Who do i main to be a one trick player? (One trick responses encouraged and welcomed!)

Hey guys,

I've peaked at plat 1 a few seasons ago, and now i'm pretty much a gold 5-platinum 4 player on a few accounts. I seem to have reached a point in my league life that the only reason im not climbing is that I'm bored. I pretty much hate the state of the game right now, but i'm going to stay loyal to it and figure out a way to get to diamond.

So I've pretty much tried everything... I played god tier meta champs, I've played champs I'm good at, I've played champs I just want to have fun with, I've been a 1 role only type of player. I've tried to one trick mutliple champs, and I've even tried just picking champs that go well with the current team comp my team picks. Always get bored or stuck in my climb.

After a lot of thinking, I've decided i want to be a one trick because i want to put all my effort into 1 champ and see how good i can become. Anyway, i've attempted multiple champs like Xayah, Jinx, Tahm Kench, and Vayne. Idk why I stopped with each, i guess a combination between boredom and flaws i find that i end up not wanting to deal with.

I made this post to ask for your help! your advice! anything you'd like to say to assist me on finally picking one champ and sticking with it til the end of the season. One tricks i encourage you to respond, anything y'all say will be helpful, thank you!

TLDR: Trying to be a one-trick player, can't figure out which champ to choose that i won't get bored with and that has a playstyle i enjoy. please comment advice or help, would be greatly appreciated! One-trick players especially welcome!

You could one trick as Kayle. She can do any lane, any role. No one ever bans Kayle. Kayle is always useful, she can slow, heal, nuke, shred armor/MR, can be ranged, and her ult makes anyone immune to damage.

Xayah ReMiiXeD6/20/2018, 5:05:40 PM16 votes

You don't like Xayah?! What?! lol.

My suggestion is to ignore all metas, teamcomps, playstyles, and just pick the absolute most fun champion to you. Everything will come in time if you put enough work into it. I do know that certain champs have not reached challenger or even diamond from one tricks using them, but I think the majority of champs can get you diamond if you practice enough. Best advice for you- Find the most fun champ in the game to you and everything else will fix itself.

Become a Teemo Teemo OTP.

Can go any lane. Can build any item. Fun and relaxing to play. Makes enemies ragequit.

All pros, no cons.

AurelionSol Great at roaming, lots of fun.

Or you can 1 trick and be a meta slave with Singed . Also loads of fun.

Ekko Ekko is the king of capitalizing on other peoples mistakes. Very interactive play style and high skill cap.

MonkeyKing Easy to pick up due to no skill shots, hard to play the higher you go though. He doesn't excel in any lane, but once you hit mid game he can become a monster.

Irelia Once they finish nerfing her, she'll be a great champ to master. Not overbearing with anyone taking her up, but great when played well (assuming they don't over nerf her).

Yasuo Despite how much the boards hate him, he's actually really fun. Can be a monster in the right hands, but can also be worthless if you don't have a feel for him (well worthless to your team, the opponent will love you though!)

Kayn Versatile, and snowballs hard. Pretty good mobility and a lot of potential.

Illaoi Not as popular at the moment, but she is a blast to play. Won't work in higher leagues, but if you're still in Gold try overextending at level 6 intentionally. When they come to gank 2v1 and spam taunt. Good stuff.

Camille Really strong, really fun, hard to master. Can be a game changer though in the right hands.

Jax May be hard to 1 trick with him being a common ban, but he's a great one to pick up as well.

If you would rather ADC, Lucian /Jhin are both doing alright at the moment. A 1 trick Lucian is very scary.

Personally, I 1 trick MonkeyKing . I love his clone and assassin play style with a touch of CC in the mix. I find it very easy to engage and make picks with him due to the invisibility, and his entire kit is really straight forward. Draw backs are high mana costs, passive doesn't do much for you until team fights, no sustain or shields of any sort in lane, and mediocre-poor wave clear until item 3077 (and some other drawbacks I'm missing). Great fun picking off carries though at any given moment. Everyone says he blows, which eh he isn't meta, but Harambe made rank 7 challenger with him so its doable.

