being banned.

Fourth, you are adding meaning to my comment in a place where there was none.

Fifth, that is hypocrisy, because you are unwilling to accept your responsibility, or is saying that behind someones back different?

Sixth, In my comment I was never pretending anything, I was stating a fact.

Seventh, saying nobody killed anybody in self defense is false. death is death.

Eighth, were yours more acceptable?

stop? why? you still haven't even answered my first question. I shall ask it again

what is evil?

TBakes8 votes

You are derailing a conversation regarding the toxicity of the player displayed by the OP. Regardless of your view on the existential question of "what is evil?", the evidence shows the Hecarim player making three death threats and using a racial slur twice, among a litany of cursing/profanity/aggression. I believe this is an unacceptable use of the chat function. The player is not helping his team in any way by communicating these messages to them. In fact, he is actively creating a hostile environment for his team. I would be surprised to find someone who would find this behavior acceptable or tolerable. Do you agree with his method of communicating? Is this something that you would have us tolerate? What is the good in this behavior? What is he accomplishing for his team by sending these messages? Even if you remove the violence in his words, he is using chat to spam information of no relevance to his team winning or losing. I fail to see any perspective in which this specific circumstance is anything but violence, profanity, and misconduct. Perhaps we should review the Summoner's Code: http://gameinfo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/game-info/get-started/summoners-code/

Nah, bro. Stuff like that should never be said.

We, as a community, have failed to preserve our integrity if the victims are not expected to interpret such vile comments seriously.

Space Bum2 votes

We? This is a free to play online game with a chat system, this is to be expected. A huge percentage of the community never shows up on these boards and does not know or care about anyone's feelings. It had been said time and again, that there are inherit ways to play this game and certain etiquette that go along with certain roles (don't kill jungle camps that the Jungler is working on killing. Ect....) However to a large number of people this game might as well be "Angry Birds" there is no way to tackle this outside of removing the chat system. You can't make people give a shit, just like you can't ban them before they say these things.

Be outraged, but understand this is not something that will ever stop.

Jayeto4 votes

you do realize LoL has been awarded most toxic community for a reason right? other games ive (or even most other people) played doesnt even come close to the toxic levels of LoL. doesnt matter if the game is PtP, BtP, or FtP there is no reason to be like that EVER and should never be considered the norm.

Space Bum2 votes

You live in a world of fairytales.

Jayeto2 votes

not really since ive seen this not happen in other games and if it does its rare and the person gets dealt with pretty fast usually. LoL is just a bigger number of players but also has the highest level of toxicity since they really dont have the man power to deal with it all (which is odd considering how much this company makes...)

You forgot to cross off the names in the honor/report list. If you get players like this player, just ignore them and work together with the rest of the team. Stay polite and positive and at the end of the, report them and leave a comment in the report describing their behavior in game. Doing so, should result in them never being on your team again. This way you never have to play with said rude players in the future.

Keep positive, not everyone in this game are so rude. :)

Ive been playing league for a few years... and even with this tribunal system it hasn't helped in the slightest with the decline in quality human to human communication. its like we forget our fellow brethern in the game are just as stupid or useless as us, or have bad days, or just rude in general... but some things ive witnessed can almost be word crimes. if you asked me before league what a word crime was I couldn't tell you since in grade 10 english, i got my english license... but some people have made it clear that the right to freedom of speech is abused waaaay more often in this game than in any game i have ever been a participant... and I played halo 2. raping noobs was about as bad as it got... and that doesn't seem as bad considering what that means. league community needs a reminder somehow to not be so callus and hateful to eachother since we are all just some dork behind a screen... its like society has made us hate our selves, and we take it out on eachother. I bet that this game has caused a large amount of suicides or at least the thought more often than any other game.

I am 34 and been on the internet since the first dial ups came out. The fact that you and I can tolerate online harassment doesn't mean everybody can, and more important, it doesn't mean that everybody should tolerate it. It takes only so much to bring someone with depression down. If you say those horrible things, you are a horrible evil and ignorant person and you are actually putting other people in danger with that behavior.

And please don't come now saying that "people with depression shouldn't play LoL then" because I am not in the mood to educate people about how other people shouldn't have to stop enjoying things and enjoying anything in their lives just because some morons can't control themselves.

But... people with depression shouldn't be playing a game that they should know by now to be... Less than friendly.

I suffer from depression, and when it gets worse I don't go and play games like LoL with people, or if I do I mute everyone from the get go. Maybe I've had it long enough to know how to avoid certain situations when I need to, but it just seems silly for the advice "If you are depressed, don't go into a place where people will harass you for ANYTHING" to be looked down on. Do you also dislike telling people with shellfish allergies not to eat shellfish?

I'm not advocating the threats to random strangers through a video game (or through anything, really), but if you are in a position where you are considering suicide (or hell, anything close to that), it never helps to go to a place where the attitudes of players range from "What's up everyone, dance party mid" to "I WILL KILL EVERYTHING THAT YOU LOVE, YOU WORTHLESS SLIMEBALL" and just kinda roll the dice without any precautions.

So please, educate me on why I think this view point is wrong, I'd love to here about it.

