Advice for toplaning

How does one find success in toplane? I tend to play Irelia (my favorite champion) and Fiora sometimes. I was told that Garen can help you see the problems in your game-play so I've been dabbling in that lately. I've been playing top a while now with mixed success I can get to gold doing this but I can never really go beyond so I figured it's something I'm not doing.

Is it about TP ganking? Is it about killing your laner and pushing? Controlling rift? I have a lot of trouble with tanks since it feels like I can't trade with them without losing or getting ganked; but I feel if I play too passively in lane I am not doing anything to sway the game in my favor. End up getting impatient and dying then I just sit top and mope.

Mid game I end up just trying to push if my team is doing badly since I don't feel I can contribute much if they are behind.

I have so much trouble with these champions.

I just ban Illaoi at the moment. The other 4 are manageable in their own way, but Illaoi is the most frustrating lane I think I've ever played against since release day Darius. But I've just gotten into playing Jax again and it is SO unfun to play Jax into Illaoi, everyone else I can deal with.

Gnar is countered by Tabi + some MR, or someone who can all in on his mini. Nasus, take someone who doesnt rely on auto attacks and can bully the lane Maokai, annoying, but hes just gonna CC you a lot, you can free farm against him Not sure why Renekton is on your list, he is in a REALLY bad place right now as far as top laners go.

As far as my playstyle goes, it depends on the matchup, if I can push it in, Ill shove in, go ward enemy jungle, get river control, watch for TP chances. If I'm losing or down, sometimes its just river control and don't fall too far behind, teleport to dragon fights, help jungler get Rift herald early if possible.
