Lets Talk About Volibear

Volibear, everyone loves him but everyone that faces him hates him. Why? His passive should not be able to heal him for 50 HP per second every 2 minutes (in the early game). This leaves him an unstoppable killing machine (partnered with his abilities) at high levels unless you either burst him down or someone that does massive damage that is more than his regen.

He also shouldnt be able to heal like that in the middle of a fight. This adds a new focus of "Dont focus the Tank" to "Focus Volibear because he can kill you and still escape with full health" mentality inside of players.

Not only is he Super tanky but he deals a Massive amount of DPS. His frenzy increases his attack speed by 8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20 % passively and when it reaches full stacks then you can choose to bite an enemy champion for 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+15% of bonus health) which is really strong. Not only does it deal 15% of your bonus health, it also doesnt consume the stacks of fury so you can lose most of your health in a matter of seconds.

Not only is he Super tanky and Heals extremely fast and deals alot of damage but he simply out lives most ADC's in fights. Volibear's max lifesteal is the same as any ADC but even when he faces Udyr in a 1v1, Volibear can gain more life than Udyr even with his extra 55% lifesteal. Simply because his passive heals for so much so often.

You might be saying "Oh but it has a cooldown" but to that i say that it doesnt seem like much. If Volibear backs and gets all of his 3K Health back, that is atleast 30 seconds off the timer. Then when he runs back into the fight (depending on how close he is to nexus) it can take between 5 and 45 seconds. Then when he actually gets back into the fight and he gets down to the HP level that it activates (lets say about 30 seconds before the enemy team says "Hey he is back, lets focus him"), the cooldown is likely over.

2 minutes = 120 seconds

30 + 5 + 30 = 65 (Half the cooldown is gone) 30 + 45 + 30 = 105 (almost all of the cooldown is gone)

Although these are ROUGH estimations, i just thought i should bring them to people's attention considering nobody talks about how strong his passive can really be.

EDIT: I know grievous wounds would cut down on his healing. But unless you take summoner 14 (not likely if you are in top lane and take summoner 4 summoner 12) then you have no option (especially if you are AD)

summoner 14 item 3165

If you see an enemy fiddlesticks, volibear, mordekaiser, vlad, akali, or soraka, Aat least one instance of each of these should be somewhere on the field to deal with the healing. bonus points for morellos on an AOE mage vs raka.

And if you're not AP? What if you dont have Ignite either?

Provengreil1 votes

teamwork. Have an ignite by the end of champ select, have your mage build a Morello's. Heck, back when it was a thing, I built an executioner's calling on kayle after noticing their team was voli jungle, swain mid, akali top, and no one else was applying grievous wounds.

doiminat0r36001 votes

Yes. Lets let the Top laner struggle until the mid laner can gank for him against a most likely fed Volibear. Sounds like a plan.

Provengreil1 votes

pick sion and brick the lane. the toplaner can take ignite for one of his spells. do morgana top and laugh. Take nasus, bait out a rush, and hit him with wither and a jungler. vayne top, condemn to keep yourself safe.

or perhaps you could stop being the kind of loser the whole community bitches about time and again and learn how to not feed.

doiminat0r36001 votes

This is all good unless youre in blind pick. In Which case, its useless.

Also about the "perhaps you could stop being the kind of loser the whole community bitches about time and again and learn how to not feed," You should understand that this thread wasnt even about feeding him. Its about how easy it is for him to snowball and get ahead based off his pure tanky stats and damage. Not to mention his passive.

why are we using blind pick as a point?

you can play safe and use your tp for map presence getting early drags and such

Blind pick because you dont know what youre up against.

You cant play safe very well if you have a melee champion unless you dont want to get ahead.

i dont think blind pick should be used in any sort of balance discussion since normals are not really a competitive place. but if upu ever go against a volibear in top heres some things i would pick. Darius Swain Gnar Jayce Nasus Olaf Lissandra . there are plenty of champs that can lane against voli

if you're in blind pick you need to be prepared to get crapped on anyway. It's just 5 guys arguing over midlane for 40 seconds, then 3 of them hurriedly pick something else and then two troll the rest with a duo mid. I left it fast as I could and never looked back.

And frankly if you can't find any way at all to deal with someone who just barely beats Moderkaiser for mobility in this meta, your whole team comp is bad and you probably deserve the loss.

