Why do ppl hate support?

Ao Dracona··11 votes·11,407 views

In my time playing league of legends I have met a lot of players who whine and beg for other lanes when they get auto filled support, I myself am a support/jungle main and I've been playing support more than jg for the past few months. I discovered that playing support isn't as boring or bad as ppl depicted it to be. I play champs like Tahm,Ali,Shen,Pyke, and Nunu if he's even considered a support. I feel like if u played the right champions support can seem fun to a lot of ppl so I'm encouraging ppl to buy one of those champions I have listed above in case u get auto filled in support.

Still, why do ppl hate support? It's really fun

Most people want to solo carry the game with flashy plays and tons of kills, which is harder to do as a support. Supports also usually rely on others, which can suck if the others aren't that great. I used to play a lot of Leona, I basically dominated bot lane and made the enemy run in fear. You can totally carry as a support, but you do it in a different way.

xDelightify3 votes

The crucial word is can. As you mentioned you are heavyly tied to your teams performance as support. That can be good or often very negative, due to the skilldiffereneces the matchmaking allows (more a low elo. problem i guess).

They don't know how statisfying and rewarding it feels to hit a max range Thresh Q or get a 3-5 man Rakan R W. But muh oneshot Zed combo

LordGeovanni1 votes

Statsfying yes but more rare than muh zed one shot combo as zed can do that off cooldown behind or ahead and those support moments only matter if your allies decide to not stand around with their d**k in their hand and do nothing

floo1 votes

If you're not engaging with the support then you're part of the problem. Anyways, there's a different reward coming from successful supporting and carrying (in terms of damage and kills). I guess more people enjoy being able to carry by themselves bc they think others are those standing around doing nothing as you described. As support you make it possible for them to do so/do it easier.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Its not about using the support to engage but rather how often your engage will be followed up on by the team unless you gonna kill everything yourself as a support 1v5

floo1 votes

Again, some people don't need that 1v5 feeling. Yes, supports are dependent on others, but they also contribute to the game in their way, some carry more or less.

I dislike it for two reasons

1: Share exp 2: Near no gold or dmg

DoodMitHut4 votes

No gold? The Spellthief's line can easily get you 2500 gold, which is about 150 CS. If you get a lot of assists too, you usually reach fullbuild (with support items, that is - if you really want to go damage, you have a point, but you can have lots of fun and impact without dealing damage ^^) before most other players do. AND you don't even have to farm for that which is pretty boring IMO. AND if you play a support that can farm (like Brand Lux Velkoz Zilean Zyra Morgana), you really don't have to worry about gold problems.

Some people just don't find a supporting role fun, same as how people don't think some champs are fun. It really is just preference

I myself am a Sona OTP. Probably one of the most boring champs according to the playerbase, but I think she's so much fun! And I dont even build her AP!

Granted some people get way to upset when they're given support...

Kids don't like to not deal any damage and only focus on helping others. They want to be the center of attention. And then you have someone like me who likes playing support but is extremely annoyed with the sheer amount of terrible ADC players who just ruin the experience for you.

Supports bring the majority of the damage in lane, barring early game adc picks.

Most of the people that complain about support can barely carry a game even if by some miracle they're up 15/0. They can't make plays on their main and they sure as hell cant with the champions designed to make them.

  8. You are not a team player.
  9. Duo lanes are weird for you.
  10. You don't like getting ganked all the time.
  11. The stigma of bot lane feeding is too much pressure for you.
  12. You can't really adapt your playstyle to whatever your ADC needs from you.
  13. You've got no clue how level advantage works and try jumping into the enemy bot lane when they have a level on you and feed.

