So, in season 6 ranked queue solo players will be matched with&against 2-5-man premades

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/site/2016-season-update/ranked-improvements.html Riot calls it "dynamic groups".

Anyone else thinks it's a terrible idea?

TO CLARIFY: YES, PREMADES ARE GOING TO PLAY AGAINST PREMADES MOST OF THE TIME. EVERYONE GOT IT, THANK YOU. SOME PEOPLE JUST GOT TO THIS PHRASE AND UNDERSTOOD ONLY THAT AND DIDN'T GET THE PROBABILITY PART (~95%). THE MAIN CONCERN IS THE OTHER 5% OF GAMES WHERE SEVERE IMBALANCE IS GOING TO HAPPEN, AS WELL AS THE GAMES IN 3+1+1 vs 3+1+1 OR 4+1 vs 4+1 FORMAT. AND YES, IT IS NOT GOING TO BE 5% EXACTLY, BUT COMMON SENSE CAN TELL YOU THAT INSTEAD OF LONG WAITING TIME FOR PREMADES SOLO PLAYERS WILL BE USED TO FILL

Why it is a bad idea in my opinion:

Increased toxicity. Premades are usually in their own game, talking in skype or whatever other program they use and not giving a damn about other lanes (a valid point even for 2 people (for example, premade botlane)). In worst cases add the blame game and collective reports. There are already issues with duos (numerous threads over last years), and we are going to see even bigger premade groups now. Just look at what is happening in normal matches and you'll get the idea.

Balance issues. Communication and team synergy is insanely powerful in this game. A 5-man ranked team can win against 5 random people even if these random players are a whole tier higher ranked, just because of team coordination, from pick-ban phase to actual gameplay. As there is no premade mmr penalty anymore, it's going to be a problem.

Climbing the ladder. I'll put it as a separate point. It is said that premades will play vs premades in 95% games. It leaves us 5% chance of being matched against a 5-man group, which is almost as bad as 5 instalosses. And it is a 5% win rate drop. Almost everyone I see in solo queue has about 51% win rate which is absolutely normal and you climb slowly as your skill increases. If your win rate drops to 49%, you will fall slowly in ranks. And this time there is literally 0 chance for you to offset this by being WITH premade 5 teams (except if you make one). The "only constant in the game is you" argument is not valid in this case.

Social aspect. Newly introduced bonuses for playing in groups should encourage people to play together. However, there are those who can't do that for some reasons. And there are those who can. This means that the number of groups should increase compared to the number of duos in this season by the number of those motivated by bonuses, and playing solo will probably feel unrewarding or even punishing, since you don't get all those chests or whatever it is.

Trolling. 4-man premades /ff-ing when you are in your promo (because it's fun). Reporting the whole premade is not going to be effective and will probably be counted as report spamming.

Elo boosting. Never was as easy. Now it will be absolutely legal to pick a person and boost him on his own account. 4 masters/challengers will have no problems up to plat or even low diamond, being able to 4v5 enemy team (even if it is also a premade).

Now, what are possible solutions?

Make a dynamic group queue. 2-3 and 5-man(still don't see the point of 5s) groups are matched together. This way solo queue will be strictly solo and we'll have an intermediate mode with semi-organized teams. The downside of this is longer queue times (but premades are going to wait for other premades anyway, so not much longer?).

A checkbox to agree to be matched with premades. Imo, not going to happen, but why not? Technically it will be the same queue, but this time with an additional parameter.

Just leave things as they are (with or without duo q). Simple.

I hate the idea as well, I already dislike duo premades in my solo queue games, and now I might end up with 4 premades that gang up on me in chat.. not exactly my definition of fun. I like every other change in todays update that I could see and am really excited for the new champ select, but I dislike this idea heavily.

aGentleGrabnFist8 votes

All the people who like adding this to solo queue (I dont)... you realize this is going to dramatically increase queue times if they force 5's to play 5's and 4's to play 4's... which means they won't make 5's play 5's even if they say they are going to.

Face The Sun17 votes

while I do agree with your argument these changes will (in my opinion) encourage and increase team play even if it is a bit forced. What I DON'T like about this new premade system is its just making ranked look more like norms with increased stakes for winning and losing being the main difference. I really think that the limit should be 4 premade teammates and those who want to five man should play ranked teams where it is GUARANTEED that they will face another 5 man team.

Nagma52 votes

i rly dont get it , if you want to play as a team you can play 3v3 and 5v5 RANKS , they ARE MADE FOR THAT . SOLO q and DU0 q is for improving your individual skill , not being 5 in skype and getting free elo .. unfair system imo

TurquoiseYoshi12 votes

Note: Making a premade 5 will make you play against another premade 5 95% of the time. The other 5% are probably premade 4s.