Also, first he was volibear, and I gave general ways to deal with that. Then he was volibear top and you weren't AP, nor were you smart enough to take ignite. I gave you ways to deal with THAT. then he was fed and inexplicably the midlaner's duty(Jungler AFK?), and I made a response to THAT. Now we're in blind pick? Do you get bulk rates on movers for your goalposts?

You do realize Volibear is primarily classified as a fighter, and secondarily a tank?

ADC are suppose to have a hard time against tanks and an even harder time against fighters, which is exactly the fusion that Volibear is.

Heaven forbid the combat system actually works properly.

Grevious wounds destroy Volibear, anyone that plays Volibear well knows how to account for the normal health regen, throw grevious wounds on him though, he's in huge trouble.

His only means of gap closing on an ADC is a 4 second MS speed boost, if he does not reach the ADC or APC in that time frame, which with proper peel, is not difficult to prevent, then he becomes nothing more than a meat shield.

Using your logic, Mundo is obnoxiously OP since he can do the same thing, but on top of that, gets a pretty big speed boost for the duration of his ultimately. But why isn't Mundo OP? Because he's an even bigger meat shield then Volibear. Volibear has quite a bit of health, but if he can't reach the carry, he's less effective HP wise then a Mundo is, and just as capable of contributing in damage as a Mundo: next to none.

Voli is well rounded for his classification except in the fact that he is the only one that has his kind of power. Even Mundo has less damage persecond than him. DrMundo isnt even THAT overpowered considering that you have to know when to activate your ultimate. With Volibear, its automatic.

He's really not well rounded, his glaring weakness is that its ridiculously easy to kite him with the proper peel, Vayne, Jinx, even Kog'Maw with the correct build and positioning for goodness sake can kite him effectively. I'm not gonna even mention Kalista since I think we can agree that bitch is a travesty.

Not only that, while yes he's based off of health for the most part, he's heavily AA focused, meaning armor such as thornmail and frozen hearts will be the death of him.

That's exactly the point I'm making, Mundo provides much less damage per second then he does, but he provides significantly higher sustain and hp in return. The point I'm making is that Mundo is not considered to be overbearing specifically because his damage is not great.

With proper peel and kiting, Volibear can be rendered to be put in a position that is worse than Mundo's, unable to reach the carry, or do damage, all while having less health and sustain.

I realize Volibear is classified as a fighter but I see most building full tank just because of that one health scaling bite.

His bite requires consistent AA before he can get it off. If he is capable of getting 3 AA off to perform that execute on your carry before you can peel him off or kill him, either he's stupidly fed, or the team is not properly peeling, or you got caught out in a 1v1, which, considering he has the kit for strong dueling, not at all surprising.

I mean I lose pretty much all my matches when there is a voli jungle and win when faced against a voli jungle . to me he is a better laning then jungling

doiminat0r36001 votes

laning is the main issue for Voli

I think supp voli is prolly his best spot because of his cc U have his run and flip and his roar

doiminat0r36001 votes

Yes but the overwelming damage still leads to kills. Lots of them. Your ADC will have a hard time having consistent kills if you do so much damage.

I see what your saying but it's not like jungle voli does loads of damage or for that matter like other supps like taric or leona

doiminat0r36001 votes

His natural kit does alot of damage. Even full tank Voli has the % HP bonus of his Fury. Its ridiculious.

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

summoner 14 =/= last hitting champions only

doiminat0r36001 votes

But it doesnt help if you deal no damage to him in the first place.

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

#Grievous Wounds.

When his passive pops, throw your summoner 14 on him to reduce most of his Hp regains. This is typically much the only rare chance to shut Volibear down, unless you're somewhat playing Bard top.....

doiminat0r36001 votes

And if you dont have Ignite? What if youre AD and in the top lane taking summoner 12 and summoner 4? What can you do then?

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

Play cautiously. If he gets too aggressive during laning phase, such as Q onto you & lands a few AA before the bite, best to cs under turret or throw something at a range, like Panth's Q. Another option is to get an early jungle gank from your jungler.

Don't get cocky, or in my language, stop being a show off. This typically calls for all types of bronze-alike, such as ignoring the poking-phase and cs in the spring, and gets himself free damage from his lane opponent before he goes to Boards and post shit like "Nerf Volibear!!".

If you're playing a pure tanky champion, or a 50/50 AD tank, grab item 3143 item 3075 . This build works pretty well against a Volibear, since he is an auto-attack base & Thornmail negates most of his W's %hp damage.