I was told to play support by the person who got me into league as he said "when you get behind, and you will, at least you can still be useful". Basically he just didn't want a new player messing up his games as much as I would have in other roles. It is easier to not feed when you aren't focusing on csing and have the poor judgment to now when to back off from doing so. I don't blame him, but this did send me into a state of only playing support for a long time(which wasn't that bad). Eventually I found thresh and decided he was the only fun one to play. As I learned about the champions and the game it started bothering I didn't really know what they were doing in their roles, just their abilities and combos. So have been trying to diversify my experience to other parts of the game. Oh boy had this changed my perspective and understanding of the other roles relative to what I know best. Early jungle is broken, good jungling sends ripples throughout the whole game. A well executed lead from jungling in the first 15-20 minutes while securing objectives is so strong. Mid lane is a pain in the ass unless you use an assassin. Top, I hate and don't understand as of yet... ADC is a fight to get every last cs and get your third item as soon as possible so you can start having fun. Overall point being with every other roles it seems that there is a big struggle for big rewards personally, whilst the best reward for a support is getting your teammates fed and their deaths low. You do well as a support and you yourself aren't really that much better off personally then you would be if you didn't try hard at all. Worst of all even if you carry your team it wont look like or show you are carrying your team. Doing well on support at best gets you personally a win, that's it. Even if your ADC is a brain dead clot of a player you spoon fed every kill to and lead around, they will get the honor cause they had the damage and the good looking stats. With support a player has to be selfless, and this is a game that in every other regard promotes selfishness to have fun. That and people don't like not being able to kill effectively... to the point lux, brand, morgana, and Zyra supports are a common thing.

While I'm currently on break, tbh I occasionally need a break from the role itself because of the lack of diversity in carry roles (save for the recent shakeup in bot lane where I was playing the game constantly and having the time of my life).

When it's support+marksman, the lane gets boring tbh. Not to mention several items are tailored toward supporting marksman rather than other classes so it can be difficult to roam effectively if I have a specific build focused on marksman.

Lastly, spotlight. Most of the time the carry is going to get the credit. Support is an impactful role but it gets tiring being the second banana in what should be a two-man show.

My biggest reason has always been my own ADC.

If you and him have different ideas on how the lane should be played, you're in for a bad time.

Then theres the occasional ADC that couldn't swallow his own food if you put it in his mouth...

Mistletainn2 votes

I don't play support because I like to snowball for getting kills. A support player will get extra utility if he gets kills/assists, whereas others get extra damage, or tankiness, and it's just funner for me when I either one-shot ppl as a carry or go on 1v3s as a tank and destroy the whole lot. Support is fun, just not my cup of tea - I'd rather go around do the killing.

Tbh. Im getting tired of braindead adc. Last time I played support, we got an early double kill. Instead of freezing to deny them and get freekills and ganks, he kept pushing the lane making me useless (+ taking all canon minions while I had targon). As a result, we kept getting ganked and lost the lane at the end. The adc was platinium so that give you a hint.

i like to play supports and my favorites are catchers and whatever karma is suppose to be (burst/ enchanter/ catcher)

Mainly because the second a support becomes good enough to be considered a whole champion, RIOT does overtime to make sure the nerf the support in question into oblivion.

Supports are always hold on a power level that is between 50% and 80% of any other Champion, and when they reach 80%, people start crying about Support Meta or that Supports are OP until RIOT puts us back in our place. How could we dare to act like anything else but a walking buff for the ADC...

ChaddyFantome3 votes

I'm a support player and tbh, Supports technically SHOULD be at less than 100% by virtue of being a low income role. if not then it diminishes the point of actual income focus lanes.

Supports should be balanced more around having to scale, similar to their botlane counterparts as well, else they just take over the game because they both share a lane and are too powerful at all phases of the game.

Supports should really only become comparable in power to other champs mid to late game imo.

IainG101 votes

You're playing Tahm and Shen after Rito decided that they need to not be a thing; you must REALLY hate yourself, even by Support Main standards... I personally stick to Shield-slinger Lux and Morgana, with a side of Thresh, Supportilus and Leona.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Support as a role is lots of fun to me.

But I can totally see why people wouldn't want it:

  1. You're stuck in lane with a partner, and if they screw up you get affected by it more than the other teammates will be.

  2. It's not the role, it's the way other players act. Enough of ADC players act entitled and will shove off blame onto the support when things go wrong. Lots of people don't like being the brunt of a teammate's worst tendencies. And it's worse for support than it is for solo laners.