I one trick Thresh cause even tho I have like 960k mastery on the guy I learn new things all the time, also you can really show your skill with him. Especially when have those games where ur hooks are on point and u single handed carry the entire team with picks. If you get a dumbass brick of an adc you can peel them, net them easy kills, and position them yourself. You have no idea how many times im like "my adc is about to die in this team fight if she stands there." I will lantern and physically move them to an good spot, I also like his design a lot lol. There are also so many ways to play him. Although i love thresh, I also one trick TahmKench with like 250k mastery and Braum with 200k. I feel like you should one trick but have time invested in at least 3 more champs just in case your guy is taken.

I would say just play whatever you like. Whatever champion appeals to you the most and you find fun.

When one tricking a champion you want to play someone you enjoy and consistently have fun with, both in thematic, and kit. I was going to one trick Brand at one point, but after a few games he just became stale and unfun, same thing with Ivern, but something about his bright and joyful nature didn't sit well with me, I'm not one for the bright and silly characters, I like more the characters with a deeper, darker, or sad backstory (Urgot, Pyke and Sol).

You also need to remember you have to be dedicated, even if the champion you one trick gets nerf or becomes not as good, you want to try to stick with them through thick and thin.

Urgot wasn't super on rework release, But I have liked him ever since I started playing, yes, I played old Urgot swell, didn't main him, but still enjoyed him, but either way, I still picked him up after the rework due to how much I enjoyed his theme and play style.

TDLR: Find something you like both in thematic and kit, and stick with them, you will get better with them with enough time, even if they aren't considered strong.

DirigoX6/20/2018, 8:31:10 PM3 votes

Ekko He has a very high skill ceiling and can be extremely rewarding if played right. He is unique and not extremely popular so youll rarely have to worry about someone else picking or banning him. He has extremely high outplay potential and can carry games if used correctly.

Khä Zïx6/20/2018, 6:51:59 PM3 votes

Play KhaZix. Only play KhaZix. Every lane, every position. Only play KhaZix.

Hey!! Love the topic and what you wrote =) I can relate.

But I am a one-trick since s4, and I enjoyed being a one-trick a lot! I've been around platinum 3 since s4. I had a 60% + winrate with my OTP, but I wouldn't climb because I had to play other role / champ sometimes, and I would be 40% or less with them...

I was OTP Warwick, with the old Warwick, on the EUW and then OCE server. I loved pre-rework Warwick. People would say he was boring to play, but not in my opinion. The fact that he was easy to play allowed me to focus on macro-game, from the jungle, and lead teams. In solo-queue, in plat 3, this was very efficient.

Then, Warwick rework happened... I stayed at 60% winrate in plat, but I had less fun. And since Warwick stupid nerf (I wanted a shift of his power from early to late, but they kept his early strong and over-nerfed his already weak late), Warwick is still strong in this short-game meta, but so horrible to play. I tried to OTP Trundle, but ... got bored quickly. I'm waiting for Riot to "balance" Warwick again. In the meantime, I plays some arams... or other games...

So, from this experience, I would say, if you can, find a champ: you enjoy to play (you like the art, the gameplay, the voice, etc... I like the lone wolf and the kit of Warwick - especially the old kit but new is decent) it doesn't matter if there's a high "skill mastery curve" or not, I think this is bullshit. even "simple" champs are hard to master, and macro is more important anyway. if possible, main a new champ that won't be reworked in a while... because otherwise you might get disappointed by the rework

I'm curious to see who you are going to chose =) I am thinking of trying Yorick or Aurelion Sol....

Dreadlocks6/20/2018, 5:21:49 PM2 votes

In season 4 when i started i played every champ.. Ranked was scary, and winning was largely a team effort and i did my best to encourage my team to see that. I liked playing amumu j4 full tank and also udyr. It was a great feeling hitting gold for the first time.. but i wasnt confident in ranked even though i had 65%+ winrate on these champs. Thats when i decided i needed to find a 1 trick champ.

I saw some 1 trick Rengar players and i was hooked. Admittedly it wasn't easy dedicating every single game to 1 champion at first. It was somewhat of a chore. But once i started to see the pay off, the little things you learn add up and i fell in love. Now i only really care to play Rengar.

