AD vs AP balance (IEM Katowice)

Watching the semifinals today and also previous group matches I've noticed a trend: they almost no longer pick a dedicated AP carry and the team that picks an AP mid lose most of the time. The matches outcome is also relative skill related, but still, it's AD champs all over the place with some hybrids or a little mix of jungle/mid AP champions purely for utility (e.g. Lulu, Gragas). While there are some AP champs that are strong and even somewhat oppressive in soloq (Lux as a primary example), the AD-AP balance seems screwed.

Its more about team composition than AD-AP balance. AP are fine.

That's my point. Pros tend to pick the best comps available, and currently it's "protect the adc(s)" comps because ad champs are so strong.

The difference is in soloQ ADCs are less likely to rush magic resist as their third item. If they happens AP carries are only useful for killing other AP carries and supports as a damage threat, so only utility APs are common.

I agree 100%. And I think that because AD picks are always necessary for taking objectives (turrets mostly), and AD MR items are easily accessible and are always built by pros when necessary, AP solo laners now have little to no reason to be picked if they don't have utility.
