Hey Riot, The Last Time a Summoner Spell Dictated Gameplay...
You made it an inherent feature of the game.
If you do some digging, you can find that WAY back in the first few weeks of Alpha, "Recall" as we know it now was tied to an item. This item was terrible for the game because it slowed everything down due to its extreme importance and high price, so Riot made it a summoner spell instead. Problem solved, right? Well, not really; the new summoner spell was so powerful that players always took it almost every match. It strangled summoner spell diversity dramatically because it had universal appeal and was never useless, and so Riot made it a permanent feature of the game.
It has been more than 6 years since those Alpha changes to Recall, and now summoner spells are lodged in the same bad position. One summoner spell stands out from the rest because it is useful in every situation and can be abused by every champion.
needs to go the way of Recall, becoming a permanent ability that all champions can access, that way more distinct summoners can do their job and actually diversify the way players affect the game. Right now, everyone loves flash, you can use it for engage, disengage, safety, ambush, you name it. In fact, most players would happily take flash twice if they were allowed to. It has no niche unlike the other summoners. Barrier helps you survive burst, ignite helps you secure kills, smite enables jungling, teleport sets up global playmaking, etc.
