Here's a post where you can ask questions about the stuff I've worked on, and I'll try to answer.

1/10 Closing Edit

Since it's been a few days and I feel like a lot of the questions I can be useful in answering have been asked, I'm going to stop checking in on the thread here. To those that I didn't manage to answer questions for, I do apologize. If there's something I missed that you really think I'm the right person to answer, feel free to make a Boards post @me, pm on Reddit, or even Twitter if it's a short question.

Thanks to everyone that came and asked stuff. The amount of traction the thread got was really surprising to me, and it made it really easy to burn through a lot of questions pretty efficiently, so I might try to do others like it a bit more often. Since most of the stuff I'm working on at the moment is WIP and under wraps, I likely won't be a big voice on Boards for awhile, but again, do feel free to reach out.

Cheers, Repertoir

Hi everyone,

Today I have been reading a thread by HIMM Sandwich that basically comes down to how it feels like Riot sometimes ignores player sentiment/feedback, and then goes silent when asked for answers. I won't be the best source of insight on projects that I didn't work on, but feel free to use this post as a place where you can ask specifically about any of the projects I've worked on in the last year or two, and I'll do my best to give you honest, direct answers about why things were made the way they were, and how I/we feel about these projects currently. Keep in mind that if they're outside of issues I worked on, it's likely I won't be able to give meaningful answers, and also that I won't guarantee you'll like what I have to share on some topics.

Here's some of the stuff I'm likely to have insight into:

  • Past Projects:
  • Nidalee Champion Update
  • Ryze Champion Update
  • Ashe Champion Update
  • Juggernauts Champion Updates - Garen/Skarner
  • Marksmen Champion Updates - Quinn/Kog'Maw
  • Current Projects:
  • Taric Champion Update
  • Mages Champion Updates - ???/???

Feel free to ask about other stuff as well, but I will say I'm unlikely to be able to help on lots of other things. I should have time to give some answers the next few evenings.

Cheers, Repertoir

It seems a lot of champions you have worked on rely on "windows of power" and that shapes their gameplay pattern. I feel that this is a healthy pattern for design, because it gives dynamic play that competing players can play around without having to overcomplicate the kits and I would like to see that kept moving forward (as long as it doesn't get to feeling like too much of a "arcade minigame" feel).

Do you feel like that is a good way to continue moving forward on champion reworks and design, rather than champions that have a steady state of power from moment to moment (disregarding cd's and aa's which all champions share)?

PS thanks for the shoutout, I'm glad to know a Rioter listened and cared :)

Edit: Can this post be pinned? This is a pin-worthy post!! Edit 2: Thank you :) http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/gaqH4Jyv-thank-you-riot-repertoir

This might sound a bit mean, but why is Riot always so unwilling to revert changes completely? It seems that no matter the backlash changes will almost never be completely reverted even if the situation before the update was healthier (at least in the eyes of the community). Also, what was the original objective in removing stealth wards, like the single most important goal Riot hoped that the change would achieve? Thanks for doing this thread too, I'm glad something came of HIMM Sandwich's post as I was checking it over and over waiting for some red responses.

(This may get downvoted a lot but)

Doesn't taric have like what appears to be diamond armor? (Well it looks like diamonds...ITS A GEM!)

With diamonds being one of the most strongest things in the world.... I was thinking randomly one day. "What if because he uses diamonds, he's immune to true damage?" like Diamond armor passive "This unit takes no true damage" What happens is, it takes the true damage and Adds it to the regular damage that still gets reduced by armor.

and he would truly be the ONLY counter to many of the champions who now sport true damage in their kits... and it would only make sense on him because of who he is and

#REALLY give him a type of edge that people could perhaps always use ensuring that he'll never truly lose flavor.. "From coals to diamonds." ~Taric

And there's a lot of champions who deal True damage - http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/True_damage

I'm not trying to play favorites with Taric, I don't even play him, but it was just a thought one day and seeing this brought it back up from my subconscious.

it's just a thought, something to post. Make a conversation.. Get some of my daily salt <3

Oh Jeeze. Not again. Do you realize how hard it is to make Riot look bad with you around, Repertoir?

(keep up the good community relations.)

