PSA: Jungle Camps only give the buff to the First smite

PiRoScOuT··25 votes·2,425 views

I was in a game as aatrox, and there was a mundo top lane with smite who was going cinderhulk. I started krugs, he smote first and I did then, but didn't get the buff. It turned out ok because aatrox sustain, just letting you know because some junglers wouldn't have survived that camp, or the rest of the jungle.

A dirty trick is to run up to the enemy red camp and smite it without taking it during the first clears.

If you're lucky, they'll get executed >:D

I never depend on the red buff heal for survival, Mostly because none of the junglers I play get that low to die without the heal, but also because I do this to too many enemies to fall for it. Shouldn't there be some indicator if the buff is available?

I never have smite for my first red buff. I's always on CD by that time.. I simply don't need the health.

There is. If you look closely red buff gives off green bubbles if it's bonus is available and blue buff gives off blue bubbles, but you can only see them if you have smite. IDK about the smaller camps tho.

Smaller camps have similar bubbles. I think it was pink-purple for Gromp, but I don't remember for others.

People like you are the reason I have my top laner ward red.

DorkunedAuras1 votes

And they never do it. Just a few games ago, I told my ryze to ward blue (I was starting krugs-red). He stands under turret for the first 2 minutes, and I get to blue to find it mysteriously missing...

But honestly, I think the best strat is to just stand over the wall and smite the krug as it's almost dead to deny lvl 2, which can often times screw over their buff clear, and maybe even stop them from getting lvl 2 at all before backing, and they can't get a jungle item off of half a camp, essentially delaying them by several minutes. Or they could be playing warwick and not give a shit.

Why do people stand at their tower and never guard the jungle?

It's easy. If the jungler heads toward your jungle solo (if it's the entire team, just gtfo. We're junglers, not tyrants), you throw out a skillshot or something. Unless they're Fiddlesticks, that will deter them because they can't clear a camp solo if they're at half health or something. So they'll leave and get a leash, or they'll recall if they take enough warning shots to the face.

And these same people bitch about never getting ganks, yet they can't show their jungler a simple courtesy because standing at tower doing absolutely nothing is what pros do (oh wait, they don't).

I mean, if there's a Blitz/Thresh/Nidalee, that's a whole different matter.

holy shit, does this actually work? like theres no buff reset? i.e., it has 1 charge of a buff, and once you smite it, even if they smite it 10 minutes later, they won't give buff?

it seems like a giant waste of time haha but so amazingly troll

Yeah, i do it with cinderhulk/Proxy Singed often... if I don't have enough hp to steal the camp, ill just take the buff.

I definitely have to try this when I go top with smite again!

Ramuhdo1 votes

Yup, it makes it so they won't heal. I tend to do this as Evelynn and then hide nearby, so when they get low enough and Smite the red buff for HP, I swoop in for easy kills.

wow I never knew about this that is awesome

Some people wanna watch the world burn.

I already know- that's why I grab summoner 11 with Alistar. I can invade, and steal enemy buff for myself or even get the kill. It interrupts the enemy jungle hard- and let's me support better with Gromp or Krug buff.. well Gromp because I only grab smite when I'm blue team..

IllllllIIIIlllll1 votes

won't that leave your adc to get zoned out of the first two waves of minions?

Mister Modesty1 votes

I let my ADC know to play safe. And when I get back at 2nd wave, my ADC is usually level 2 and I can usually scare off the enemy from getting too much xp after that. If I manage to steal Gromp kill from enemy jungle, I won't have to worry about him coming to my lane too early- plus I level up myself. When I get back to lane- enemy jungle is lvl 1, enemy adc/sup are lvl 1- my jungle, me and my ADC are all lvl 2. But, I have come back to lane to find a beat up Jinx. But, I also got a first blood on a dying Evelyn at her own blue buff- after I used smite on the sentinel (she started Gromp- and I didn't want to play too risky so I warded blue instead)

has it always worked like this for forever and always?

I've been playing smite mid morde for a LONG time and i'd always "take" the buff, but my junglers never said anything. i was under the assumption that you got the buffs simply for smiting, regardless of how many there were. But then one day after a patch all of a sudden someone QQ'd about it. n ever did it again after that (smite first) but i was like "wtf is this kid talking about?" for the game till i saw there was only one buff

Mid laners haven't had to leash for a while, so unless you were helping wolves or raptors I don't think it would have mattered, unless it was in the late game.

Koldheartedjsp1 votes

well i'd have a useless smite for the first 30 seconds (smite #2 would be up for cannon so smite #1 was "useless.")

So I'd always use first smite for my jungler, doing it instantly (i even said "morde want poison buff" half of the time with nobody ever saying dont) then going to lane.

That isn't true with the Red and Blue buffs. Smiting Red gives you health, but the red buff goes to whoever kills it. Smiting blue gives you mana, but the blue buff goes to whoever last hits.

I ment the smite buffs, not the relic things that spin below the champion, such as poison, the vision, the ghost of lassie...

IllllllIIIIlllll1 votes

oh wow... I never knew that. thanks for the tip

RottedApples1 votes

found that out the hard way when my mid laner leashed my gromp after level 1 shenanigans. Neither of us knew this would happen though.

Made jungle Kayle a lot harder than it already is for the first clear.

Working as intended.

It's useful to know when invading an enemy at their red. At times, it can be worthwhile to smite the camp early (even if it means you don't steal the buff) to deny the enemy jungler the heal. That makes them much easier to kill, since many champions are pretty low by the time they finish their second buff. You'll get red buff for killing them, anyways.
