In my experience I don't get what Urgot is; he's a lane bully and he scales up to be a tanky almost hyper carry that carry a game in the right hands. He is oppressive but doesn't really fall off like Renekton. I don't understand what this champion's deal is! I'm less scared of Darius/Riven/Irelia then a decent Urgot.
Im an Urgot main, so hopefully this helps a little:
If you are locked on by Purge, run into a bush. Stack armour and run away from him in a straight line to prevent his passive. If he misses an E or locks onto a minion, PUNISH HIM. Garen countere Urgot fairly well ans Tryndamere is the hard counter
Long cooldowns, slow, short range. Basic attack oriented, completely dependent on hitting skillshots to deal reliable damage to any one enemy.
Weak to %max hp damage, and displacement-type crowd control. Can't usually deal with skirmishers, as he can't reliably stick to mobile opponents and suffers from no innate sustain.
He can't scratch his legs with his litlle arms.
Jax and Trundle can beat him. Trundle can take his damage and defensive stats.
jax is really good against him

He's boring.
mobility and anti shielding.
so aatrox should work against him.
I hate his new W, with conq he just locks on and he does 1000 damage in a second while draintanking thanks to conq.
Just ban him every game, best counter ever.
A lot of his dominance has to do with the notion that he has high base damage and high base armor on a ranged champion. As a result, he eats the tradtional round of melee tops absolutely alive for the most part.
He's far less oppressive against AP champs, as his base magic resist is not great. 
in particular absolutely wrecks him. She's as oppressive against him as he is against most traditional toplaners.
Other mages are good as well, including lots of mages from the midlane who you wouldn't ordinarily take top if you're willing to switch it up - 
all do very nice damage against him with the range needed to stay safe.

Back in AD/tank world, both

become unkillable as soon as they're on one or two armor items and possibly a

is pure physical damage and struggles hard against super-armor. This works with

If you're really adventurous, you can even take 
into him. She will just zap him to bits as soon as she's on 
, while healing up all his damage with a smile and hasting herself out of his skillshots. I will occasionally do this just to take oppressive players like me down a peg or two. :)
hes oppressive. That infinite shield is a r%%%%%ed mechanic. Also, too easy to proc grasp on him and benefits from it more than anyone in the game.
Playing passively and outscaling him.
Urgot is like heim and illaoi. He thrives when you do all of the hard work and engage into him, where he can flip you over and fk u up. But he's really, really fkin shit at getting onto you himself (unless you're another juggernaut). By far the biggest tilter for an urgot is when the enemy plays smart and doesn't suicide into you like a regular player. This stops you from losing, so about winning. You outscale and fken destroy him. He will become an ult bot (and his ult is shit if he cant hit who he wants or his team doesnt focus who he hits)
