Because what's being canceled isn't the auto attack, it's the ending frames of animation of her Q being canceled, and those frames are after the damage had been dealt. As for her attacks, the damage had already been dealt by her autos when she used her Q, and a lot of abilities in league reset ending animation and reset the auto timer such as Leona's Q, Renektons W, etc.

I'm not saying it's fair, because I don't think it is, but I don't think it's comparable to a ranged champs bullet from an auto disappearing mid flight because they moved before damage had been done.

You can "cancel" a ranged auto attack before it does damage, as long as the projectile is already in the air. The only two cases that do not follow that is kalista's autos will not hit if she loses vision and if you die. If the damage isn't dealt then you canceled the animation too soon.

Although I think they should change the death one, there is no reason for the damage to not be dealt if the projectile is already traveling.
