Should runes be removed altogether?

would anyone be open to the idea that instead of trying to balance or add more runes, they should just be removed entirely? I’d kinda like to see how it would be like if all the champs only had to rely on their abilities, items, and summoner spells.

I know this would never happen, but I am curious if anyone has thought of this idea before.
