Usually the best way is to farm.
You end up being able to stat check people you farm better than until you get to the point where people farm as much as you. At that point, decisions actually become important and you can improve on that front by simply adapting.
Even if you're jungling, afk farm until you see an opportunity. Don't try too hard to force something to happen. Get a feel for how reliable a play will be if you try to make it.
That said, don't spend the entire game afk farming if it doesn't allow you to carry. There is a middle-ground to be found, but keeping up in farm is an EXTREMELY good baseline to have to reduce the variability of your performances, which is why I suggest it.
Vi is a great champ for climbing into or even past gold.
(or
instead)
, preferably with scaling mr/armor runes.
No, it doesn't hold up as well past gold, due to how squishy you end up, but it can easily carry you out of gold.
The mix of HP and damage, along with all of the shred, allows you to easily stat-check most champions.
Just remember to auto in between abilities to proc W as much as you can. auto E auto Q auto E, etc. Try to save your R for when somebody uses an escape OR you're about to be CC'd while going all-in on someone. Don't use it to engage if you can help it.
Skarner's another great stat-check. Amumu, J4, Nocturne, and Olaf work pretty well on that front too.
All of them can force fights, are tanky if built right, and deal good damage at the same time, in addition to clearing pretty well.