I've always liked initiating fights. (amumu, j4, lee sin etc) And Rengar still allowed me to do that.. But not only could i do that, but i could do a shit load of damage. And to some degree, i could be durable in the right situations. He felt like the jack of all trades for me. The best part for me though, was he didn't fall off late game like my fav champ at the time lee sin.

You don't have to be a 1 trick to climb, the highest i've gotten is plat 2 80 some odd LP.. and you've already been close to there.

just pick the strongest champ right now and one trick him youll get diamond in no time

BlackDiamondJinx6/20/2018, 5:43:34 PM2 votes

pick the 3 most important things in league to you, find a champ who does them all and it should work out fine for you..

I like teamfights and getting "resets" off them- kat, yi, tristana, JINX, etc.. I also like sniping from far away its the most satisfying feeling- ezreal, ashe, JINX, etc.. and hate having a champ with no cc- jinx also fits this category.

I picked her and have been happy ever since.

EyesOfTheFox6/20/2018, 6:07:03 PM2 votes

I personally one trick MF. I love/hate playing bot lane, but I picked her because I love pirates and lady folk. And it was really the Bilgewater event from a few years ago that made me love her. She's a bully in lane and can be really strong when positioned well.

Honestly though, you just have to look at the champions and play what calls to you. I like being an aggressive lane bully so whenever I can't play MF, I mix in other characters that feel similar so I can still be a lane bully. Xayah for instance, while her kit does different things it is fundamentally similar. Both Q are for burst of semi single target damage. Both W have attack speed steroids. Both E have CC. Both R are cone shaped multi target dmg. So it feels similar to me.

Even though I have a positive win rate on MF, solo queue can be a mess and I'm too dumb to climb out of Bronze. #feelsbadman But I have fun because I like testing my limits with her and learning new things I can do and try, and since I know her well enough it's easier for me to know how something will play out before it happens. I have a duo friend and after games I tell him, hey man, when I say go in, go in, because I know I have the dmg and I wouldn't tell you to go if I didn't. It's also rare I get countered because I know how to play against all my counters~

Plus spamming her laugh tilts the enemy team so hard lol

[Note: I do play other things if I don't like the team comp or my support comp. Knowing when NOT to play your one trick can also be helpful in not getting tired of it.]

It's hard to truly accurately answer this question since I don't know what kind of playstyle you enjoy, but one champion I'd highly recommend is Yorick. He's a champion that is amazing in solo queue due to his insane split pushing and dueling power.

Unlike a lot of other champions however he is a champion that forces you to learn good macro to be successful, and a very different playstyle of kiting as a melee and zoning champions using his slow and wall to weave in and out of fights for Q procs There's a lot to learn with him and is incredibly rewarding when played well, I often reach upwards of 80k damage in games and am unparalleled in duels and even 2v1.

If you have any questions about Yorick feel free to add me on NA and I'd be happy to answer

General Theritt6/21/2018, 12:24:41 AM2 votes

Chogath. Note: I am not a cho'gath one trick. But the reason behind this is because cho is arguably the most useful and totally versatile while also being a team and solo operator.

Outside of nunu, cho also has one of the largest jungle execute abilities, being capable of doing 1000+ true damage to a creature, and if he's jungling, managing to deal easily 1700+ true damage to an objective in the jungle without blinking. How do you steal that? what champion outside of a heavy execute like Jhin can deal 1700+ true damage to an objective? Not many

Cho also provides heavy CC and light CC and one of the few silences left in the game. An AoE long range AP scaling knockup (not many tanks can just double down to build early MR unless they can scale their damage alongside it or somehow outsustain cho, which only vlad does). His passive allows him to sustain lane without even needing to buy doran items, though they just aid his ability to chunk. He has % max HP autos that slow with a small line behind his target. That, in early and lategame, is terrifying to see as it makes it harder to escape his Q+W+Ult combo.

