New Item suggestion: Hearthfire Buckler

So I'm a little disappointed that Atma's is being removed, so I've thought about would could be added that could be a decent spiritual successor. Something that filled a similar niche, but didn't have the same issues Atma's suffered from.

So, Hearthfire Buckler:

item 1031 item 3067 item 1031 + 710G (3000G total)

Stats:

350 Health 70 Armor 20% CDR

Unique Passive - Spellblade: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals 10% max health bonus magic damage. 1.5 second cooldown.

It would be a slot efficient item that would provide stats that are not readily available in a single item. The spellblade effect would allow the healthy max health scaling, while not being as efficient for champs that stack AD or AP as Trinity force or Lich Bane. If someone did try to hybrid a non-tank type champ, they'd find their abilities much weaker due to having to sacrifice AP or AD to build health, and have little stats to scale their abilities. This isn't an issue for tanks, as they're used to less scaling on their abilities due to needing to build tank items.

A Pseudo-offense item for tanks that allows them to scale some measure of damage off their health, without falling into the paws of fighters, assassins, or ADCs.

Anything I missed, exploitable in some way I don't see, just sucks, what do you think?

  1. It has the Spellblade passive without building from Sheen? That's not how it works. Any named passive is built specifically from a certain base item.

  2. 10% of max health? That is significant burst damage. The fact that it scales on a tank stat makes it a bigger problem (hello, Nasus).

lets see, so lets use Shen for this example since his ki strike is going to be what sets this apart. My full build shen if I was using this item would have 5110 hp 300 armor (+4 per nearby enemy champ) 121 resist (+2 per nearby enemy champ) and 40% cdr

Ki strike adds 72 + 10% of his bonus hp the spellblade proc on this adds another 10% of his max health after using an abilty with a mere 1.5 sec CD

Shen with his Ki strike ready, uses his taunt and lands on the enemy carry. Auto's procc'ing both Ki strike and this for an absurd amount of damage. Shens taunt lasts exactly 1.5 seconds...allowing him to wait the full duration of the taunt, use his q or w to ready this again and gets another damage nuke for free... another 1.5 secs pass and he gets to land another one. Shen is built full tank so the enemy hasn't done nearly enough damage to him to justify him blowing up the enemy carry by himself. If he keeps auto'ing his CD on Ki strike goes down even further, meaning he gets to blow up another champion after his now 2.4 sec cd vorpal blades or 3 sec cd feints.

Shen is now broken and has become a full tank built assassin.

Dang, I forgot about Shen.

That probably wouldn't end well.

I see little reason to build this instead of Iceborne Gauntlet item 3025.

Sure, your item comes with hp and more cdr, but the passive on IBG is more useful. When I play a tank, I'm not looking for damage, I'm looking for disruption and crowd control, something the Gauntlet offers. Your Hearthfire Buckler (Really cool name, by the way), only offers raw damage with some hp. But then if I'm playing a Bruiser and want more damage, I'd probably rather build Trinity Force. Since I'm not stacking hp, Buckler's passive wouldn't be as useful as the 200% base attack damage.

Iceborne Gauntlet also comes with Ability Power, which helps a lot of tanks at least a little bit. And if I need 20% cdr, I'm probably just going to build Frozen Heart.

But let's try and make the Buckler work. Firstly, if it has Spellblade, it should build out of Sheen, which will give it Mana and Ability Power. Add a Kindlegem to the mix, and we're on our way to a more damaging version of Iceborne Gauntlet, but with more durability than Trinity Force. 1200+850=2050. Give it a little upgrade cost and bring the total cost to about 2300.

Add some stats. 350 Health (More than TriForce). Add 250 Mana. 30 Ability Power. 20% cdr. And UNIQUE Passive - Spellblade. After using ability, the next basic attack deals 75% base attack damage + 10% of bonus health as bonus damage.

Making it bonus health makes sure it doesn't get too out of hand, while still dealing good damage. If you have this item, a Randuins, and a Banshees, then you'll be dealing About 130 bonus damage+75% base attack damage, not counting whatever bonuses you have from runes, masteries, or your kit.

It becomes an attractive option for bruisers or assassins who need cdr, but don't benefit from the Mana or Crit that Triforce offers, or the slow that IBG offers. It offers some extra survivability with it's hp, more than triforce.

Are we forgetting Iceborn Gauntlet? Which is already slot efficient. A massively strong tank item.

This actually started out being a change suggestion to Sunfire Cape. The suggestion would have given it those stats, and that recipe with the Sunfire passive. With S5 and the removal of Ancent Golem, it looks like there will be no item in SR that has Health, Armor, and CDR on a single item. When I also saw Atma's was being removed, I shifted the idea to it's own item.

I really liked the idea of scaling some offense with a defensive stat, and thought the item would be a good alternative to Iceborn for AD tank builds that don't need mana, AP, or extra CC like Gnar, Sion, or Shyvana.

But as Phioxsyn pointed out, Shen would get to double dip on the proc, while still having a level of scaling off of the very thing you build to strengthen the proc.

Aw well, guess not.
