Why does Gangplank show up when filtering by "Support" in the Client?

Out of all the people who can work as low income. I believe GP might be the worst. :P ANyone know? Was this a pre rework thing and they never updated him?

Prior to Gangplank's rework, he was a pretty legit support pick.

Iceborn/wits passive abusing was so much fun. I miss GP support

That was many, many seasons before his rework. That's a relic from when there basically wasn't a meta.

Something like: Gangplank item 2303 item 1306 item 3025 item 3065 item 3742 item 3075 Is actually a legitimately strong support. Iceborne Q pokes and slows the enemy, Cure Scurvy lets you body block Thresh hooks and be K, and his ultimate lets you babysit your ADC while still having global presence. Make sure to bring Grasp of the Undying to improve your poke + sustain since Parrley counts as a melee autoattack. Also Bandit grants the full gold value for Q poking, so he has more income than other supports.

It's not very good anymore, because a lot of gangplanks power comes from getting his special coin things. To get the most you need to waveclear a bunch

Still more viable than some stuff considered borderline meta, like support Nunu.

True story, Nunu is/was actually supposed to be a viable support: point-n-click slow, allied AS buff.

I'm playing a bunch of Nunu support at the moment. It's not too bad. Tanky with good damage on his E and lots of lane sustain. Pair him with MF and his E is brutal.

I thought i was the only one who did this. I did ti back when OLD GP was still a thing tho so Raise Morale was pretty nifty as a bonus.

After the rework tho, it just feels kinda sub-par because you cant get the necessary Upgrades for your ulti.

I did it with a wits instead of a spirit visage, and of course the eye wasn't an option back then

Huh, I was looking for more silly support picks. Might try this out when I get home tonight.

Holy shit this is genius

  1. Because tags have absolutely nothing to do with what lane a champion belongs in.
  2. Old GP had an AoE buff for team mates that gave them movespeed and another stat I can no longer remember.

  1. I understand this bit. However, it reflects what Riot THOUGHT for what they'd be good.
  2. I remember that now. Thnx

No, it didn't, the "support" champion tag has ALWAYS meant "this champion has abilities that benefit his team," not "we think this champion works well in a duo lane"

Hethalean1 votes

Like Heimerdinger also being a support? I've always found the role assignments confusing. haha

Yes, Heimerdinger is obviously a garbage duo laner but his passive gives free hp regen to anyone standing near him.

Makes sense.

Also an AoE stun and body blocking with turrets.

Previous gangplank had raise morale which was a pretty-supporty thing.

Nowadays I guess he's still got poke and his barrels slow, but not exactly a meta pick.

Nanuk Pihoqahiak3 votes

I'd imagine it's because his ult is crazy amounts of utility + his ability to poke.

Sire Hippington3 votes

It was pre rework, back when he had an aoe speed+ad buff, and his ult had full power without grinding silver serpents, so he actually was playable as support/jungler/suportive toplaner. his old passive slow also helped peeling/chaseing, and the base damage made him more scarry in longer fights without much damage items. Now it's go crit or go home with tons of farming...

Only Play Darius3 votes

Because he used to be a secondary support. He had an AOE AD/MS steroid on his E which was actually pretty strong before the nerfs. His old ult also had the rapid fire from the start so it was essentially a permaslow.

Mecha MaIphite2 votes

Well he brings a lot of peel to his ADC.

:^)

The Deckowner1 votes

Probably because pre-rework tank gp support kinda works He has q for poke/cs and his attackspeed/movement speed buff was similar to ww and nunu w.

TheHurricaneGamr1 votes

Prior to Gp's rework, his secondary was actually support. It shows up in his wiki history.

Jatt did it

GP supp is actually secret op right now. item 3303 + bandit mastery gives 18 gold per Q, even if u only q once every 10 sec, thats 180g per minute, if u can manage this for 5 min, thats 900, if u can stay in lane longer, thats up to 2k gold just from spelltheif and bandit, not to mention the passive gold gen from both item and mastery. it's tehcnically possible to leech twice this amount if you can sustain your mana and are able to Q on CD.

sell spelltheif when u need the item slot.

doesn't work if your adc is stupidly shoving lane all game.