I don’t like doing all the work for someone else to take the credit. Also I don’t like playing tanks and don’t like engaging.

But I’m a support main. For one reason and one support: AP Sona is fun as fuck and even if your ADC is a Down syndrome monkey, as long as you can finish 2 items and boots you can carry the damn game. It’s just getting to that point is very painful as I legitimately think Sona May have the worst early game in the entire game.

I don’t play any other supports because I don’t like them. I was a mid lane main but the current season just kinda sucks for my boy Veigar and my girl Annie.

Because riot keeps nerfing my champion pool to hell.

Profirix1 votes

There are a couple reasons, as a support main myself perhaps I can elaborate:

  1. Most people find support to be the least impactful role, at least in solo queue or at lower MMRs. This is exacerbated by the tendency to get behind in levels, gold, etc. if you are doing your job correctly and obviously this makes carrying your team almost impossible in most situations.

  2. Riot has focused on hitting supports the last season because they feel like they have too much impact during the laning phase, whether it be sustain for your other bottom laner or outright poke.

My solution has been to play things that aren't necessarily designed to be supports. Support Cho'Gath has actually worked wonders for me and I can often take off and dominate bottom lane because I become too tanky to deal with and can delete a single low-health member of the enemy team most of the time, plus I can peel really easily. Similarly Zyra works pretty well because even though she doesn't have good scalings, her plants bring a bit of damage that most people don't factor in.

LordGeovanni1 votes
  1. Support you have to play a poke mage
  2. Support tanks arent tanky top lane tanks arent tanky and support tanks only get 40% the stat value of a top lane tanks items tanks are balanced with the idea of having item 1413 cinderhulk enchantment into full tank.
  3. Your adc needs to have your back if you play any tanky support and most adcs want you to not engage so they can sit back and farm but if you cant engage when you see a good opportunity you might as well not be far up but then your adc cant farm if you arent buffering for them but they dont think about that.

I used to secondary support but it relies to heavily on not having a p*ssy team if you are on a tank or playing a mage bot and poking with your non existent cooldowns and high base and scaling damage.

chipndip11 votes

Negative stigma, mostly.

People think that the fun comes from killing people, and if you're a support you're not that important. Enchanter players get the worst of it.

So what people will do is that they'll troll pick in the role or they'll build something incredibly stupid because they don't realize that they're more important than they think they are, and that their itemization choices/champ choices have more of an impact on the game than they realize. If you ACTUALLY invest time into learning the role, it's much more gratifying.

i think people hate support because you rely too much on your other lanes going even at the very least, it is never fun being the support against a team that is very fed

Eleshakai1 votes

It's a social thing. In most Western cultures we're taught to want to be exceptional... to want to stand out. To want to shine.

Support is a role about making sure OTHERS stand out, which runs counter to what we're taught from a young age to want in most Western cultures.

For the same reason people hate playing against Singed- it's practically a different game.

You DON'T want to take the creeps. You DON'T want the kills. You DON'T want to be the one who finished the turret.

For lack of a better term, you pick Support because you DON'T want to be the main attention in the game. You want to help someone else into the spotlight- not take it yourself.

Dweeebles1 votes

I like support when I am duo-ing with the adc. Otherwise I don't like to have to rely on someone else to play well for me to have a good game, its too inconsistent. But generally the issues I have with the position are issues with gold income, experience, and I don't like the champs as much.

Errastas1 votes

Supports are the babysitters of the team and whichever adc has the better babysitter wins.

Traust1 votes

I'm a support main but I also hate playing support, because you always get flamed for everything.

You put wards down around bot lane/ enemy jungle and then a fight breaks out mid/top you rush over to help and then you get flamed for not already having wards up there, and your jungle gets killed because a 50/50 invade is decided by his target disappearing into a bush winning the trade.

You get a game where your adc is a legit chimp, and you get flamed when he greeds out for a single castor creep everyone and their mother knows that the lucian thresh combo is going to punish him for and he gets murdered. The rest of the team instantly gets pissed, and then the ? ping fiesta begins.

God, support makes me feel like an underappreciated housewife.
