So... Runes Died
I get the impression that there are players out there who really like runes reloaded. Let me tell you why I don't like them (is this a vent)?
- Clarity I look at my collection, hover over a page and I see things like 'Arcane Comet', 'Manaflow Band', 'Transcendence'. It was always a problem for masteries, but masteries used to be low-impact (that was before RIOT introduced keystones). Back in the day, when runes were impactful, you could look at a rune page and easily see what you were getting: 9 armor, 12 magic resist, ... I mean it was clear what you had. You didn't have to memorize a bunch of descriptions.
- Flexibility In runes reloaded, you can't get what you want. You have to choose a cookie cut option. Let's say you want Manaflow band. Well, now you are locked into a sorcery tree. Let's say you want Grasp of the Undying. Well, now you better be picking up three more resolve tree options. In the old system, I could decide to pick up stats in the preferred section.. or I could pick up slightly worse ones in a different section. This meant I had the flexibility to play around with more schemes. But in the runes reloaded, I can't do that. I have to pick a cookie cut.
- Customization In the old runes system, I could decide how much mana regen I wanted. I wasn't forced to choose Manaflow band or... not Manaflow band. This meant I could really tailor my runes to my champion the way I wanted them to be. Of course, I said what I didn't like about rune reforged while RIOT was working on redesigning runes. My feedback in that regard is not new.
I realize that some players like the idea of quickly changing their 'runes' (ahem 'masteries') in champion select and that maybe some players don't care about Customization and Flexibility because they never really liked the rune system in the first place. Maybe that dissatisfaction helped fuel the movement towards this new rune structure that absolutely sucks (imo). Look, what this comes down to is that runes died. If I have anything that I am ranting about it's that runes died. They were not reborn as something new and exciting. They exited the game and some people were glad to see them go, but I wasn't one of them... and now you know why.
