Why do (almost) All Champs Have the Same Base Crit Damage?

Recently there's been a lot of hate on item 3031 as an item and critical chance as a stat. But even now a lot of the ADCs who are the strongest in the meta are the ones who would care the least if item 3031 was removed. Corki , Graves , Ezreal and Vayne all wouldn't care at all if they didn't have crits as they all have strong alternate build paths. It would however leave a lot of champs who are somewhat less powerful than these champs like Ashe and Caitlyn in a horrible spot as they need their crit to deal any damage.

So a good question is why is Yasuo the only champ in the game with modified base crit damage? Surely I could drop Graves's crit damage to stop him insta-killing me in one combo because he landed a single critical attack in his combo. Or I could boost the crit on a champion like Fiora in order to make her to buy crit over just stacking AD. I think that a great addition (or even just a straight change) to Ashe's generally sub-par passive would be to give her a sort of Tristana passive except for crit damage rather than range.

I would start all ranged champs at 150% crit damage and all melee's at 200% and tier ADC's and certain assassins individually from this system as so.

  • 230% Fiora , MasterYi , Quinn (Valor), Tryndamere
  • 220% Gangplank , Shaco
  • 215% Ashe (Lv 18)
  • 200% Caitlyn , Jinx , KogMaw , Varus , Every unmentioned melee
  • 180% Draven , Kalista , Kennen , MissFortune , Tristana (after PBE changes), TwistedFate , Twitch , Yasuo
  • 170% Ashe (Lv0+2.5/Lv), Graves , Jayce (cannon), Quinn (Quinn), Sivir , Zed (If you've ever been crit by a Zed with IE you'll understand)
  • 160% Corki , Ezreal , Lucian , Urgot
  • 150% Every unmentioned ranged

Hell naw. Unconsistent statistics like these not only add balancing problems, but makes the whole game messy. Plus almost every auto attacker benefits the same from crit. Remember that crit applies to the AD portion of an auto attack, and excludes all bonus damage of sorts.

It's not really that simple though. If champ A has 250 AD, 1000 damage worth of burst and 50% crit with 200% amp and Champ B has 400 AD, 400 damage worth of burst and 250% amp and they attack champ C who has 1500 Hp without mitigation for simplicity.

Champ A scores a crit and instantly kills champ C Champ B scores a crit and deals 1400 damage

In this Scenario champ B is by all means stronger but crit actually has a higher synergy with champ A because it lets champ A nuke down a target more effectively.

ooook. and then? not always nuke matters. Take Jinx in account, she might not have much damage to add singularly to each of her attacks but can have more consistent damage and melt somebody with higher resistance.

This because crit is most of times indipendend from skill kit. Sure you can combine it together and obtain results, this is why there is champion diversity else won' t be fun right?

The thing that matters with this base stats is that they must be consistent and behave equally for everyone. How would be bad for a champion to be like "yeah, you auto attacks deal ad damage, but in your particular case you benefit only 80% for bonus ad on your auto attacks just because you are in category X"

EDIT: this means that there can be cases where statistics does not behave equally like other champs, but it must be because it' s the champion own power not because casistics

So...

Inconstant stats like base attack speed? That causes different champions to get WILDLY different benefits from the same stat.

This bring on a very particolar class of statistics, like health regen and mana regen as they are now. The latter were in need to be reformed and sure they benefit differently champion to champion ( skills not counting), but at least that is related to issues with a passive effect of the game rather a more active and imposing one like crit.

AS is a notable case: while adding % attack speed, each champion benefits equally the same in terms of pure dps without counting skills. Like AD and crit, stat sinergy really changes depending on kit, but with base stats it still works the same. A bit swingy, i agree, but keeps his terms.

Crit affinity % would be really a problem because already in the attack department we have attack speed ( that is a multiplier) with ad and crit chance, having variegated crit efficency will only add mess in an unclear way.

( on the other hand, i would really like to have all champions to have classified attack speed like with mana regen and health regen. so much less mess...)

this... is a messy reply. sorry, i can' t really put it in good terms because i think you are partially right, but there is just a thing that makes me think other % increase to be adeguate instead of crit efficency. I hope i was clear enough.

EDIT: ok, i guess i figured out what i feel pratically, if you get AD you have an addiction. If you get as you get a multiplier. Both cases have dinstict functions and are quite easy to relate. Crit chance has two multiplier components that stacks each other, the first beign the chance and the second the extra damage. Usually when considering the damage apported by crit you pick crit chance and conside rit as a multiplyer, for semplicity reason since with X% crit chance you get statistically X% dps increase. If you add that every champion has his crit affinity then you have a situation where you have a multiplier of a multiplier, one dependant to each other. Now, even if slow attacking champs get attack speed % they still benefit the same dps increase as a fast attacker, but also if they biult up AD they even have a better synergy ( AD casters for example rely mostly on AD, because as does not interact with skills). If you consider crit chance with crit affinity the results may vary a lot depending the champion you have picked, and the resulting dps will instead vary by a lot! FOLLOwing OP example no carry with 150% crit affinity will ever pick crit, because it' s a stat closed on itself! ( by the way, i hate the crit multiplier on IE and i hope it will soon be deleted/restricted in some way) i was clearer?

Crits are double damage in video games.

This is just how they work.

Lets make crit more complicated because I want it complicated and have no logical reason to want it so.

Hell no.