WyldeFyres34 votes

Yeah, I'm sure that one random solo Q player who got matched with the premade 4 is gonna have a great time when the entire enemy team rotates for a coordinated gank, right? Or when his premade 4 starts losing and they all gang up and blame him because they're friends. Fun.

The downside to their idea is that 3-4 man trolls we get in normals are now going to be in ranked. Hopefully it will be less due to consequences to losing in ranked, but I feel sorry for the B5,S5,G5,P5 areas....

Hey there - This is some good feedback! It's informative and well constructed.

I play most of my games as a solo - I don't like the hassle of finding other people to play with and I don't like the idea of playing harder opponents and being EXPECTED to use skype to cover the gap. That's my personal opinion, and it's a very healthy source of debate for me as one of the primary Visual Designers on player behavior / social play teams.

However, that being said, I still agree with our mission:

Playing with other people is almost always a better experience for players. I can debate whether it's worth the time and effort or worth the penalties, but playing with buddies is many times less toxic and always more coordinated. It doesn't have to be playing with your best buddies - it could just be people you've elected to play with (like someone from the game you just won). Self selection is powerful, and it shapes how you feel about a game. We're removing systematic barriers that would otherwise stop players from playing in self selected groups.

I know I've played some duo games where there's another person with a great attitude and a killer jungle route that I'd love to have in another game, but I can't - I'm capped at Duo or I have to go for full-on premade 5. This extra person is a sort of "lone wolf" that doesn't play with other people, and under the current system, that possible connection or "fun game #2" will never happen - in fact it's systematically forbidden and even kinda taboo. It's almost "rude" to send out blind friend requests or blind invitations to people, which is the opposite of what we want.

Most of the time in a multiplayer game, your first experience with grouping is by joining a functioning group already in progress. In the current system, you cannot really utter the time-honored phrase, "Can I join your group?" in ranked. It's actually kinda silly when you think about it. I don't wanna oversell it, but this dynamic premade business is a serious SOCIAL step forward, and it's important that we monitor it and proceed carefully. Right now, I can't know how many duo's would have liked to add me to their group, so I just queue right up for another solo game.

I understand that it feels like there's going to be pressure to find and play with friends just to keep up or maintain, but I think the opposite will happen - I think as a solo, you'll be slightly more open to group experiences and "Hey man, wanna join our group?" stories. Those experiences are almost impossible now outside of IRL friends - You would need to have two "outgoing lone wolves" who both decide to group (and that's super rare.)

For the people who simply don't like to group (me), the new system is still beneficial: you'll feel more empowered to stand your ground and play what you set out to play.

Thank you for answering, Ryedan! I like how you are on the same boat as many of us and that you've explained your point of view.

Today I tried to summarize the discussion in a concise form and came up with this:

This new system indeed largely increases social interactions in the game, but also it opens path to both positive and negative experience as a result of such interactions. So this new queue can be totally fine if more attention is paid to improving the Report System efficiency (which was mentioned by Lyte), and Tribunal as well. This way all social tensions will be reduced, thus allowing to achieve the ultimate goal - increase positive experience and decrease negative experience as much as possible.

What about people who only care about BALANCED games? Indeed, I surely enjoy playing with my buddies, however due to the skill disparity those games are not competitive nor balanced. And yes, playing with buddies is more coordinated... which brings us to the question that how is it even remotely fair to randomly assemble teams with variable coordination and communication from the get-go and send them into the yoloQ?

Why all of the sudden you people want to turn Ranked into the imbalanced mess of Normal games where buddies of variable group sizes are creating havoc (skill disparity)?

{quoted}

But we don't need such a thing since we ALREADY have that ... it's called Normal games, or Ranked 5's. All you are doing is skewing the balance of the Ranked ladder by introducing more randomness and groups with various coordination/synergy/communication differences that will either make or break the whole team and screw the actual solo player over.

That sounds really bad.. I don't understand why would they do that, it's solo q, how the fuck it will still be solo q if you're playing with 4 of your friends, what the fuck ??!? I actually enjoy playing solo and this change really might make me quit the game.. I can adapt to item changes and buffing adcs which I hate, but this shit is gonna put me off ranked for sure and normals will become boring very soon.

So, I'm not one to criticize a company I respect, but I'm not certain I understand the direction they are trying to take the game. Many of us that play ranked solo Q will probably no longer play the game next season due to this change alone. I really do hope a rioter sees this and comments.

High511 votes

At face value, I agree, this doesn't make a lot of sense. The thing I love about LoL is not needing a clan to play and have fun.

It's like being able to pick up Halo, play some deathmatch and have fun without needing a clan to do so.