  • The Ryze update doesn't seem to have remedied the issue of him being too hard for anyone without extremely low ping and high mechanical skill to play. Are there any plans to further change him? Does the fact that he's a 450 IP champ and arguably a face of the game affect decisions made regarding him?
  • Karthus seems like he's an immobile mage, but it seems to me like he has distinct mechanical and strategic niches. Is he likely to pass through the mage update relatively unscathed?
  • I like playing Zyra, but find that her kit doesn't do a very good job at fulfilling her theme. That said, it seems pretty balanced, and reasonably healthy. Would you all agree that she's in a decent place, but that she doesn't do a good job implementing her fantasy? How does this state affect her chances of turning up in the Mages update?
  • Kog'Maw's changes, while undertuned, make him feel more distinctive, and give him a rather hilarious high moment. However, his animations really don't look great. I know that animation is one of the most time-consuming parts of making a champion or skin. How much do animation bandwidth concerns constrain design possibilities in these smaller reworks?
  • Garen's rework uses the same champion-icon thing as Tahm Kench does. Which team got this first?
  • Which of your reworks are you most happy with? Are there any results of your reworks being released into the wild you were particularly surprised by?

About that Warwick update...

Will Taric be viable top lane as well as support? I've found myself enjoying champions I can play in multiple roles (like support Sion).

2 hours no responses GG (edit: this was a joke guys)

But anyway, do you guys feel Quinn is too strong? I've loved playing her since her rework but some people seem to thing she's still OP?

Can we expect taric soon, soonTM, or still a ways off? Don't really expect this to get answered

What are some immobile mages you personally think need work (not necessarily ones you'll work on)

Is it possible that Riot involves the community a little bit in champion updates? For example Riot ask the community if they like the changes Riot are thinking about. Because how does a champion update help, if after it most players doesn´t have fun/like the champ anymore? This will be maybe a lot of work but it could help pretending the worst and after all Riot decides if they hear on the community or not.

Quinn ultimate feels weird for me (i don´t have her/ play her frequently; i don´t dislike her for it; it´s just somehow weird in my opinion). How did you come on the idea about this ultimate? Edit: I actual like the idea that you guys try to make every champ unique.

Is Rumble a part of mage update? I don't necessarily think he needs a rework nor some big overhaul, but he does currently feel kinda weak compared to the other ap champions, so I was wondering if anyone at Riot even remembers him lol.

Just please don't turn him into some weird duo-jungler thing.

  1. Do you regret making Ryze even more of a straight mana-building spambot?

  2. Can you give any insight as to how different new Taric is?

  3. Opinion on the current state of Kog and Quinn?

  4. Would you be willing to share information on the "minor changes" to Vel'koz in the immobile mage update?

  5. Who/what do you feel is the most unhealthy for the game right now?

Hey Repertoir, when do you expect to complete work on the cloning technology that will allow you to take over all of rito and turn League of Legends into a perfectly balanced masterpiece?

Twiggles1/8/2016, 12:32:01 AM9 votes

Not sure if you can answer this since it's about a current project, but what kinds of changes might we be able to expect with the Taric update? Even just general stuff would be great. Is he going to keep his aura tank identity, or is he going down a more straight up tank/juggernaut route? Are his abilities going to be heavily altered, or are a lot of elements from his kit going to stay?

And the thing on eveyone's minds about this update. Is he going to have a similarly calm and borderline flamboyant/feminine sounding voice-over, or is he no longer going to be truly truly truly outrageous?

Thanks for your time, and thanks for making this post even if you don't answer my questions. <3

Any insight into why Rengar is allowed to blow squishies up from true stealth, while Evelynn had to receive blanket nerfs? From % max hp + E magic damage burst + DFG, to the wet noodle, current % no base damage ult/ physical damage on-hit application E on a mage/assassin.

Yet DFG was removed, and Eve neither received buffs or reverts.

At least you saw Evelynn coming when she was on you. You could at least attempt an escape.

If you could give Irelia a Gameplay update, what would you make her kit into?

Idk if you are still taking questions, but I have one for you: what is the funniest bug that you have seen while developing stuff?

IAmNeverViable1/8/2016, 5:28:22 AM3 votes

I was wonder of what you think of blink escape/abilities in the game? I play other rmoba, Hero of the Storm, where they don't have blink escape until very late in the game and the most mobile heros have dash escape. Currently, i found some champion to be frustrating to play against like zed, shaco, ekko and even katarina.

How can you think that the current Rengar is embarrassing when you reworked Garen into the most anti-fun champion ever?

What can we expect from the Taric update? Specifically, I'm wondering how the new Taric will contribute to a team.

I vaguely recall reading another red post a while back (from Meddler I think, but I honestly can't find the post anymore) that mentioned Taric would be roughly the same as he is now, supporting his teammates with heals and such, but that felt so... boring isn't the correct term, but it just didn't feel very impactful. Like it's wasting his potential as a defensive support champion, as my hope for the Taric rework is one that would make him a very strong, defensive support so that role wasn't completely dominated by Thresh, Braum, and Leona (and the occasional Shen, Blitzcrank, and Nautilus).
