Serious discussion: Xayah and Rakan counter-play.

Okay hear me out, the newest champions have been revealed, Xayah and Rakan, our newest additions to the avian overlords.

This duo the first in league history, specific champion game-play interaction. Being a first, no one can predict all that well how the strategy around them will work, or how strong they will be separate.

However there is no doubt they will be much stronger together than apart, and should I or you have the misfortune of getting matched against them, I want to figure out an appropriate response to such a potentially powerful duo lane.

I gave some thoughts to counter lanes, and because my mind is pitifully lacking for ADC counter and such, I made assumptions based on there strengths and weaknesses in there kits, and how other kits could exploit that. Thats why I am reaching out to you guys and gals to help me and everyone prepare for the unstoppable hoard of players trying to test out this new duo.

Here's my thoughts: Xayah is immobile, high damage, and ultimately a cunning adc that thrives with kite more than chase, here AOE is potentially really scary for a duo lane, if she could get her splash on each of her opponents. She relies heavily on positioning feathers and has a powerful ultimate that makes it easy, but also become invulnerable during that so able to dodge high stake ultimates and turning the tide quickly.

Rakan is interesting, and I think is more threatening of this duo because he benefits more from having her than she does him, that being longer dashes, bonus feathers, and of course the dual backing. If I could only ban one of them he would be the guy. He is extremely mobile unlike his female counterpart and has a little bit of everything. From the looks of it so far hes going to make it very hard for you to kill anyone in battle, where he will hit with his heal and shield to block a good chunk of damage, while also having a "taunt" just running through you. The thing is, He can get around more with Xayah, making him even more annoying and mobile(reminds me of a certain champion everyone hates...) He has in-battle sustain, engage and disengage(but not both at the same time), but ultimately lacks any form of poke, his range on his heal skill shot is pathetic, making him a very poke/disengage susceptible, while probably being very strong on people with poor disengage skills. I do not know how he would fair against supports who also benefit with all-ins(Hi Leona!).

In conclusion, when together its just as the lore says, Rakan the distractor and Xayah just hopping on his back.

So heres my proposed ultimate counter lane.

Lucian and Braum.

Braum can screw up Xayahs feathers while also his stun is very easy to proc with Lucian's double shot, and theres very little Rakan can do about it besides desperately trying to heal and shield Xayah. Lucian is mobile enough to dodge Rakan's knock-up, and also can dodge the return trip for Xayah's feather daggers if needed. Plus Braum Lucian are very strong skirmishers and work just as well together as Xayah and Rakan, just without the love bit, though I suspect a mutual understanding and respect for each other.

What do you think? Give me some thoughts!

First impressions (I have read the skills on surrender@20 but not watched the reveal stream):

Xayah's AA range is on the short side, so I would expect the standard weakness vs long range marksmen. She does look like she will have good potential wave clear with the passive and Q. W looks to be a good steroid (think Ashe Q) for both lane trading and teamfight positioning. E will have some general damage usage, but will be much more valuable if you can set up the root. I think a Q-AA-E combo should be able to set up a root.

Rakan will have the range advantage on melee supports but disadvantage vs ranged supports, if I read the numbers correctly. He has some poke/sustain, a knockup, and a get-out/shield (with extra range with Xayah). The effectiveness of the knockup will depend on how much delay there is for the enemy to dodge.

As a pair, they seem to have some pretty strong all-in potential with a passive shielded Rakan going into a Rakan knockup + Xayah snare CC combo allowing them to get full benefit from the shared Deadly Plumage steroid and Xayah's AoE damage.

To the specific proposed matchup:

Part of it will depend on how Feathers interact with Braum. If they don't appear at all, that will make for some serious annoyance if he gets some good E's off. If the drop in front of him, it will be annoying but will still leave you with the Feathers to play around if he tries to come in. Either way, it could shut down her AoE potential in a fight. The Braum shield shouldn't stop Feathers returning from behind him once she gets them on the ground.

I suspect Rakan will be able to land some knockups, especially when getting engaged on. Most CC has some wind up or warning time, but that doesn't make Lucian a free lane against other supports, so I'm sure he'll be catchable by these two. There's only so much dodging he can do. Since Braum is melee, that will give Rakan some range advantage, probably allowing him to hit Q's for the poke/sustain when Braum goes to trigger Relic Shield or trade.

Lucian is one of the few marksmen with shorter range than her making it possible for her to trade back whenever he goes for an auto and potentially hit him without reprisal.

