Why champion.gg isn't the most accurate for stats.

Champion.gg - Kog'Maw ADC Stats, Builds, Runes, Masteries and Counters

Title Edit: For extrapolating stats to a champion's balance state I'm stating you can't extrapolate a champion's balance based just off of champion.gg's winrate stat ALONE.

So on champion.gg it says Kog'Maw has an overall winrate of 55%. That does kinda make sense in plat games and above but then I looked more in depth. He has the third lowest playrate of all ADC's at just under 1%. But what caught my attention is the win% by games played. All looks normal, until you look at 50-125 games played. In that group there's a 97.8% winrate. That doesn't make sense since in the piechart below the graph it says players had 50 to 125 games played in 7.5% of those games since roughly 1000 games were analyzed in the current patch, that would mean that out of those 75 games only 2 would have been lost. Champion.gg isn't going to be accurate for its stats when there's this little amount of games played on a champion and one person (I assume) skewing the data a shit ton.

its accurate data. You just have to read it right.

The low play rate means the high winrate is worthless, but that doesn't mean their data is "inaccurate". It means a persons interpretation of data is innacurate.

My title may have been off but I'm implying that you can't use it for extrapolation purposes. People will call for Kog'Maw to be gutted... again if they extrapolate the data, especially the above picture in terms of Kog'Maw's balance. And while he isn't healthy for an ADC, he's not THAT unhealthy.

ScissorsNstuff2 votes

kog really is THAT unhealthy. In a worlds tournament he did lose all but one game (against ahri) once

Best Kog NA1 votes

If you're talking about last year's worlds that was because he was played once :P (I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not though, it's the gameplay boards so it's hard to tell).

ScissorsNstuff1 votes

referring to season 2 worlds where he won all but one game which was against what would become the future meta.

You could say that kogmaw is a symbol of everything that was wrong with the old meta. While it may seem inappropriate to refer to season 2, we have been spiraling back into that meta at a rapid pace except with some critical improvements and a few... not-improvements (whats the word for this lol.. deprovements? )

season 2 worlds

how is that an accurate representation of how he is 5 years later?

read the second paragraph

Ahh that makes sense. If we don't remember history we're bound to repeat it.

Just to take a logical shortcut and tell you what kog needs before he's given a fair shake is an "artillery rework"

KogMaw Xerath Nidalee Lux Jayce Jhin Ziggs Caitlyn Ezreal Sivir

these champs have always been issues, they are either too strong in high elo or too weak in low elo. The adc ziggs thing for example, its been a real issue lately but its not completely unwelcome, riot is keeping an eye on it for now. How does one measure the advantage given by artillery spam.. its probably possible but the issue becomes how to gate its usefulness when it becomes a new stall out strategy which is toxic for the game.. the solutions tend to either make them unviable or give them some conditional compensation that works a bit too well.

Whats worse is often time the issues cant be measured through winrate, just unhappy players and boring LCS plays.

Teemo causes a similar issue

This. The problem comes from people that don't know how to interpret data, which is why so many arguments on the boards where people solely cite winrate mean absolutely nothing. That said, it's still likely not completely accurate. Riot is the only place that's going to have completely accurate data, and they also employ people that know how to read it.

That's what I meant to say, I'm half posting this as a copy paste for people who only use champion.gg's winrate only while ignoring the playrate, games reviewed, and the rest of the stats. I realize now I could've phrased the title differently, I made an edit hoping to clear up what I meant.

Dracocrash1 votes

ah yes. I agree with you in that regard.

jayce players that have 50-125 games on him have 64% win rate

those with 125 or more have 51% win rate

so how are they forgetting how to play jayce by playing more jayce?

doesn't make sens

Adding onto the winrate based on experience. How tf would this make sense http://i.imgur.com/ly6FZap.png?1

Already 4 months ago but I'd like to give my input on this interesting trend.

The reason you see winrates go down at 125+ games is because you'll find mostly 'one trick ponies' in that category. If you only play 1 champion your MMR will balance around your skill on that champion only leaving you with an eventual winrate close to 50%. People that play more different champions will have winrates excel on champions that they play relatively more often, but that does not apply if you only play one champion.

It is always helpful to cross-reference with a different source. 52.29% average winrate for the past 7 days does not sound too bad, either, and the same goes for an 58.89% for the best players - which is actually the highest among all champions classified as ADC.

Technically Twitch and Miss Fortune have a higher Winrate then Kog'Maw according to lolalytics.com. And I'm not trying to say Kog'Maw's in a healthy spot, he isn't, I'm just using him as an example to point out a flaw in extrapolating from data that has a few problems with it.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

Yeah, namely the supersmall sample size. That's actually the biggest flaw of champion.gg.

Which is why I linked LoLalytics. They analysed 16650 Kog games in the last 7 days, which is a significant sample size.

I know, this post isn't about Kog'Maw's balance, it's about how extrapolating from champion.gg's winrate stat ALONE isn't a good thing due to errors like the supersmall sample size.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

I agree with you on that.

Actually grew disappointed with champion.gg over the last few months - they seem to take longer and longer for the data analysis and have small sample sizes. That's why I rejoiced when I discovered the new data platform - and it is way more versatile than champion.gg.

Only thing I am missing is the ability to see the data from past patches, to see developments of multiple patch cycles. Hope they will implement that someday (soon).