Onegarion11 votes

This will make me stick to ARAMs, Special game modes, and Normals. I'm sorry, but I'm not risking my rank to have to deal with anything more than a duo. Already I say there are 2 kinds of duos: THe ninja duo and the loud duo.

The loud duo is the one that instantly makes it known that they are duoing with X and typcially want bot or is calling their role as well. From personal experience this duo is the most likely to be toxic especially as a duo.

The ninja duo is the kind of duo I play as. We don't call ourselves as a duo. We might be adc/support mains, but we simply call our roles without making it obvious that we are duoing. Personally I refuse to play with people that must make it known that we are duoing and then call bot for us. I always back pedal on it and say I'll fill. This kind of duo I've seen tends to be less toxic or more likely that 1 of the players will be toxic.

None of this has any affect on the actual skill of the duo because thats irrelevant. Expand these situations out to multiple people and we start to hit big issues.

I hope this doesn't go through because I've already cut my time drastically between a new job and league just not having the same fun factor I felt when I started and this might just push me over to dropping the game almost completely (with the amount of $$$ i've dropped i'll probably never fully leave). Already hit the toxic wall that is Plat 5. Skills aside players are just more toxic for some reason and I've only played to have the ranking not decay on me. This will probably be my mentality moving forward with changes as pointless as these.

Quietscream19 votes

I don't want to ''give a try'' to something that is so important in my league of legends experience.

Nebuul18 votes

This is definitely not a good idea. The split between solo/duo and team ranked queues is great.

If Riot is looking for an alternative, then they should allow the following in ranked:

Solo/Duo Queue = what exists today Team Queue = 2,3,5-man pre-mades. That way, a duo who wants to be teamed with a 3-man team, and potentially face off against a 5-man pre-made, can do so. But at least you don't get into bully situations of 4-man vs solo. That is almost never going to be helpful in ranked. AT BEST the 4-man team will be communicating via voice chat and the last person will kind of be on their own. This is already a non-fun issue that crops up in normals, but at least there it doesn't affect standing.

Vera17 votes

This change is absolutely moronic.

Let us keep solo queue to, you know, play against other solo players. This will always be the most fair playing field.

I don't want to be turned into a fill-in-the-gap puzzle piece/odd person out just to enable 3 or 4-person pre-mades!

Bergk16 votes

My vote would be split the queues.

  • Solo-Queue (you must queue solo)

  • Dynamic Group [you must queue as a party or 2, 3, or 5 (obviously 4 wouldn't work because you'd require a solo player to fill)].

  • Ranked Teams (same as it is now)

Solo-queue and Dynamic-Group queue could even effect the same, shared ladder, but you just wouldn't get place as a solo-queue player against coordinated enemy teammate or trolled by grouped allies. Lets be honest, if a solo queue player gets grouped with a premade 4 the odds are that the premade are probably all in a third party chat program together (Skype, CV, TS, Vent, etc etc). Which means they're talking instead of pinging. They're shot calling, but as a solo player you don't hear them say "go in" or "lets gtfo we're too deep" so you get stuck looking like the idiot because now you got killed by that roaming mid laner that didn't get pinged because they called "mia" verbally, or you didn't follow and go in when everyone else, or you got caught out when everyone else pulled back.

tl;dr It is fine if Riot wants to allow us to play ranked with our friends, but also respect the solo-queue players that do not want to play with other people's friends.

FistOfSharkiesha15 votes

I can't stand premades they're extremely toxic, I think because of mob mentality. When you're with friends you don't care if the stranger is right or wrong, you side with your friends. The worst abuse I've ever faced was from premades and of course I end up getting reported 4 times when I didn't even do anything wrong.

Stonington14 votes

That's obviously a terrible idea. Prove this is in the works.

BlackxHokage14 votes

I like the idea mainly because I have a lot of friends who play league and I always feel bad when I have to choose just one to duo with but I feel like you should get a heft lp bonus for wins in a solo game for example

Win with 1 or more friends : 10-15 lp

Win in Solo que: 20-25 lp

This would still leave a reason for lone wolfs to grind it out in solitude while groups of friends can have fun playing together for longer . This also would raise the issue of I.e I have 80 lp I could just play a game alone and go for the gauge teed series or I cold play two more with my friends.this proposed system would be nice

Weathered13 votes

First of all, there have been many studies and polls saying that duo communication and other forms of speech communication WINS games, and would actually benefit you greatly. Also, if you feel its unfair, take this into account: nothing is unfair if everyone has equal opportunity to use it. The only reason you see duo's being toxic is because you only notice the toxic ones. Usually duo's just stay quiet and you don't even notice, of which they are usually there to win not troll.