Alternative proposal: Cait/Ashe/Ezreal + Sona/Zyra

Consistent poke from out of reprisal range to wear them down without allowing Xayah and Rakan to all-in effectively. Depnding on the range of Rakan's Q, he may not be able to get the hits he needs to sustain through the poke.

I think Taric would be a better option than Braum. He's very similar to Rakan, but trades birdman's mobility for tank. He has a ranged engage, plus armor bonusses (making Xayah's area damage less threatening), has a similar heal on demand, and his ultimate is a direct counter to high-commitment fights, which a short-range ADC like Xayah will need to have.

Ashe is probably the best ADC for the job, with her equally good kite, plus a range advantage.

I think Blitzcrank, Lee sin, or Skarner would be the ultimate troll for Rakan because while Xayah gets rekt by the Blitzcrank Q, Rakan goes to help only to be pushed away by Lee sin R or carried away by Skarner R. Basically, for Xayah use champions that can hook, and for Rakan use champs that use crowd control. Xayah be like, "Rakan help, I'm dying!" and Rakan be like," I'm coming!' and Skarner comes out of a bush with an R and goes like, "Lol nope."

Rakan has way too much going on. A lot of cc, heals, and dashes, all for running around in circles.

it's pretty easy to play against xayah. if you have a dash, then dash out when she has W activated, and/or dash in once it goes on cooldown. her W is her high point in lane. If you have high range, then bully her with it. be careful of her wave clear tho, that is her defense against you. try to make it too dangerous for her to clear the wave except under her tower. And when her feathers are down, dance righ next to the line where they'll fly to go to her, bait it and sidestep it with ease. Really the one you have to be careful of is her support - they will have CC or poke, and that is the real threat in the lane. if you get poked out, she can position aggressively because she will kill you if she is close enough to. and if they have cc, then if you get caught by it, you will likely lose the trade at the least.

(notice how most of this is true of all bot lane matchups)

With rakan, his Dash has a delay, so learn its distance and make sure to dance right on the edge of it, where you can sidestep it when he comes at you. if you can't position there, then make sure to move back and forth, so he has to predict where you Will be and then you can just turn around to sidestep it. don't cluster with your sup - so be carful going braum, if braum jumps to the AD it's vulnerable against Rakan. Also, rakan's poke-heal is a skillshot, dodging it helps keep the lane in your advantage. don't be tricked into focussing rakan - unless he's very out of position. he will just run away to his AD - note this could be used to your advantage if you position very well, but in most cases when he goes in either kite away from the fight or kite into the AD to focus the AD. you gotta make that call fast - this is kind of true of most bot lane match-ups, tbh, tho.

The difference really is thinking about their abilities and therefore their capabilities and vulnerable moments.

Most of Xayah's damage comes from her enemies not expecting it.

Anyone with mobility like Ezreal or Lucian will kick her ass easily. A champ like Kog that has to stand more still will die easily.

Just play Ashe and win through superior mechanics

I'm pretty sure this is the best joke I've seen all day.

Ashe "I only need one arrow."

Walks into lane like a total boss. Within a few minutes, alternates between accurate CS-ing, W zoning, and attacks on the enemy ADC when they farm.

The scrubs back off instead of trading back.

A few seconds in...

Ashe "United we're stronger."

W... Flash... a couple of autos... Heal...

DOUBLE KILL

So you're not joking?

I don't know. I mean I'm reading their abilities and watched a few demonstrations on youtube...

I've yet to play since the new patch but I doubt they would be that much of a threat. You think you need a specific lane to counter this?

I mean they are new champs but nothing really screams overpowered. I don't see why I can't just Ashe them and chill.

A Blitzcrank or a Nautilus is still far more dangerous than what Rakan has to offer.

I see two massive outliers playing Ashe into them, first of all Ashe is highly immobile, she has utility but doesn't always have access to any hard CC, being her ult. Mean that Rakan can very easily use his high mobility and devastating knock up on her at a semi reliable rate. Ashe relies a lot on her ult to win fights, her early damage is not all that high and Xayah's ultimate can easy dodge and counter Ashe's, meaning that Ashe in an equal match up will be pretty helpless against the duo, all I can recommend is asking for a poppy support or some heavy peel with some other high threatening ability to bait out Xayahs ult and stop Rakans mobility.

Honestly yeah. No one outshines Draven because Draven is Draven.

if youre mid yasuo is a good pick but make sure you counter your laner and not just the adc but for a support idk know if it works yet bc i havent tried it but braum sheild should stop the feathers from flying through so less root potential Yasuo Braum yas bc his windwall of course but beware they do not stop the feathers completely they just stop them where they are so you still have to be careful where you step
