If somebody doesn't like the rework of their champion...

...Shouldn't they have the right to refund said champion for free? I mean, it's no longer the character they decided to buy. This would exclude people that buy the character AFTER the rework was announced. You know, just to avoid freeloaders that buy characters 2 weeks before their rework and then refund them.

Nope, League is an ever evolving game. They are forced to change champions to keep their game modern and good. They couldn't just leave Poppy or Taric or Sion as they were because they were shit, binary and boring for most players to play with and against. It's not fair to them that, for your benefit, they must pour resources to change something to keep ratings average (So already we have a situation where they are increasing expenses for the purpose of keeping revenue even. i.e an efficiency loss) on top of having to offer refunds to anyone who doesn't like their new work?

Also, even if you play 1 champion from the moment you download the game until the moment that champion gets a rework, it's not "your" champion. We as players don't get to pick what champions are "ours" and therefore dictate special treatment. Because if they grant your refund for your main, they have to allow ANYONE that asks to get a refund for that champion. Riot didn't rework your champion. They reworked their own champion, and it's up to you whether you continue playing it or not. It's an ever-evolving game, and as much as we all want to keep our cheesy AP sion builds and DFGarens, the reworks they do are a response to public outcry. Your champion is being reworked because your fellow players asked for it. You don't get a refund because you don't like it.

Also, Riot wants to encourage playrates for new content. Mains of a reworked champions are some of the best subjects because they know how that champion is meant to feel, they can properly identify the key differences and key playstyle changes more than regular players. They don't want Sion mains looking at the new kit, not seeing retarded AP ratios and CC, and just dropping the champion. They want you to play, look at what is good and what isn't in relation to old sion, and see what parts of these arguments hold validity. Mains complaining Sion couldn't off build an essentially counterplay-less cheese build mid anymore and have had their fun ruined weren't taken seriously. Those that identified the change in tankiness between old sion passive-health stack-shield-ult and new sion shield-healthstack and how the different CC changed his playstyle were.

I use Sion because he was regarded as useless until rework. Then all of the mains came out of the woodwork hating Riot for ruining their AP mid fun. If you weren't around for old Sion, good. It was just a one-sided laning phase.

Okay but that didn't happen with Galio. He feels like a completely different champ now with a totally new personality, and they took like 90 IQ points from him. I liked his slow, methodical playstyle he used to have, and now he's super aggro. I'm the first to admit he was pretty binary, and his old W was OP as hell, but his new kit just feels awkward, and his VU is obnoxiously bright, just like all the other demacian hero champs.

Eh? Wouldn't it be best just to keep the champion and try to get all the champions eventually? I don't find it that hard to build up some IP to grab a certain champion you want.

"the right"? no that is definitely not a 'right'. lol Would it be nice? sure. Does riot have any responsibility to do so? I don't think so.

"Shouldn't they have the right". Never did I imply they have the right. I said they should. God you people, stop twisting sentences around to have something to defend.

You're literally asking for it to be a right. You just said so again. Not sure how I am 'twisting sentences'. Personally, I never meant to imply any tense about it. Past, present, or future. I do not think that should have been, should be, or is a right.

"Shouldn't that be a right"? No it shouldn't. (future) "Is it a right?" No it isn't. (present) "Was it ever a right?" No, it never was. (past)

Does that clear up a rather straight forward sentence so you can understand? Certainly isn't me twisting sentences to be offended. For sure.

I don't see you returning your iPhone just because you got a system update

System updates don't change the phone itself. That's a really weird example. If you want a phone example, how about "You have an iPhone, and suddenly Samsung is in front of your door, grabs your phone and exchanges it for a Samsung phone."

The thing is that there are a ton of features that are removed or added on updates. A lot of GUIs are drastically altered during updates (my one phone has seen 3 new GUI styles since I got it). A lot of times even system updates will grant/revoke/add new permissions for apps to use and potentially abuse. All of which are about as much as reworks.

The product is the same champion or phone. How it works has changed its software ultimately just shiny pixels on your screen. This fact is what keeps me from being to emotionally invested in this game

Feel free to ask for continual improvements or even revertion
Speaking from a S1 Mordekaiser main who definitely didn't agree with the Rework

I have a Samsung, and when I got a system update, it jacked up my keyboard and my email. I hated the new OS, because I'm a lefty and the new email update was clearly designed with right handers in mind, as all of the functions were on the side, and the autocorrect feature on the new keyboard was far, far, far inferior to my old autocorrect feature. These are both prime examples of an OS update completely overhauling aspects of my phone I preferred, and leaving me out to dry when they were nixed. I still have my phone and have learned to deal with these irritations, but just saying, it's still a very similar situation.

While Nahui already gave a pretty good reason below, I'll also list another reason: people abused this for free refunds, keeping the champ and getting RP. What was meant to be a goodwill thing from Riot was used by people who'd picked up the champ, played them once, and never touched them again.