Niaphim14 votes

I've had many, many games with premades this and previous seasons. Statistically speaking, it's the same ~50% win rate, but these games were the most stressful of all. There are silent, flaming, carrying, feeding premades, but more often than not they demand certain roles, and more often than not they are arrogant and disrespectful. The most "average" and "simple" games were without premades, those where I had most fun even in losing.

This is my opinion on this new idea for SOLO queue. It's called solo queue for a reason, and I feel like Rito is trying to combine Ranked 5v5s with normal SOLO queue. Idk about everyone else, but I like to play by myself and try to get better. I feel like relying on other people or playing with a team to rank up in SOLO queue could just be done in Ranked 5v5s. No need to really combine them and it makes the people who just want to grind up by themselves kinda at a disadvantage. SOLO QUEUE

If it ever happens once, it happened to often. Playing this game solo is bad enough when you have a duo on your team. Further complicating this by adding the possibility of having 4 like minded people who literally want nothing but to antagonize you seems like a hell I do not wish to partake in.

Riot has fcked up hard on this one m8.

This system should be implemented for team ranked and not SOLO queue.

ralsei9 votes

Let them try it out before we say anything. I mean hey, we all said bard sucks, but look at us now. Yes, synergy is better in groups, but I'm 90% sure they're system will detect reports that are made by premades. Let's test the waters with this one for awhile before jumping to anything and causing mass hysteria.

Onegarion12 votes

Yes bard did suck and on release he did. After some steady buffs he got better like most, but where is he now? Same story for Lucian. Terrible at first, got some buffs, got buffed even more than he should have and became too strong.

I just don't see the point in eliminating solo que and making it this way. Duos are one thing, but why add 3-5 man groups? 3 makes some sense because you still can't troll /ff the other 2, but 5 man is just ranked 5s, I mean come on why add this to SOLO que, and 4 mans are honestly the most toxic type of premades I've been with. It makes the game hell for the 1 guy who got stuck with them if things go bad or they are toxic in general. 3's? We have TT and ranked TT. I know its not the same, but we have it and there are always people there.

They have avenues to send these groups that doesn't involve ruining Solo Q and making it everything its not. I don't play Solo Q to see how good I am against 3+ premades who have communication, but to test my skill against others in the same situation as me. Maybe there is a duo, but even then they can only do so much. They aren't even 1/2 the teams strength so you still have to rely on the other 3 to perform adequately. I know this is how it is and while I have my theories and speculations to say why its bad. I sit on the fact of simply why? Whats the point in changing it like this?

Coccyx4209 votes

No. Simply no.

They are taking the idea from Blizzard about multiple queuing.

If you queue as 4, you get paired with 4 and 1 random, or a party of 3 and a party of 2.

If you queue as 5, same logic.

If you queue as 3, you get a party of 3 and 2 randoms.

Sammystorm13 votes

It blows to be the random with a premade of 4.

ESCAT9 votes

I agree with Niaphim.

Honestly, I would seriously advice riot to rethink this idea.

Solo = from the Italian: solo, meaning alone

League of legends is a team based game, True, BUT let's separate the waters here.

When a player goes solo ranked he will expect to play with random people against random people. I lost tones of ranked games because enemy teams had great duos, and my team and I got rekt, only because they had an advantage.

Now, not only we must be "afraid" of duos but even worst, a 5 premade, 5% is huge.

This goes with my theory, matchmaking system is manipulated and this will help A LOT. I notice some people climb faster then others, even if they don’t play so good, I started to believe it was luck but nop, there is something behind it.

I went from bronze 5 to 4, 3 times, continued to try and reached B3, but every time I get B3 bad teams start to come in... 8 times in row, so, to me, matchmaking system is preventing me to get bronze 2. I understand... They need to fill the ranks so this is a way, not everyone can be plat or gold, still, I don't care, I don't need the ranked system to tell me where I belong, I still play with my diamond / platinum friends, I just want to have a fair game, and have fun, if riot implements this it will ruin my fun with unfair matches, my fun, and everyone else's fun.

Riot please...

Solo Queue = One Player

_Duo Queue = Two Players (Why don’t you erase this? and create a party option, people go there at their own risk) _

**I Suggest: Party Queue = Solo / 2 premade / 3 premades / 4 premade / 5 premade **

Thank you for reading,

Sorry If I offended someone, wasn’t my intention at all, I’m only expressing my opinion,

Cheers!

For the highest elo players this is also an atrocious idea. I'll tell you why, it means we won't be seeing any new upcoming pros anytime soon, simply because they won't be at the top of the ladder. Why not you ask? Well when you have Team CLG, Team Solo mid and Team Liquid all premade in ranked, the top of "SoloQ" will simply be populated with already premade players and teams. Other upcoming pros won't even stand a chance even if they are better individual players, and it's already hard enough to beat DoubleLift duoing with aphromoo, now he'll had Berg mid too
