Riot, Why have you allowed everyone to ruin my favorite character in League? And how to fix it.

Ekko He has been my main, in North America and EU West ever since the day he came out.

I've never complained about buffs or nerfs to him at all and I have never once complained about anything that has been done to him, but Tank Ekko? This is taking it too far.

Ever since release I have played and experimented with Ekko and over all 3 of my accounts I have 230k Mastery Points on Ekko .

Since Tank Ekko came out he just hasn't been as fun for me. To see my main be ruined almost every game I play, and I can't even play him when I want to because of how much he is banned because of this. I even have a student, who I introduced into league and he plays Ekko a lot as well, but he can't deal with this either.

It doesn't matter where he is placed, top, mid, or jungle. He is always Tank, and to be frank it's broken.

How about you lower base damage on Q, Passive, and E, but increase the AP ratio on all 3? Or lower the ult's base healing and give it a bigger AP ratio. There are simple ways to fix the problem that is tank Ekko , just switch around a few number and it will be fine. Just please, I beg of you dont allow this to continue riot.

Tank Ekko is broken because he doesn't take tactics, where normal Ekko you need to focus on positioning, and if you want to dive in you have to predict and land your W. You need to manage mana, etc. This tank Ekko is the opposite, doesn't need to manage mana, and doesn't need to position himself well.

I was already pissed about academy Ekko being green (my fave color) and have no particle changes, but this is just too much. Thank you riot, and everyone reading, Please fix this I beg of you.

Those changes wouldn't really fix the problem.

ATM Ekko's QWER burst does ~1100 damage @18+300% AP, where an average QWER burst does ~1000 damage @18+220% AP.

While Ekko's bases are marginally higher than that of an average champion, they aren't reall noteworthy or particularly high. Especially for a melee champion. His damage scalings are substantially better than that of an average champion already: especially when you consider his shield/heal utility scalings, so it's not like Ekko lacks incentives to build AP.

Ekko's problem is less about scalings and more about his kit in general. In that he has a tanky DPS figher kit like that of MonkeyKing Vi XinZhao that can erase squishies, but clearly favors building bulky.

. A 500 HP shield or heal is effectivly a 1000 HP shield or heal with 50% damage reduction.

. An AoE dive onto the enemy team heavily favors being tanky enough to use such a skill as an initiation.

. A monster slow/stun allows Ekko's allies to effectively have more damage (due to opponents sitting in range longer) and more defense (due to opponents being disabled). With tanky CDR this is exceptional, as AP insta-burst any CC is pretty useless if you just kill something before they can react.

. 3rd-hit AA bonus is great if you're either bulky enough to stick next to opponents for an extended time or you have enough range to not be punished, where it's awful on a melee glass-cannon reliant on mobility to survive: as it heavily telegraphs your movements and prevents you from constantly moving, slowing and almost rooting Ekko next to his target.

Ekko's blink is quite solid to a melee-squish play-style, but otherwise the rest of his kit is the kit of a tanky DPS fighter with the mechanics of a tanky DPS fighter and the general needs of a tanky DPS fighter.

Even with great AP itemization: Ekko's kit heavily favors dealing double damage by building tanky and lasting long enough to deal twice the damage over building damage to deal double damage.

Anyways: Ekko's issues run much deeper than bases and scaling.

There are currently base damage nerfs on PBE

Which won't do anything to fix Ekko's tank issues due to reasons above.

It's not like Riot is flawless in their decision making and perfectly balances champions with their PBE changes either.

The mid-season mage itemization changes might actually weaken tank-Ekko by pulling Ekko more in the AP direction and less in the mega-tank direction, but at the moment itemizing for AP burst is so much worse than itemizing tanky DPS I don't see any level of base/scaling changes to Ekko pushing him out of his tanky state. Even if he lost half his QWER base damages, his kit would still work pretty well as a tanky DPS AD leaning thing.

I am not even sure the itemization changes will do that. In fact, I have the sneaking suspicion that the changes could make tanky DPS Ekko even more obnoxious.

Atm, three things stand out in that regard for me:

  • Hextech Gunblade: Ekko has a lot of single-target damage, even as tanky DPS. Also, he auto-attacks a lot, and with another 300 damage nuke, could more reliably burst a squishy.
  • Abyssal Sceptre: Tank Ekko's current most successful builds have Abyssal as 5th item. Considering that new Abyssal will have the missing 10% CdR for Ekko, and up to 5 more penetration vs champions...
  • Catalyst and its upgrades: Gain 15% damage taken as mana. Gain 15% of mana spent as HP, upgraded to 20% for upgrades. Do I really need to say more?

Actually, it is not as simple, after all.

There is only so much that you can move power away from base damages into ratios. High AP ratios also result in a champion that is very prone to snowballing.

Exactly what is on PBE right now :

"Parallel Convergence (W) Passive base damage lowered to 3% missing HP from 5% missing HP Passive AP ratio increased to 1% per 33 AP from 1% per 50 AP [NEW] Passive does minimum 15 damage to minions

Phase Drive (E) Base damage lowered to 40/65/90/115/140 from 50/80/110/140/170 AP ratio increased to .4 from .2

CONTEXT: These are nerfs aimed at tanky Ekko builds, taking down his base damage but increasing his AP ratios"

I got this from surrenderat20.net ; those changes are most likely to go live next patch