You are wrong because you can do whatever you think it is best for you. You can play and mute everyone or you can hide in a cave and avoid human interaction forever if that's what you think it is best for you. And that is ok. But that doesn't mean that everyone else has to or should. People with depression and mental/steem issues should be able to enjoy the things they enjoy and to live life normally. You can't just tell them to not get out of their houses because they might meet people who are mean. Instead, we have to do our best to eradicate that behavior so everybody can live much safer and happier. We don't end bullying at school by not sending our children to school. We end it by educating and by spreading awareness.

If there was a dangerous ally where there was a high likelihood of getting mugged, someone who was particularity vulnerable or gave off a victim vibe would be an idiot to use said ally. This does not mean that we should not attempt to improve safety in said region, but in the mean time, and possibly indefinitely it would only be ethically to warn people, in particularly vulnerable people to avoid said area.

There is far more to life than League so if some people are unable to experience it due to mental health risks it is unfortunate but it is not the end of the world or even a particularly great misfortune. We should certainly attempt to improve League as much as possible but in the meantime we can take precautions. As for the schooling example, with the current state of the US school system, if parents have the time and resources to do so it is far better to just switch to homeschooling or some other option. They should still support positive change, but there is absolutely no reason they should compromise their own children while cleaning up a serious mess.

No. You can see this same behavior pretty much everywhere on the internet. Are you suggesting that people with depression should stay away from the internet and isolated from the rest of the world so they don't risk their health by not interacting with anyone? Certainly that's not the answer. Stop saying the victims to go somewhere else, to play something different, to not dress so "provocatively", to not live life. It is not the victim's fault. Lets address this issue and start taking step to eradicate these online harassers from places like this one.

WhiteGuyWannaBe1 votes

It is possible you are reading more into my reply then is actually there or it is possible you just have a unrealistic view of the world in general. I am certainly for taking measures to improve safety for all users under all circumstances (providing there is some regard for individual freedom) but unless people enjoy being victimized they should either avoid the risky circumstances or better prepare themselves for such encounters. They also owe it to others to raise awareness of the situation and everyone else should work to improve the situation, but if something poses a significant threat, the first logical step is to isolate one from the threat.

As for the assertions that similar behavior is found everywhere on the internet, there is certainly some truth to that, but League and other massively popular games tend to be cesspools of sociopathic behavior, far worse then most other games or sites. If someone actually has a mental condition which would make it risky for them to play league there is an incredible array of other option for them to use until said problems are dealt with, if that ever happens.

Sorry for not responding sooner, but I've been quite busy lately, I would love to discuss this further as this disagreement seems to be largely related to personal responsibility and agency vs what might be termed social responsibility, but unfortunately I will be away from the internet for the next few months. Feel free to respond for the benefit of any other readers, but by the time I get back this thread is going to be long since buried.

I upvote this for great justice. I think Riot needs to plant this to the players' mind: If they are not capable of acting decent, then they are lower than trash and deserves to be humiliated like hell. Don't just give penalties like bans or such, but instead let them play... and let everyone else knows that this guy is toxic and a laughing stock, like putting a 'kick me' sign on their butt. Allies or enemies do so. Just make their playing experience HORRIBLE. That is the kind of punishment I think would hit right on spot....

And yeah, I prefer to play with feeders than toxic people.

I just had a Nasus top, who I ganked for early cause he was against a Vlad, who then afterwards would continually try to fight vlad and then just get out sustained cause he started Doran's Shield then rushed a Tri Force. Didn't even bother with stacking his Q.

So even though I had just ganked for him and both mid and bot needed help (cause every lane always needs loads of help in this ridiculous silver ELO), he then spam pinged on top of me and said I HAD to gank for him again. I calmly explained to him that all he had to do was farm and build MR and that I had to gank the other lanes. Bot lane was after all already flaming me as well, cause welcome to silver

"Just getting your second buff and recalling after a successful gank top side? YOU SHOULD HAVE GANKED BOT TWICE ALREADY! HERPY DERPA DERP!"

Anyway, instead of doing the normal thing and playing safe, warding, and waiting for me to make the rounds of winning every single lane for my team on my own, he then says the typical "if you don't gank in 2 mins I'm afk feeding at 20." My Zed was luckily the only other mature one on the team and tried to back me up, but by doing so Nasus flamed him for a bit as well until Zed gave up and muted the kid. So, I go to gank bot and we get one kill and then a dragon, Zed even managed to force the enemy Talon off the tower so we head mid to force it down quickly. Meanwhile top Nasus over extends chasing Vlad past the minion waves for no reason and Olaf shoes up, then instead of flashing out and running from the lvl 5 Olaf he tries to 1v2 them since he was lvl 6. He dies and preceeds to rage up a storm like I have not seen in a very long time, all directed at me personally and how I'm an awful jungler and he was for sure just going to troll and feed now, all cause I wasn't there for the counter gank... and got a kill, dragon, and tower with my team instead....

He then continued to do this for a few more minutes, just none stop harassing, it was so bad bot lane even shut up and stopped harassing me, cause I was doing perfectly fine and they didn't have much reason too anymore and Nasus was dong so anyway. I then muted him, told him I would, and I guess after finally realizing I wasn't just saying it he started to feed on purpose cause "my jungler was completely useless!" As he put in the end game chat.

So I feel your pain, and only the enemy Vlad stuck around to report him with me, even my own team all left instantaneously, so I doubt that childish Nasus will get enough reports to warrant a look, at least not that match, so for now he's prob going to get away with it.

People are just generally pathetic, and for some reason this game brings out the most pathetic side a person can muster. No idea why, but it's all too common and not nearly punished enough.
