@Riot: Minor buff for our favorite Stab-tabby?

Back in 5.4, Rengar's bonetooth necklace was turned from a trinket into a normal passive. In its most basic form, it is simply a gating mechanism. Right now though, it is too hard to meet the requirements for this gating to unlock.

Prior to his "rework", Bonetooth necklace was a stacking snowball item. if you got kills/assists, you got stacks, if you died, you lost stacks, just like Mejai's and SotO. that wasn't a very healthy item, so it was removed in favor of a trinket replacement (which has since been turned into a standard passive with the same effect). when it was changed, the stacks became permanent, but require more stacks to attain. This would be absolutely fine except that they also neutered the buffs it gave (no more AD, arpen, or CDR), so now it is purely utility buffs, most of which would otherwise already be a part of his kit.

Currently, in order to unlock the full potential of his passive, Rengar is required to participate in a minimum of 20 kills. That is a HUGE amount of kills, even if he has 100% kill participation. It is harder and harder to get that many kills the higher your skill level (because your opponents are also at a higher skill level), meaning Rengar is punished when playing against smart players, rather than being rewarded for being a smart player himself. His passive should take the majority of most matches in order to unlock since it offers a fair amount of power as the game goes on (similar to how Kha'zix passive unlocks with level, and Viktor's unlocks with upgrades making them both finish later in the game, Rengar's should be the same). Right now though, it is a rarity to ever get past half stacks in an average length game unless the enemy team is feeding.

I would ask for these changes to be considered:

  • Kills instead grant 2 stacks of bonetooth necklace, assists still grant 1 (ideally this would reinforce his role as an assassin)
  • Number of total stacks required readjusted to:
  • 3 for tier 1 bonus (from 3) (still requires more than one kill to get his roaming power)
  • 7 for tier 2 bonus (from 6) (with the improved stacks from kills, getting 6 stacks would be a little too quick, so increasing it slightly curbs the speed at which he unlocks his power)
  • 12 for tier 3 bonus (from 12) (used to take too long to achieve, but now with 2 stacks for kills, it is spot on)
  • 18 for tier 4 bonus (from 20) (this buff is arguably weaker than the 12 stack buff, yet took much longer, now it is more in line with the rest of his powercurve, and reduces the bare minimum required to unlock all of his passive's assets)

With these changes, getting to full stacks would usually only happen late game if at all, but that is a significant improvement over only getting around half stacks in most cases. These changes would put the ball back in Rengar's court to make solo plays and be a strategic, 1v1 pick assassin champion rather than just a team reliant schmuck trying to fit in team fights where he doesn't really belong.

If the current buffs that the bonetooth Necklace gives are too strong for them to reliably stack by the end of most matches, then nerf the bonuses, but in terms of gameplay feel, it is very depressing to only come out half stacked with 2 buffs than coming out fully stacked with all 4, and I would certainly trade slightly weaker buffs for more of a chance to actually attain them.

Thanks for reading, everyone!

I do think Rengar needs buffs, but I don't think he needs them on Bonetooth Necklace.

More, he needs help with early clears and ganks, and his ult CD is really long.

I agree he will probably need more love than this, I just know Riot is very hesitant to buff him because he has a tendency to either be really strong or rather weak. I thought this change would be a nice way to give him a bit of love without accidentally pushing him back into being OP.

It always irked me that they set the stack count so high, because it requires a ton of work for a very minor reward, except most of the reward is at the same time essential to his kit, which leaves the stacking feeling a little sour to me.