Cho has some of the most versatile item buildings as well, providing good AP scalings, HP scalings if he wants to tank or fight a tank, scales his own HP to combine with other items, doesn't do horrifically with AD items, though he cant utilize crit very well. His lane counters tend to be juggernauts who he can outscale, and sometimes outsustain if you play passively, just defend the turret thanks to your AoE waveclear. You can no offense, mooch a kill or two off an ally while occasionally gobbling down minions, and also stacking ult on epic monsters since his ult also gives him stacks for that. If you fall behind, build solid tank. If ahead, build mild AP while building tank, or go full mage for damage/memes, while still defending himself thanks to ever mounting HP. He's a champ that can legit force opponent teamcomps to prepare for lategame fights, and drags a match out longer into your team's favor as long as you can at least trade even with the opponent.

Well, i main zed, and b4 downvotes come lemme explain. He has good dmg, good variation, and a very high skill ceiling. Practicing him will be worth it, as u practice combos and know what order to use ur abilities in. When mastered, he can perform some sick plays, that makes u flow with adrenaline. I recommend sticking to a hard champion that has good mobility. I one trick zed, but i also play Talon LeeSin Yasuo etc. gl, and i hope u have fun finding ur champion.

A fun champ to one trick is Diana, my friend has played nothing but her for almost a year and has had the time of his life.

Honestly, you have to decide what you want your two main roles to be, then decide whether you wanna be mobile or immobile. On my main, I am a Kindred one trick, as to because I like mobile champs with diverse role picks. (Although Riot shit on their chest with the passive rework but that's besides the point). I suggest deciding exactly what you want from a champion. I'd suggest Diana, Kindred, Viktor, Azir, Kled. They are all super fun champs with a high skill cap, and getting good with them will show your skill.

My suggestion is to play what you love the most and just keep it up. I have 1million and 300k with Ahri, but im not a one-trick. Its pretty boring to play 1 champion all over again (imo), and also, sometimes your champion is weak for the current meta. Id say that everyone should play Ahri, because she is fun but not to one-trick. If you like having fun and want to get out of -boredbecauseofthemeta- state, maybe Zoe? KaiSa? I think they are pretty fun and interesting.

Stupafly6/21/2018, 2:42:36 PM1 votes

Something you enjoy. If you are going to constantly play one champion, you better enjoy that champion

Vekkna6/21/2018, 3:04:06 PM1 votes

I would say Ezreal and Zyra.

Ezreal Has a lot of viable build options that shift power around his kit and have a noticeable difference in damage tempo.

Zyra I have 1-tricked her since season 5 (although that's changed this season since her plants are fucking trash), starting as support, then top, then mid, and now mid/bot. In the past, her appeal was that she had enough innate damage to spend a few slots on utility. In top I would rush Liandry's > Void and then build sightstone, zzrot, banner, locket, or some other utility.

In the current meta she's a surprisingly strong bot laner with the cooldown refund on W and the burst and structure damage you can put out with a Lich > DCap rush. When you're pushing a turret, each W charge procs lich, then you spawn the plants with Q (another lich), and each plant will tank an extra turret shot. An extra 3-5 turret shots during a tower push is a lot of extra time.

Ivern one tricks have an almost 60% win rate. Just go ivern, also he is almost never picked or banned even though he is a great champ cause he went from Ivern rhe edgey to Ivern the tree.

basically you have 2 paths you could go. you could do the "fill champ", like the first comment says take someone who can go anywhere and who you dont have to worry about being banned, or you could pick someone with really high skill potential who can solo carry if needs be. imo jungle and mid are the best two roles for that because of early game roaming and being able to snowball your allies, but if youre a great split pusher then top can also be good (basically it all just depends on your playstyle). i cant really say specifics just because i havent played in several months because i discovered overwatch then i discovered enderal then i rediscovered skyrim and afterwards ill probably rediscover a thousand other games filled with sweet sweet nostalgia.

MetalGearTeemo6/21/2018, 8:36:13 PM1 votes

I made this account originally as a teemo smurf, but now I use it as a Garen main for bootcamping positioning.

have a game where I'm never in the right spot on my main? run a few games as Garen. That'll get your head back in the game real fast.

Is this thread dead? Probably. I wanted to comment anyway lol.

I mainDiana because she is just a lot of fun to play as, and a pain in the ass to go against if you know what you’re doing. Her burst damage is really good, and once you get that first kill, you’ve popped off. She can be played top, mid, or jg. I really recommend trying her out
